Hi everyone,
I'm looking at going back to school for my nursing degree. I have a BA from Hofstra University, so I've been told that a lot of my general credits will transfer.
I'm 35 with a mortgage and other responsibilities, so it's not feasible for me to quit my job and go to school full-time. My initial plan of action was to take care of my science pre-reqs at maybe Nassau or another community college and then apply to Nursing schools, but I saw that BMCC has a part-time evening/weekend program.
I also just read the post that the red tape there can be a horror to deal with.
So just wondering if it's worth to even try getting into that program (40 students seems like ultra competitive to me!) or just do my pre-reqs somewhere else.
It seems like if I did get accepted into the BMCC part-time program, I would be able to get my Associates Degree in Nursing and then hopefully get a job at a hospital that might help pay for me to get my BSN.
UGH!!! This going back to school is driving me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!

i am currently enrolled in bmcc's evening program. The material is not hard to learn, however there is a lot, and i mean so much that sometimes you don't have the time to do all your reading/assignments. The course is great though, but in order to succeed you have to work very hard and forget about your social life. The average gpa for this semester was 3.83 to get in, this is rated on four courses: A&P 1, Math for medical dosage, ENG 101 and PSY 101. The good thing is that bmcc offers a lot of evening and weekend classes.
let me know if you need any more info

Hello CMSNYC,
I too attend the evening/weekend program at BMCC and am in my last semester.
I have worked full-time throughout all of my nursing education and although it is exhausting and time consuming, it is not impossible. It's all about managing your time and making sacrifices to make sure your studies are top priority.
The program can be challenging and the material very extensive, however, if you make sacrifices with your social life, free time, and some homemaking time you will be fine. Make sure that you set aside a few hours for yourself in order to keep yourself sane.
It is impossible to know everything that there is to know, however, reading as much as you can, attending classes, and using NCLEX review books has helped me a lot with the material and the exams. Recommended reference books and nursing journals will come in handy, especially in areas where you are a bit weaker. They are great resources now for your studies and in practice.
Note that most professors will not give NCLEX type questions on their exams, however, it is good to get a feel for what NCLEX questions are like from the beginning of your studies.
If you have anything specific you would like to ask, please send me a PM. Many have done it before you and many will do it after. Focus, dedication, and motivation are the keys to success.
Thanks!

I applied to BMCC's program with a 3.55 GPA.Unfortunately, that wasn't good enough. You can apply, but I suggest you look into other schools aswell. Many people who get into their program took one or 2 classes at a time.Maybe you should do the same.I should have done that! Maybe I would have gotten a 3.8 and above aswell!!! lol....You must take Math 104, a&P 1, pscy 100 and english 101.If you have a cummulative gpa of 3.8 or above in all 4 classes, you'll most likely get in.Good LucK!!

GOOOD LUCK ON YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS AS A NURSE!! I am a huge fan of studying from different materials (besides required text for classess) sometimes, I feel that it may help me even more. can you refer me to the review books that you used for each classes, if possible? I would greatly appreciate it!! thanks!:typing
