Anyone going through Excelsior... Help...

Published

If anyone can help me out here, I am confused about Excelsior College. I applied, and upon transcripts i will be enrolling. I purchased modules from The College Network, and they determined what classes I need by my transcripts. I need to know on the Excelsior theory portion is The nursing concepts and the Nursing Essentials for Health Saftey and etc. are the one in the same? or is the nursing concepts more classes that I will need. The college network determined that I needed: Health saftey, chronicity, reproductive health, Life span 1,2,3, Transition to RN as my classes i needed for credit. I have other credits from local colleges for the general classes. Can anyone help me understand.

Thanks, it will help me plan better financially and study time wise.

Don't worry about the phrase nursing concepts. That is what the exams were called before the fairly recent change. Don't apply to you. You will be taking the tests (very similar) under the new titles. Sorry you didn't read about The College Network on this site before you enrolled. Waste of money. TCN is not necessary to do Excelsior. They are only a publishing company and their study guides can be bought used for as low as $15 apiece on ebay. Otherwise, good luck as you start the program. Be sure to go to the Distance Learning forum and read up on the many threads about EC.

No, i didn't find out about the modules as a waste. I wish i did but i'll have to eat the 5,000. I am recently new to the allnurses site also, and I didn't know about Excelsior until the College Network. So... i have to suck it up. What books, or web sites do we study from for excelsior? do they have their own books we purchase?

-thanks

You can get a lot of your questions answered by spending some time on the EC website, http://www.excelsior.edu, exploring the nursing school section. There is a publications page, where you can download the nursing school catalog (you should do this because the catalog as of the date you enrolled is what your program will be based on), and the exam outlines for each of the exams you will be taking. Toward the front of the exam outline is the recommended study materials, books you will need for your nursing library anyway. You can buy them from the EC online bookstore, or from any other source (cheaper). To access the publications page at the EC nursing school area you must first create your personal account on the EC website. Anyway, you can get a feel for everything if you do a careful read of the website and the catalog. Assuming you are an LPN, you most likely are exempt from the second exam. You could have taken the first exam prior to enrolling in the program. But you must be enrolled to progress with the third exam. Other places you can find study materials: the files sections of various EC nursing groups on yahoo, ebay "Excelsior college" where you will find material offered by Lisa Arends, mystudygroup101, and others. When you get to the point of getting ready for the CPNE, the CD by Rob, http://www.robsCPNE.com, gets great reviews for helpfulness. You can find a ton of threads and posts that may be helpful in the distance learning forum.
