If so, what department, what was your starting pay, how was/is the orientation period, and how do you like the job in itself? Thanks! I look foward to working there when I graduate in 2010:)
Does anyone know any specifics about working at Florida Hospital as a new grad? Do you get paid extra working in a specialty unit such as ICU or ED? If you work holidays do you get paid double pay? Thanks!
Hi. No you don't get any extra supplement for working a specialty floor. And as far as holiday pay it is a small percentage over your base rate but not anything close to double pay.
I don't even know if they are hiring grad nurses in ICU level floors at this time. I believe they want new nurses to start PCU or something less acute.
Hi Preeps! Thank you for your response. I did get an offer and am just weighing my options because of the 13,500 contract they are asking GNs to sign. Do you think it's worth it? Do you like working for the FH system?
Wait, what do you mean the 13,500 contract they are asking Gns to sign? Do you mean you have to pay that amount back if you don't fulfill the contract? How long are you commited for?
I must admit I am not happy at Florida Hospital. My floor is basically a nightmare. I came there with such hopes and was happy that they seem to put so much emphasis on safety and treating patients right etc. I have not found this to be the case and I think most of my co-workers agree that the budget pretty much is the bottom line. It's all about the budget and scrimping on staff etc.
I hate to be negative to new nurses who are excited to begin their practice and to have finally landed a job in their field of choice. I wish you much luck and happiness. But I have not found it where I work.
But am anxious to hear about the contract as i didn't know they were requiring this. Good luck to you.
Thank you again for your response Preeps! :) If a GN doesn't stay the full two years then they are subjected to pay a prorated amount of $13,500, depending on how long you stay (i.e., if you stay 1 yr vs 2 yrs, the GN has to pay back half, so $6750 and so forth). I guess it has to do with the cost of training a GN, but I've heard other Critical Care GN programs have GNs sign a $2500 contract which they are subjected to pay if they don't fulfill the whole 2 years. I'm a bit skeptical as to why FH's contract is so steep compared to other hospital's in Florida and just wanted to get feedback from FH employees to see if it was a risk to take. As far as benefits go do you feel that they are competitive compared to other hospitals? I've heard that holiday pay comes out of the 20-21 annual Paid Days Off that are given to employees as well as hours to fulfill an 80 hr paycheck. Is this true? Thanks again for your input :)
Hi I'm not quite sure what you mean. Most nurses work 3 12's so it's 72 hours every pay check. Not sure about the holiday pay but it usually only ends up being around $20.00 or so extra if you work on a holiday from what I see on my check.
Yes, as far as benefits go I do believe Fl. Hospital is pretty competitive with say ORMC and other Orlando area hospitals. They do give a bonus in February usually too.
You know like any place it has it's good and bad but I am just disappointed with the way they state they have these high values and aspire to such great patient care when truly like I said before the budget is king.
Hi Navreet:
Did you end up getting the OR Internship at Florida Hospital? I just applied and got a second email with a prescreening questionnaire. Was wondering if this is what you were talking about? I guess it is good when you don't get rejected right away. What happened after the prescreen? I would love to hear about your experience. Message me here or send me an email at [email protected].
Hi Liser79,
I applied for the GN ORIP at Florida Hospital as well. I applied on Jan 6 had a short phone interview, filled out the personality test, completed my references and was called for and went in for an interview on Monday. I think the interview went well with HR, but Im not so confident about the interview within the department. I was interviewed by three nurses, and I must say I was a little bit nervous. I havent heard anything back yet and Im a little scared, as I interviewed for a position in the NICU back in December and was rejected like the very next day. So technically I guess no news yet is better than a quick rejection. Anyway, good luck to you. Who knows we could both get lucky and end up in the program together. Ill try to keep you updated.
Hi CRobin18,
That is awesome! Do you mind if we exchange email addresses because that is easier than doing it through here.
I would love to keep in touch with you regarding our progress. My email is [email protected]. Send me an email with your email address and I will let you know what's up. I have so many questions .... and I am so nervous because I want this so bad!!
Talk to you soon.
