Anyone in Enterprise or Dothan area?

Published

Hello, I will soon be moving to the Enterprise area. My husband is active duty Army. I am appyling to the ADN at Wallace. Does anyone here know anything about the acceptance rate or just general info on the nursing program. It seems like a good one, but I am not for sure.

Amy

Congratulations! You're right about the staff at Wallace, they are for the most part very kind. I'm sure that you are going to do outstanding in the program!

Hi Military Spouse,

I am from Dothan. I grew up in Enterprise. Nice area. I am attending Chipola College in Marianna Florida. That is about 32 miles from Dothan. Wonderful School. I am in my last semester. Quite a few people from Wallace College are transferring to Chipola. We have an outstanding pass rate. Also, after your third semester, you may sit for your LPN/PN NCLEX exam. That is great. Make a little extra money!!! Just wanted to let you know that there are other options besides Wallace. We have quite a few Ft. Rucker people at our college. Any questions, let me know. Have a great day!!!!:chuckle

Sounds like they have revamped a lot of the program, huh? As far as clinicals, we certainly did our fair share. The first semester in the nursing program, we had one clinical that met once a week for 8 hours at a local hospital. The amount of clinicals increased gradually each semester. I believe in total I did 3 semester-long clinicals on a med-surg floor, one for pediatrics, one OB/GYN, 2 psych (one OP one IP), went to state mental hospital; for a day, went to Birmingham during peds for 3 days, 40 hrs ICU, 8hrs home health, 8 hrs hospice, 8 hrs supervisory, 75 hrs preceptor, 8 hrs ER, 8 hrs surgery, 8 hrs children's therapy, 8 hrs community health, 8hrs health fair. I believe that was it... whew! Maybe they will have dropped some of those hours.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE PAY IS IN DOTHAN. I'M THINKING OF RELOCATING THERE B/C OF FAMILY.

The pay rate depends on the type of nursing you do, and whether you are an RN or LPN. At the local hospitals, pay for LPNs to start is around $11/hr, mroe for experience. RNs is about $16/hr plus experience. Of course, you can find higher depending on your area of expertise!

I just moved to the Dothan area this March. I worked at Southeast Alabama Medical Center for two weeks. This included hospital orientation and three days orientation on the floor. Wonderful people at the hospital, but staffing was unbelieveable. The CHARGE NURSE the previous night had 10 PATIENTS!!!!!!! OMG!!! I called them and said I just couldn't work under those conditions. I am currently interviewing in Montgomery for a hospice company. The pay down here in acute care is atrocious, $17.50 base pay.

We moved down here from New Mexico because my mother lives in Dothan.

That is my hugest fear! I always want to live in an area where there is a back-up plan or two or three I love Dothan and the low cost-of-living, but there just aren't too many jobs out there. We also like the Ft. Worth area. Would you commute to Montgomery from Dothan or move that way? I believe there was a hospice co. in Dothan and a different one in Enterprise. If you don't mind, let us know what non-hospital jobs start at. You could have stayed in NM (moved to Las Cruces) and worked in El Paso and done really well. I think El Paso is an awesome area for nurses. Of course, where else but Dothan can you pay $130,000s for a house and have a $30 a month property tax bill. I can't believe the charge nurse had ten patients! Where I used to work, charge didn't take any patients. Our floor had 50 beds. That is sooooo horrible! But I still love Dothan!;)

I just wanted to give you all an update to all the wonderful ladies who gave me information on the area and school. I made it into the nursing program at Wallace and will start here next month. I am nervous and excited at the same time. I guess that would be normal though. Thanks again to you that gave me information on the area and school. We actually love this area. Its quiet, safe and good school for our children, so we may actually stay in this area after my husband retires in two years. We will see.

Thanks again

Congratratulations! That's awesome! Just remember that the 1st semester or so is probably a weeding out process and just play the game. We actually had a quiz on day 2 that asked who the president of the college was. Had a quiz and one question was "who won the square dancing championship?" Though about quitting during week 1. I think the teacher was odd and was playing mind games. Seemed to stop after the 1st week. Where did you end up moving? Did you buy? You should enjoy your time there!

Hey, I am glad you wrote me back. We did buy a house in Enterprise. This isnt our "dream" house by far but with one income right now with me in school this will do. Who knows we may move to the Dothan area once he retires and I finish school. So they do trick questions huh? I am new to this area so I have no idea about square dancing contest:uhoh21:

Hopefully they wont do that this time. I think I have Owens for Fund of Nursing and Whitlow for Health Assessment and York for Pharmacology. I am doing my clinicals this semester at Dale Medical Center in Ozark. I have no idea where that hospital even is. I guess I will have to drive over there and check it out soon.

Hi Amy,

Actually, I went to school in NC so it may be different at Wallace. There are many nice areas in Enterprise. I hope you enjoy your time there! I always think of the house we could own out there for the price of this one in PA. And the taxes:madface: Hang in there and if I can be of any help, just let me know! Oh, go to Larry's Barbeque and have a baked potato with chicken or the salad with chicken (it has pickles on it--odd, but good!) I MISS Larry's Bque!

Hello again, yeah we have hit several BBQ resturants. They are all delish! And I love that everywhere I go they have Sweet Tea.. My favorite.. Yeah they are building new homes everywhere here. You and your hubby should think abou moving back. George Jones is supposedly moving down here and some more country stars are supposed to be opening up stuff. We will see what happens. I like Dothan though. I like that there is more to shop and do there. Which hospital did you work at here? I have heard that Flowers is more family oriented and a more friendly working enviroment.

Hi Amy,

Actually, I didn't work at the hospitals there. Hubby was rotating between shifts and it was just impossible. I interviewed and was offered a position at SAMC, but couldn't make it work. I ended up working at the Vein & Laser clinic (Dr. Todd) doing laser hair removal and I worked at Ramsay Youth Services (adolescent psych). I believe Ramsay changed their name, but they are on Cottonwood Rd. That was a pretty good job. I believe I only made $14 per hour and they offered me $15 to go full-time. Scary! When we left there we moved to El Paso, TX and within months I was making $25/hour while working day shift. I really like the area around Shell Field in Enterprise. All those nice, new one-story houses. Sometimes I am suprised at how prices have gone up in Enterprise! When we had our house in Dothan, we paid about $30 a month in property taxes! Here, we pay about $2600/yr plus we pay 3.07% state income tax and another 1% local income tax. Of course, I am making $27.50 an hour which I probably couldn't do in Dothan. It still holds great appeal! If we don't end up in that area, we will probably go to DFW area. We came within weeks of moving there, but hubby got a better job offer here right before he retired.
