  1. I work weekend nights. 3 in a row. Our census goes up and down and has been down lately so most weeks have been 2 nights with me getting called off my last shift. I sign up for as many call shifts as I can and if I end up getting called in earlier in the week then I just get called off from my scheduled shift later in the week because I'd be overtime. Because of the inconsistencies of my schedule and my refusal to use my vacation to make up for when I'm called off, I've picked up a second job. Now I work 3 days a week at the hospital plus 3 days a week as a school nurse. If I get too many weeks in a row where I'm working 6 days I do start to get burnt out, but it's better to have that guaranteed money than to "think" I have a job and only be working 2 (sometimes even 1) shifts a week. I do not have kids and I have a lot of student loans. This is why I work as much as possible.
  2. Wow, he's feeling pretty lively for being sick and having that much of a fever. Wonder what he's like when he's not feeling under the weather. Look Out! Good luck with that one.
  3. At my hospital we have to find someone to cover our shift and basically CANNOT call in during our orientation period. They made this clear to me so I gathered a bunch of fellow nurses contact info just in case I needed it. Other than that, you just have to call in at least 2 hours before shift start so staffing adjustments can be made. If its less than 2 hours, we're given an "attendance occurence." These even occur if you leave for your shift and get stuck in the snow, get in an accident, etc. Ya know, stuff happens to nurses too. We're not invincible. Hope your employer understands that and you get to feeling better soon.

Great Job Cosmicmama!! I hope your coworkers throw you a parade or name all their future children after you, lol. Seriously though, way to stick your neck out there and stand up for nurse's rights. I'm thrilled to hear your administration responded appropriately to end these unfair staffing practices and attempted to right their wrongs by giving at least some back pay. Way to Go!!!
  5. Nursing Student 2011 it is so unfortunate that your nurses didn't even allow you the opportunity to choose breastfeeding for your son. They returned him to you and announced they'd successfully given him his first bottle. Big Whoop. :yeah:You guys have predisposed this baby to obesity, lessened immunity, and lower grades in school, just to name a few. I'm sure your son is doing just fine, but there's a reason breastmilk is the perfect food for babies and it simply cannot be replicated. At my hospital breastfeeding is promoted above all else and mom's are asked about their preferred feeding plan long before the birth of their child so that they can go to the breastfeeding class and feel confident in their ability to feed once the baby comes. For our lady partsl deliveries, the baby usually breastfeeds w/n the first hour of life while still on L&D. If the baby is doing well, the nursery nurse will just pop over there and give the baby a look over and the full assessment and bath are completed when mom and baby move to PP. Our C/S babies usually comes straight to the nursery, accompanied by dad if they wish, for a full assessment and bath. By the time that is done, mom is likely coming along in recovery and we'll take baby over to mom in the recovery room to breastfeed. If supplementation is indicated at any time due to hypoglycemia, we ask the moms about their preferred method of supplementation. No baby is ever given a bottle or a pacifier without mom's consent.
  6. Not sure what you're trying to ask. Are you supposed to interprete the underlying cause of the abnormal VS? Be sure to memorize normal values for vitals and labs for each patient population you work with (Peds, OB, Geriatrics, etc). My clinical instructor loves to ask those types of questions during clinical and you have to know it off the top of your head. As far as this patient a low BP and high HR would indicate hypovolemia possibly due to fluid loss from hyperemesis, diarrhea, or hemorrhaging. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
  7. Hi, I'm in Mizzou's current ABSN program. They told us about 150 people applied, half received interviews, and 40 spots were available. They are trying increase the class size but that likely won't happen for a few years since it will require adding faculty to keep our clinical groups at 10 students or less. Wetzoo, did you receive an interview. I believe they start the inteview process over Thanksgiving break, at least that was the case last year. Good luck to you.
  8. I applied to my 1st choice in October, interviewed in December, and received my acceptance letter this week. If I had not gotten in I would have turned in my application for #2 by the end of this month. This is an accelerated program as well so I was limited in my options and none are offered yet in my home state. I moved and finished up my prerequisites at my school of choice and I feel that was very helpful in my gaining admission to the program. I became a familiar face in the building, I got to know the staff and advisors, and my professors sang words of praise about my performance in their classes. Already being a student there gave me a lot of confidence going into the interview and it showed them that I'd already made the transition from Working World to College Student and I was commited to their program. Yeah, I know it would have really sucked if I hadn't gotten in, but I never considered that to be an option.
  9. WantAccel.BSN congratulations on taking the plunge. It will be difficult for a short time but it will be so much more rewarding to know that you are on your way. I too found myself on the slow path of getting through my prerequisites 1 at a time with my previous job. I worked in community mental health (Have a B.S. in Psychology) and had a very flexible work schedule as a Children's Case Worker for the first year on the job. Then my hiring supervisor left and the Clinical Director hired "Hitler's sister." Needless to say my once flexible schedule went out the window. Another year of her constant badgering and belittling and I couldn't take it any longer. The last straw was getting flack from her after I used some of my earned vacation time this past summer after my parent's house and community was hit by a TORNADO! The whole reason I took that job was because it would be flexible with my schedule and my family life. So I resigned at the end of July, enrolled in my remaining prerequisites at the school of my desired program, and moved. I applied for my program of choice a year before I had thought I would and I had to work down to the wire to get my application in by the deadline of Oct 15th. I just received my acceptance letter this Monday. I start in my program on May 26th and 15 months from them I'll have a BSN. I tell myself that I could have spent YEARS getting more financially prepared and making sure that I have all my ducks in a row, but that could turn into spending the rest of my life "preparing" and not DOING. Good luck with your CNA course and prerequisites. I actually considered going the CNA route myself as a means to earn money while I was in school but the length of the course and cost didn't make sense for my situation. I'm sure your life will be a whirlwind for a little while with all of the changes but they are so worth it. Good luck to you.
  10. I have my first school interview coming up for an accelerated BSN program at the University of Missouri. I'm really nervous about and do not know what to expect. Gurmo- I have my interview with MUSSON this week for the ABSN program as well! I've talked to other students in NS, but I don't know any that are in the Accelerated program so I don't know what to expect but I'm sure their questions will be different. I know that they narrowed down the applicant pool by half for the interviews and have 40 spots to fill from there. So just being selected for interview is a good sign. Good luck!
