Anyone Been Pregnant or IS Pregnant During Nursing School?

We are actively trying to get pregnant, but there's a chance I could get into nursing school this coming January. I'm worried about being pregnant during nursing school, especially having to give birth in the middle of a semester. Has anyone been through this, and what did you end up having to do? I just don't want to delay nursing school. Let's say if I had a baby during the week in the middle of a semester, and after a few days of recovery.. went back to school... is that physically possible. And can a couple days be made up in nursing school? Any advice, experience, info in this area would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks :)

]I went to NS with a girl who was pregnant and everything was fine. She did skip the semester when she was due to deliver though. And at work when we see the nursing students I've seen plenty who looked like they were going to give birth right then. I think it would depend on you and how your pregnancy goes and what you, your school, and your OB-GYN decide.:DIf you really are looking foward to getting pregnant, go for it. I skipped a semester here and there because I have a special needs child. I did still graduate.:nurse:Good luck.

Thanks for your reply... I don't think I'm going to really try for a baby right now. If we get pregnant then we'll see what needs to be done school wise then... and If we don't get pregnant then I can just go to school and focus on that :) The last couple months we've been trying for a baby, following charts, body symptoms, etc... no more of that. But I'm not going to prevent it either.

My husband and I are going to start trying this spring, which will put me post graduation upon delivery. My rationale is I would rather be pregnant and only have to sit in class a couple hours a day and have 12 hrs of clinicals per week compared to the possibility of actually working as a nurse 8-12 hrs PER day!!

Hello, I'm currently pregnant w/my third child and is do during Christmas time. I start RN school in less than a week so I can't really tell you how school & being pregnant at the same time is but was told by others who have gone though it that it's difficult but doable. It depends on the person. If I had the choice I would have waited till I finished school first just because RN school is already intense enough but sometimes things happen for a reason and only you know if you'll be able to handle it all. I probably shoud have delayed a semester and started after the baby was born but since I will deliver during vacation (hopefully) and my doctor gave me the go ahead I will start when I am suppose to and if all else will take the semester off after the baby is born if I have too. Good luck and best wishes if you decide to have a baby now. And maybe if I become not too too busy with school and family I'll repost to tell you how school and being pregnant at the same time really is. I only know right now I'm already a bit overwhelmed having gone though the syllabus/course materials and already have a test a few days after school has started.

I am not pregnant but actively trying. Hopefully this month will be the month. I'm ovulating now!! I think LOL. I was accepted into nsg school this fall but deferred to work more and save $$$ before I go (so I can afford insurance for me and baby) and have great health insurance while pregnant.

I went back and forth about going to nsg school something i really want to do and having a baby another thing I really want to do.

So I am planning to go to school and have a newborn baby!!

Good Luck

As long as you're prepared for the possibility that you may have to sit out a semester (and are sure that the school will allow this), you should be fine. I didn't do it, we chose to wait to go off BC until after I graduated, but I had a few pregnany classmates. One was traditional and delivered over this summer (I'm accelerated and graduated, I know she expected to return in the fall). Another was supposed to induce over spring break last year, but the baby decided to come a week early. I believe she missed one day each of class and clinical - she was at our next lab session. We're allowed to miss clinical once each semester, and we do have to make it up. My school at least doesn't allow any special circumstances for anyone, but they will let you take a semester off if you need for health reasons. The last one graduated with me in August and is due in October. None of them had any complications that I knew of, so they were all able to meet their timetables. That doesn't mean it was easy though! You'd better have a good support system at home - emotionally as well as helping out with housework - and a really high level of motivation to be able to force yourself to study through hormone-induced fatigue. Good luck, however it works out!

So which is better? To be pregnant while in school? or Start school with a newborn?

I want to be a CRNA. So, I am going into an accelerated 16 month program. Working and then going into a 28 month CRNA program. So I will be in school and working for the next 4 years. I would like to have a baby before then.

I was pregnant during my junior year of nursing school & had my baby in July 2007. I think you need 1-2 months to get used to being a mom (this was my first baby) before going to school. You also need to set up babysitting and have a very supportive husband for the nights you need to study! Good luck!

I have a baby and am in nursing school. Its emotionally hard because I wish I were with my baby but I keep telling myself it will be worth it.

If I were going CRNA though... I don't know that I would have a baby before finishing, only because it pretty much takes you all over the place for the duration, and I would not want to be away from my kids for a week at a time that way. But everyone has to do what is right for them.

Im pregnant now and due in july and nursing school starts in august i wasnt going to go i was going to wait until the spring but I decided to go ahead and apply and if accepted I will go ahead. My bf is very supportive along with both sides of the family the all agreed that if I WANTED TO go back go head my doctor said it would be okay as long as she comes when she is suppose to 7/7/09 i am going to do the pt program so that i can still work and have time with her and my bf want feel worked out but i feel that i can do it because this is what i want so badly

I wouldn't recommend it. It's nice to just think about only needing a couple months off once the baby is born, but you have to think about what can happen during pregnant. Every pregnancy is different. I have had 4 myself. You might have a easy pregnancy that doesn't get in the way at all. You might have "morning sickness" that lasts all day for the entire pregnancy. That happened to my friend with her first pregnancy. No matter what they gave her it didn't help and she spent the entire pregnancy constantly sick.

I found while I was doing my Pre Reqs, I wanted to try for my girl again, all my boys were getting older and I just was getting the urge really bad. Thankfully my school did a wait list and I was stuck on it for 3 years because I got pregnant and had my daughter but I was put on bed rest at 3 months into my pregnancy. Things got so bad that when my daughter was 7 months old I had to have a hysterectomy and that put me in the hospital for 3 nights and than a week later I ruptured sutures and was back in for another 2 nights. It was nothing like my other pregnancy's.

Now I start nursing school in august and my daughter will be 2.5 in Sept. so although it's not ideal I feel ok putting her in Day Care and my other kids are all in school full time. There is no way I would have made it through Nursing School pregnant with her and they only let you defer for a year at my school and only one time, so with all that time missing I would have been kicked out for good.

Just the other end to think about.

No matter what, I wish you luck in whatever option you pursue :)
