Anyone go to Jefferson State Community College?
I agree! There is absolutely no hands on training at Jeff State. After attending Lawson for one semester, I was finally able to pass that dreaded dosage calculation test, which by the way, was nothing compared to the one I took at Jeff State and failed. However, I still feel that we were "ragged out" at clinicals at Lawson because when we showed up, the nursing assistants were told that "they had the day off" and us nursing students did it all! I passed that first semester with "B's" but after that, I finally came to my senses and enrolled in the paralegal associates degree program at Wallace State. I had worked in the legal field for 15 years before enrolling in nursing school. I am very proud to say that even though I have not finished my paralegal degree, I was hired as a paralegal last week by one of the oldest law firms in Birmingham at 40K/yr with all benefits! No mandatory overtime, no 12 hour shifts.

I have decided that nursing is not for me
Gosh, thank you! I am getting ALOT of slack right now from everyone regarding my decision not to continue with nursing. I know that I put alot into it already, but that's just it . . ."I" have got this far, "I" struggled . . .not "the ones" that are on my case right now. I worked for a few years as a Unit Secretary while in school, and I swear I've seen everything! The good, the bad and the ugly! I feel that if they really want me to be a nurse, then they should go back to school and be a nurse themselves . . .they just don't understand what is involved. I will NOT be one of the ones who tries to make everyone else happy, while in the meantime is actually miserable! Anyway, thanks again!

I have decided that nursing is not for me
After much schooling and anticipation getting into two programs, I have decided that nursing is not for me. The stress of spending alot of money on uniforms, vaccinations, CPR classes, new books every semester, ATI/Teas testing, etc., has put forty pounds on my once petite body and at this point, I am really burnt-out and depressed. Nursing was NOT what I expected. Everyone tried so hard to glamorize this occupation, insuring that I would make millions and be able to travel too! When the actual truth is . . .this occupation is messy, scary and cruel, with alot of "fellow co-workers" ready to slit your throat at any minute. No one is happy doing this job, no matter what they tell you. Everyone ends up overweight and depressed, because they never get to stay home on holidays with their families . . .you NEVER get a holiday off working in a hospital! This was an extreme move on my part considering I have been a legal assistant most of my life. Nursing/Medical work seemed to have no regard for ethics and no respect for anyone. People cheated on exams in school and were lazy during clinicals - like my nurse-aunt told me . . ."you are on your own"! Good Luck!

Lawson State LPN Fall 2009
Well . . today was the orientation! Right off the bat, I left early to give myself plenty of time to get there, considering I live on the other side of town. Right when I was getting on the interstate, I noticed that traffic was backed up to the ramp. So, I got off at 1st ave. and wound my way through downtown and got back on the interstate downtown. Made it to the Bham campus at 8:57! A complete miracle!~ The orientation lasted until 2:00 p.m.! We went next door to be fitted for uniforms. The line was so long, I decided to leave and plan to go by myself to the uniform place later in the week. Even though I feel the semester will be intense - I got to meet my instructors and they seem really patient and willing to help. A BIG change from Jeff State. Yep! I think I will graduate from this school. Pretty good day after all

Advice to avoid "more CNA woes"?
I totally agree with you! About 20 years ago, I worked in a nursing home as an NA, but lasted only a month. I was given 25 patients to feed, bathe, etc. on my own with no help. The other NA's were nowhere to be found - I never saw any of them when I needed help with a patient. One of these NA's told the head nurse that "I did not wear underwear to work" which was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. I was fired for "not wearing underwear???!!!

Lawson State Hopefulls
Hi: I don't think it will let you check out until you have done all three backgrounds, which I believe are criminal, and then a sexual offender, and then something else, I can't remember now. But I think it will make you choose three different background area checks and then will direct you to the payment page. That's what I did anyway. Hope this helps.

You guys must live in Roebuck! (the mail!) I will also be renewing my CPR cert. at the class in Hoover on 9/5. TO: Keelee, regarding the dosage calculation test . . . do they give all three tests at the beginning of the semester or the end? Jeff State did not teach calculations, you had to learn it on your own.

Lawson State LPN Fall 2009
I thought I would start a thread for everyone that has been accepted at Lawson State for the LPN program. Hopefully, we can support each other and keep everyone up to date with this thread. The "first day of school" for the Bessemer Day Program will be an orientation at the Birmingham Campus on August 24th. See you there!
