I just signed up for the LVN program at Pacific College in Costa Mesa. The class starts at the end of March. Are there any grads or current students from Pacific out there? I was just wondering what you thought of the program.

Puh-leez dont go to Pacific College, you will regret it like many others who went through the program.

For one, the school lets you loose out on the floor without showing you the clinical skills. They just give a handout and you're supposed to figure out everything on your own. I think for any student who is first learning about nursing concepts especially clinical skills, the teacher needs to demonstrate and give a visual on how a specific skill is done. This not only compromises your safety but the patients' as well.

They also keep changing the academic policies in the middle of your program. One time they said you can't retake your end of term test after failing it. You are automatically kicked out if you fail this one test, no matter if you have passed all your quizzes and clinical portion. No second chances. You lose your money that you paid for the term. No refunds whatsover. You could be out 3-6K dollars. Some students got kicked out, then later we found out, other students who also failed were actually allowed to continue into the 2nd term, and have them pay for the 2nd term, obviously. These very students later failed the 2nd term just like they did the first term and then they are let go. Also, they actually don't tell or show you your score on term test. You pretty much have to rely on what they say, if you pass or fail. Hmmm...to me, this sounds fishy. I mean, if they are not lying to you or hiding something from you, why wouldn't they show it to you? After all, you have the right to it, it is your test score.

They also schedule tests after clinicals, which is ridiculous. This means you need to go back to campus after being on the floor for 8 hrs (from 6:30 am to 3pm) to take the test. How can you take a test and pass, if you are physically, mentally, and emotionally drained by that time. This is because they have shortened some sections of the program to a few weeks. For example, the CNA portion used to be 9 weeks, they cut it down to 6 weeks. The General education used to be 9 weeks also, and now it's only 6 weeks. What they're doing is shortening the program cycle so they could open up more starting classes a few more times a year. They obviously want to make more money at the expense of the students themselves, whether they have sufficient time to learn the material or not, they don't care.

Now you tell me, is this a good school or what?

I actually know a lot of people who transferred to Concorde and said that they were glad they made the switch, and that they are learning a lot, both theories and clinical skills. Concorde is more expensive, but it sure is worth it. These same people said that going to Pacific College is a joke, an utter waste of time and money.

ok daveg....pacific college...hmm...put it this way, if i would have known it would be the way it is...i would've never gone. the stress they put on us was incredible. we also did a night shift clinical for 14 weeks at huntington beach 2-10pm...it was tough and then expect to take a test at 8am the next theory day following a hard day at clinical the night before...only reason was because thats the only clinical site that was available. everyone in my class is pretty fed up with all the crap and the inconsistency this school brought us. the amount of stress from school was so overwhelming, that when comprehensive test came (the test where even if you were passing the term and u took that one final last test which is the comprehensive test, and u failed just that ONE TEST you fail the whole term and have to start it over). its ridiculous because they are so shady about giving us our results.

the teachers are awesome, if youre lucky. pacific college is the #1 ranking lvn school in orange county with i believe a 90% pass rate, but the reason that is, is because they weaned every bit of our brain out. the program is so intense and so packed its just ridiculous to even consume the amount of information given to us and expect to know what to do at the clinical site. sure we're #1 but are you sure your ready for all this stress...then again you don't have to listen to me and find out for yourself for all i know things will probably be different this time around, but as the graduating class, out 15 students there is only 8 of us left. another class only 5 left. i just think thats expectations they have for us is absurd. inhumanely possible to get an A on a test when 4 chapters was lectured to u the night before.

but i dont want to be the bearer of bad news, our class was branded the "WORSE CLASS" because we were so opinionated about concerns. we spoke up and because they couldnt solve our problem most of the teachers hate us...yup..hate us...hate is a strong word but ill tell you, some of those teachers should not be teaching.

good luck, i think in any nursing school you go to theres bound to be some bullshit youll run into, just stick it through, i sure did i dont know how i did it, its just my passion to be a nurse. i dont care what happens, im there to learn and get everything i can get out of the sacrifice, money, and dedication ive given. im sure everything will turn out fine.oh and concorde is actually a worse school....more reasons than one. goodluck i hope you find the right one for u.

Wow. Sounds like some of you have had bad experiences at Pacific College. I am a current student there, and my experience has been nothing like yours. I have lucked out, I guess. I have had a first rate instructor and have been more than ready for clinical skills. I have never felt "turned loose" in a clinical situation. I think that Pacific College definately has some fantastic instructors-- and some real duds. The instructor sure sets the tone of your learning experience. Our instructor has worked above and beyond in helping us learn the material and be prepared. I don't want anyone to just teach me enough to pass a test. I want to learn the material so I can apply it, know it and recall it--and that is what my instructor does. Eva is one of the best instructors I have had (even throughout my college years.) Yes, our school and some of their practices (i.e. not letting you know your scores on the term exams, or even not letting you look at a regular exam to see what the questions were that you missed) has some problems, no doubt...no school is perfect. You tend to get out of school what you put into it. When I first started Pacific College I heard horror stories about other LVN programs at the other schools. I just wish that Pacific College would put faith in their students and instructors (quality instructors) and realize that knowing our scores and missed questions would be a learning experience for us. Hiring quality instructors might be a problem--but the school has to realize that the instructors will make or break their program. Spend the bucks and get good instructors. I would never tell anyone NOT to attend Pacific College, but talk to other students about the instructors. Get into a good class. As far as my experience there: I feel like a nurse. I can act/react with my nursing skills at the clinical site with confidence. Has it been easy? No. Is the school perfect? No. Will I be a great LVN? Yes!! Thanks to my instructors in class and clinical... they have been awesome. Our class of 15 are still intact...we are Ohana and we WILL all finish.

Logicalones must have gotten extremely lucky.

I attended Pacific college and had the WORST experience ever. This school was so money oriented that it was ridiculous. The administration treated the students as if they were dollar signs rather than nursing students. The few great teachers we had (only like 2-3 of them and they were AMAZING) ended up getting fired or having complications with the administration which I believe was provoked because these teachers were student advocates.

Classrooms were extremely cold or too hot at all times. The man in charge of the school was negative towards students and extremely rude as well stating in front of classes to a student "You'll never make it as a nurse..." or "I hope you're never my nurse" in a joking yet underlying serious tone.

The facility itself was breaking all around us. Bathrooms never had soap (which I thought was amusing for a NURSING school) and the bathrooms were always broken. We never saw where any of our money went because it surely didn't go to soap or bathroom repairs.

I believe this school is up for review.

i want to warn the entire world not to go to pacific college. they have incompetent teachers that do not care about their students. if you try to go to a higher up, then goodluck. i feel that the school intentionally make inconsistent rules so that the students can fail and repeat the term. ofcourse, they make more money that way.

how can you learn from your mistakes if you dont know your mistakes? before, you can not even review the test that you just took. they changed that rule now... but still, you can only view the answers to the questions from the test and learn from them if the majority of the class made the same mistake. if you got a test item wrong and no one else in the class made the same mistake, you would be left in the dark until you graduate! my teacher hates me asking questions because she doesn't even know the answers or atleast try to find out.

with the tuition fee that they ask at pacific college, you will get a lot more from enrolling at a different school.
