I love LTC and have been a manager in LTC since 2002. My 1st job as a manager i stayed for 2 yrs and loved my residents and my staff. They knew I wanted the best for the patients and loved what I did therefore it rubbed off on them. In my new job(had to relocated due to my hubby's job), I am also a manager of a unorganized bigger unit and was for sure I was going to turn the unit around like i did the other. One problem::::I am expected to be the manager/MDS coordinator/CP coordinator etc. I am bogged down with MDS all day and dont ever get to see my patients nor my staff. THis is the part I loved about my old job was that i was with the resident's all day and could keep up with the unit daily.
A second problem,,,my DON states to write people up...well i do and i do not have the power to hire/fire/suspend but they do nothing about it when i do write them up. They wrote me an email stating they could not fire everyone!!! I never said to fire anyone,,,just have a plan for these repeat offenders ya know????
I am so frustrated w/ my administration and this disorganization and my administrator being into everything she is even into the schedule and never mind telling her that she is not a nurse!!!!!(because she thinks she is)! I am about to leave LTC where I know once i found such passion for it- is it possible for one place to bog you down so much that you feel like leaving what you once really loved????

Can't you find a place where your skills are appreciated. It sounds like you are a good manager but this place just does not allow you to manage.

I have heard this many times from supervisors. What they don't understand is the write up is the discipline. You would not punish your child twice for one offense would you. Neither should you discipline your employees twice for a single offense. The write up should be sone in away that is not only punitive in nature but also in a way that shows the correct way to do it and how to avoid breeches of policy in the future. There is really nothisn else to be done unless there is a progressive disciplary code and that should be thought of going in.Hang in there with your love of LTC. The national average of turn over for administrators used to be 14 months. It is probably less now. Hopefully you can outlast a bad administrator.X

I too am getting burned out. Not so much with staff problems; albeit there are those. I have lost 2 full time nurses in the last couple months with the miasma of diversion and missing narcs. I am pulling 2 shifts today, several during the next few weeks. I have been the MDS coordinator for the last 7 years, the DON too for the last 2. My Staff Developer, who handled the schedules and CNA's left couple months ago, so I am doing that too. I love this field, hope to stay in it in my NP capacity, but yes...it gets boggy. I, fortunately, have a very supportive Admin. But if CMS keeps adding more and more paperwork...I just don't know how we will survive the new survey guidelines. We give the best possible care we can, they just keep adding more. There are times I feel like Bilbo Baggins, butter spread over too much bread. Hang in there, breath and give it to God...mention that I need nurses will ya. I am hoping that some time soon I can add med techs to my staff; thus allowing my nurses to do assessments and documentation.

Absolutely. I used to LOVE the place where I work now. Now it is just a job.
It's amazing how one insane DON,or lame administrator, etc can ruin a place.
It's getting better now, but sometimes all you can do is leave and find some place with better management or more realistic expectations. I suppose you could talk to your boss to see if he/she can change your work load, etc. Might help / might not.
