  1. It depends on the program. I had to take "Intro to Health Care" as a prereq and that covered medical terminology. My cousin is in nursing school now and she is required to take a medical terminology course. That being said, you can really pick up ...
  2. "Borrowing" one patient's med for another.

Meds are occasionally borrowed on my unit. For instance, if one patient needs Norvir and pharm has not sent it up yet, it can be taken from another patient's bin and replaced later. Everything is barcoded so as long as meds are being scanned as the...
  3. The Circumcision Discussion

I'm sure it's much the same now. Every guy I've asked about it has said that looking at another dude's 'junk' is grounds for a butt kicking!
  4. Are you asking how long it takes to work in L&D after you become an RN? I just passed the NCLEX last month and am able to apply to jobs in L&D. Some take new grads and some do not. I am in South Florida.
  5. If you just passed the NCLEX-RN....

Passed NCLEX at 75 questions. My Kaplan scores were in the high 60s to low 70s.
  6. The Circumcision Discussion

Actually when they are older, better pain management is available to them. An adult could be put under general and then on a post-op morphine pump. Can't do that with a baby. I am really against circumcision but I've come to realize you can't argue...
  7. Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Hey everyone! I found out today that I PASSED! I am officially an RN. It's kind of unreal! Thanks to everyone here who posted and good luck to you all!
  8. Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Took my exam today in less than an hour with 75 questions so I'm feeling pretty good! Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread!
  9. Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Does anyone have any tips or pneumonics for remembering insulin types? I can't remember which are slow or fast acting, or peak times!
  10. Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

No Pee, no K (do not give potassium without adequate urine output) Most common cause of SIADH is cancer, esp. lung cancer IV KCL should infuse no faster than 20 mEq/hr Valsalva maneuver is used for symptoms of SVT Ototoxic drugs: loop diuretics (Las...
  11. Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Random facts: KVO rate is 20ml/hr MAOIs: Nardil, Marplan, Parnate Of course, no tyramine because of hypertensive crisis, which is treated with Procardia. Aminoglycosides (gentamycin, etc.) affect 8th cranial nerve function (hearing) and are nephrotox...
  12. I am graduating with my ADN in May. Last month I spoke with a nurse recruiter that came to our campus. I asked her if her hospital took new grads directly into Labor and Delivery. She said they do, and they have a preceptorship program in place for i...
  13. Should I take medsurg II online?

I have taken all of my nursing lecture courses online and done well. You might want to find out what type of learning tools are available to you, though. We get the same powerpoints that the live students get, plus some notes. In MedSurg we also h...
  14. Anyone else about to graduate and...

I am about to start my preceptorship in L&D and I keep thinking "Aaah! I need to review my stuff before I start! They are going to ask me something and I'll have no idea and look like a total idiot!" But who has time to do that when we have 4 ...
  15. Looking for some feedback on careplan

I don't have a book open in front of me or anything, but off the top of my head you might want to consider something related to breathing like Impaired Gas Exchange. What you have so far sounds good to me. Make sure that your interventions are what ...
  16. BP Cuff

I bought mine at the same store I bought my uniforms at. I wouldn't think it would matter what type it is; the store as I was only had one kind and it works well for me to practice with.
  17. OB/Peds help!!!!!!!!

    Thank you so much, Daytonite!
  18. Uniforms- i get to wear coloured

I work as a Nurse Extern/CNA at a hospital and we wear khaki scrubs and the RNs are in Royal Blue and/or white. I still get asked numerous times a day "are you my nurse?" In clinicals we wear white polo shirts with our school logo and navy scrub pan...
  19. Sign if you just finished your first year!!!

Just finished my first year with an A! One more year to go!
  20. Final Semester Grades (post here)

I got an A in Nursing II (Med-Surg)!!! I also passed my clinicals and skills lab classes, but those are pass/fail. I am so excited!
  21. Hardest part of nursing school

The hardest part for me is just trying to find time to do all the things I need to get done outside of school. Cleaning, socializing, etc. I could be a lot more organized and a lot less lazy though.
  22. Veterns Hospital vs. Regular hospital

You don't have to apologize! I personally just want you to have a good idea what the VA is and is not. I have heard it is a great place to work with wonderful benefits. Good for you doing your research!
  23. Could you tell me about your sceduale?

My clinicals are Mon/Tues from 7:30am-2pm. They were the same in first semester. In third semester it's the same time but on Wed/Thurs. Your best bet would be to contact your school directly. Oh, as for lecture, at my school (for 2nd semester) the...
  24. Nursing School Hours?

I go to clinicals Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:30am-2pm. It was the same for first semester as well. I think semesters 3 and 4 we go the same time but on W/Th. I also have skills lab on Saturday from 9-11:30, but there are classes during the week ...
  25. I was going to ask the same. I had to get my BLS before I started the nursing program, and I had to renew it this year or else I wouldn't have been able to continue in clinicals.
