I wanted to find someone that is in the nursing program at JSCC. Would love to hear how you like the program. Is it hard to get into?
I have 3 pre req's to take. A&P 1 and 2 and Micro. Was wondering if they make you take all three before you can start taking any nursing classes?
Im hoping to start classes in Jan. Any info would be helpful for this mom of 3 that is going back to school after 13 years of being out of school ! :uhoh21:
I start my first class tomorrow No really I am excited, just a little nervous! I have been reading the fist 2 chapters and found out today from a friend whos taking the same class but on Saturdays that her class is starting on Chapter 5!:uhoh21: so looks like all that reading and studying I have been doing wont help me.
I just hope I get a cool teacher! Sounds like my friend got a great one.
Im just gonna take it one semester at a time. Yes it is very competitive to get into the program but if IU can make 3 A's in my bio class I need to take and do well on my compass reading test I shouldnt have a problem. Another reason for me to work hard an make A's
Good luck to yall and hope everyone has a good 2006 Spring semester!
RN program is very competitive at JSCC. Better make all A's and take as many pre-reqs as you can for points. Last semester they had 800 applicants and could only take 100. The point cut-off was 182 ( out of 200 possible) points...it keeps going up every semester. Good Luck to you...Just hang in there )
im interested in the nursing program at JSCC and i have a few questions if anyone could answer them for me, that would be great! thanks!when you graduate from the program, are you an RN? are there different programs there to get an RN degree? how long does it take?
Jeff State has a RN and LPN program. You can go to the school's website to see how each semester is broken down as there are differences in the RN and LPN program as well as if you go the part time route. After you graduate you take the state boards( NCLEX exam ) then you are officially an RN or LPN.
I realize that your post was a few years back, however, I went into the LPN program at Jeff State this fall. I was really having fun although the classes became really intense! Then came the dosage calculation test - if you don't pass it, you get kicked out of the program. You could only miss two on test to obtain a "90" and i happened to miss three! Yes, I was kicked out of the program after spending thousands on the vaccinations, drug test, background check, uniforms, equipment, books and tuition. I will enter the program again at another school next semester.
Very Important! . . . (Jeff State does not teach dosage calculation, you have to learn it on your own)

Thanks for posting ...Im now in my fourth semester of nursing school at Jeff State. I will graduate in May
Sorry to hear you had trouble. I wish you much success in the future!!
That's wonderful! I am so glad you got this far! I am getting along in age and never thought that I would ever get kicked out of anything!!! Never have. I had a 4.0 before the program, so this has hurt my gpa also. I will be going to Lawson State in the Spring. Hopefully, things will turn out better there. I knew going that Jeff State would be hard, and am wondering if all nursing programs are like Jeff State?
I am in the program at JSCC. I would not recommend this school to my worst enemy. This is not your average nursing school. They do not help you nor do they care if you pass. 40 out of 67 people failed the first semester because of an impossible math test. They give you an F on your clinical for a math test. You will fail almost every test. All my friends want to transfer from here. Its not that they teach you, its the strongest survive. It does not have to be this way. I have several friends that I compare notes with, they are amazed at what they are doing to us. Even my doctor friends and nurses cannot understand why they are teaching us medical theory instead of nursing. I recommend Shelton State, or Bevil State. No to Lawson and Jefferson State.
If you do not believe me come to the Shelby campus and ask any student in the nursing program.
I agree! There is absolutely no hands on training at Jeff State. After attending Lawson for one semester, I was finally able to pass that dreaded dosage calculation test, which by the way, was nothing compared to the one I took at Jeff State and failed. However, I still feel that we were "ragged out" at clinicals at Lawson because when we showed up, the nursing assistants were told that "they had the day off" and us nursing students did it all! I passed that first semester with "B's" but after that, I finally came to my senses and enrolled in the paralegal associates degree program at Wallace State. I had worked in the legal field for 15 years before enrolling in nursing school. I am very proud to say that even though I have not finished my paralegal degree, I was hired as a paralegal last week by one of the oldest law firms in Birmingham at 40K/yr with all benefits! No mandatory overtime, no 12 hour shifts.

Yes, this is true about St. V & JeffState (I talked to the woman at JeffState). I'm not sure when this starts. She said that it is more for working people because it is only part-time. The regular program is 5 semesters (2 years), but the St. V's parternship is (maybe?) 4 years. It's only on PM's & weekends, like you said.
