anyone at lpn program at Great Oaks?

U.S.A. Ohio

I was thinking about taking the LPN program at Great Oaks in Cincinnati. I work full-time now and would be taking part-time classes 4 nights a week. I was wanting some feedback on how good the program is and the intensity of it. I'm a little worried about putting too much on myself with working full time and having class 4 nights a week....

I just graduated from Laurel. I would not try and work because it can be very intense. I loved our instructors and they would do anything for anyone. I learned a lot. I took my boards this morning so lets keep our fingers crossed. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Michelle

Shannon,

Where are you bridging? Did you have any problems transferring? A lot of places won't accept the A&P from what I'm hearing. I plan on getting my RN as well and am checking all the options. At my age I just dread the wait.

If anyone lives within driving distance to Dayton, Sinclair has a terrific ADN program with a really high NCLEX pass rate. They also have an LPN-RN bridge program. Since I posted the above I've gone up there, applied, taken my placement test and have registered for classes. They don't require you to take A&P 1,2 & 3 over but have a physiology class to cover it. The way it was explained to me is that we get enough anatomy but not enough physiology so the class is to make up the deficit.

Their waiting list is now about 2.5 years long....for traditional entry...but not if you're an LPN.

You may want to talk to other students who have or is attending Sinclair. I have worked with Aides who are waiting for their name to come up on the waiting list. All their prerequ's are complete, and they are awaiting to take nursing classes. I have heard in some instances that student's earn two associate degrees while waiting r/t needing to be actively enrolled to continue on. Just a word of advice! Thank you and have a blessed day.

That would make sense. However, the difference is that you're talking about Aides and I'm talking about LPN's. LPN's don't have to wait on that list of people who pass the PAX-RN. LPN's don't have to take it.

Hi all!

Im new to the site. I work 3rd shift at Mount Carmel West as a Unit Coordinator in the ER. Im thinking about going PT and take the LPN course through Columbus Public Schools. Anyone have advice on that?

Hello & congrats on considering a nursing career. I also graduated from the Laurel Oaks PN (Wilmington) program Aug 10th. The instructors there are outstanding. I passed my NCLEX this past week. They are supportive & available if you need something. I attended UC where there you are just a face. I strongly prefer the Great Oaks program. Good Luck & let us know what you decide.

I would not recommend Sinclair.Even being an LPn you still had to wait until there were enough LPNs to take the roll transition course.I gave up on them because of the wait which if you are an LPN is 1 year.I started taking classes for my BSN instead.I finally found Rio Grande and started into their LPN to ASN program.7 nursing courses and 4 gen ed courses.I was in class 48 at great oaks and we were the last class that took A&P for college credit(through a university) Im almost done with my current program. If you dont mind driving I would say give them a try.

I have maintained a 3.5 average and still work full time and have time for family.Great oaks is planning on starting a program with Rio grande in 2007 or 2008.Check out their website. Its all online except for your clinicals and your test taking which you can take in your area with a preceptor

Thanks for the recommendation. I did check it out but just can't see making a 2 1/2 drive each way to school. I do know about the roll transition wait. However, I have enough courses to take that are non-nursing courses to keep me busy in the meantime. I can do these and work, plus they'll go toward my BSN if I plan to pursue that alley... That much driving time would be not only hard on my physical wellbeing but it would also cause me to miss that much more of my kids activities. Not to mention the cost of gas and the wear/tear on my car...

Insofar as an online program... I've checked into several of those. I'm not sure how well I would do in them. I'm a good student and have done well so far but am not sure I could do well with type of learning environment.

I'm glad it's working out for you and that you're so near finished. Have you found that employers work well with students in school insofar as scheduling flexibility?

Well as I stated before.Clinicals are 1 time per week nand you are not always going to have to make that drive.I a now driving to chilicothe which is much closer.I work PRN at 3 nursing homes and hospitals so I work when I choose.Y ou can do well in an oline program if you set up a shedule for studying.I was quite tired of having to go to lectures.I found that if I couldnt sleep then I could get up and do school work and project and post them at any time of the day or night. If my kids had a play I would finish class work a week in advance so i wouldnt have to worry about trying to scramble to do it later on.I loved it and still do.Just do what works for you.I just wanted a program I could afford and that didnt have a lot of BS classes and I found it.

I am looking at great oaks (scarlet) is the IV Therapy included in the LPN program are is it totally seperate. I am currently enrolled at galen but its just not working for me. I suggest never be a part of the first class.
