Hi all, I am in nursing school and will graduate in 2016. I have two theft-related misdemeanors on my record. First a juvenile 3rd degree retail fraud (2003) and larceny under $200 (2008). Both convictions have been expunged but I still am required to report these to the board of nursing. I am terrified, absolutely terrified that all of my hard work and time spent to reach this point will be a waste of time. I have been trying to go to nursing school since 2007 but these pitfalls have set me back tremendously, as many of you have personally felt as well. So please, I am asking for any insight into the Michigan board of nursing regarding how lenient they are, especially for someone with not one, but TWO theft convictions. Theft is an awful thing to be convicted of and I feel deep remorse every day of my life for the sins I committed. But, I must move forward. I must work on writing a better future because my past will always be the past. As awful as it is, I pray the board will grant me licensure so I can finally show the world just how much I can give. Please help!

Have you contacted the BON?

I have two misdemeanor shoplifting convictions as well, and graduate in May. I've heard you're normally fine if they aren't violence related, and expunged. You just have to be honest, and if you have to appear before the BON, get a lawyer. Esme, when I contacted the BON, they said everything was case-by-case.
Thanks for your responses. Yes, I have contacted the BON several times, and like Kristen said, everything is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and they will only give an answer once you graduate and submit your application. So, basically no help there lol. Thus, why I am looking for input from others who have been through the process and what their outcome was.

I went threw this. First, in Michigan the license app now reads have you been convicted of misdemeanor with punishment of two years incarceration possible, your answer is no. Have you been convicted of drug related offenses. Your answer is no. So you can check no on these boxes. I had more convictions than you, none expunged and mi BoN didn't bat an eye. The only issue will be employment as facilities have different standards. I had to write a letter of explanation for my job, and I had to wait for a response but was fine.
