I'm looking into the accelerated BSN Program at MU because I already have a bachelor's degree in another field. Does anyone have experience with MU's program? How many students do they accept? When is the best time to apply? Are there other Accelerated BSN programs that anyone could recommend?

I have heard and read that MU's accelerated program is fairly competitive and hard to get into but I don't know much more than that.

Hi, I'm trying to get more information as well, as I've applied for the upcoming summer semester.
But I've recently read a report (I can't remember if it was from 05' or 08'- sorry) that said that about 100 people usually apply, 80 are interviewed, and 40 are accepted. Surely the number of applicants have increased, but the odds aren't really that bad, considering.

Hi, I'm in Mizzou's current ABSN program. They told us about 150 people applied, half received interviews, and 40 spots were available. They are trying increase the class size but that likely won't happen for a few years since it will require adding faculty to keep our clinical groups at 10 students or less.
Wetzoo, did you receive an interview. I believe they start the inteview process over Thanksgiving break, at least that was the case last year. Good luck to you.

Thanks so much!
Yes, I actually had my interview a couple of weeks ago. I went in thinking that only 80 would be interviewed, but when I asked, they told me that they were interviewing over 100 people (due to the increase in applicants I'm guessing). It's not that much of a difference but it still worries me a bit.
Do you have anymore information regarding the program, as in just an overall view of how the program is like? How difficult or time consuming do you find the program? Thanks, again.

The interview is important mainly because you need a solid reason why you want to enter nursing that stands out besides the "I care about people" stereotype. I did not get in but was on the "alternate list" with who knows how many others as the department would not tell us as it was against policy. I do believe though that those who had successfully completed all pre nursing courses with A's or B's would naturally rank above those of us who didn't and any previous health care experience prior was a huge help to many I would say-I myself did not volunteer at the VA until Thanksgiving. Job experience such as at a hospital as a tech or a lab also probably would help I'm sure. Dr. Fuhrer is awesome if you want to volunteer as a TA or help in his lab. Ultimately at this point (post interview) having good grades and classes already completed is a huge help but many are wait listed each year and they encourage you to reapply next november if not selected for the competitive program. It is a very difficult program but I think the hospitals and health centers you do practicals in are great as are the people. I hope you get in! or reaply if you don't. I myself am short on loan funding and wanting to start a family soon and did not want to wait an indefinite time period to finish nursing so I am currently completing my lpn and will then bridge. Associates at columbia college is also a great route if you do not get into accelrated but hopefully you will. Good Luck!
please ignore "at this point" written in my response; I somewhere along the way forgot you said you still had interview ahead of you.
Yea i have heard that the interview is the most important! I really want to know what the program is like, because I have applied other places as well! So I am trying to see what will be the best option! did they tell you why you didnt get in? I know this girl told us she didnt get in because at the interview they said she didnt have enough personality .
ouch. I was never told why I did not make it past the interview. I simply recieved a letter in the mail stating their congradulations at applying and that I had not been chosen but to reapply the following year. Sorry I cannot be much help as I myself was not selected and thus cannot give you more information than I have already
Its okay. I appreciate the information you did tell me! You have been very helpful! Was the interview laid back? I had a friend who just had her interview and she said it was very laid back and they did not ask her any hard questions?
PROS:
The program is extremely diverse. My class had so many different personalities and I loved getting to interact with them.
Reputation. Having the Sinclair School of Nursing on your resume helps.
Great clinical instructors.
Great clinical sites.
I'm sure I'm missing more, but if you get the chance to attend, I'd say to definitely do so without hesitation.
CONS:
Honestly the only con I can think of how intense the program can be. The longest break you will get is 3-4 weeks of Christmas vacation, and believe me when I say to savor every moment of it. I was taking pre-reqs up until last May and started the program 2 weeks later. Like any accelerated program, it can be very draining emotionally, and physically.
I wish you luck on your interview! It's a fabulous program with a great reputation.
