Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hey just wondering if anyone is applying to UAB's MSN program. I'm applying to their FNP program, but still unsure as to whether or not i'm making the right decision about school choice. I'm specifically wondering about the time commitment. I work full-time and am wondering if I would still be able to keep my full-time job and do the distance learning format full-time as well. Also, cost is a major issue to me as my husband is racking up a gizzion dollars in dental school loans. Any info would be awesome.

Congratulations! I really mean that! I'd be lying if I said I weren't a bit jealous. :) I wish you the best of luck. Was UAB the only place you applied? Do you mind if I ask what your background is, GPA, MAT (if applicable). I would like to know who I am up against, if you know what I mean. :) Which specialty are you going for? Thanks for any info. And again, Congrats!!!

Thanks SillySally! UAB was not the only school to which I applied. I also applied to Georgia College and State University (received acceptance about a month ago) and Georgia State University (have not received an admission decision yet but recently had an interview) for Spring 2011. I also applied to Medical College of Georgia for Fall 2011 admissions and won't hear from them until April or so, but since I got into UAB, I won't be attending MCG. In all of these schools, I applied to the FNP program.

Also, I don't mind sharing my grades/scores. On the MAT, I received a 438. My overall GPA is 3.35 (I have two bachelor degrees). My GPA at the college from which I received my nursing degree is 3.49. My last 60 hours of nursing classes is about 3.3. I had a C in Peds, Patho, and Anatomy. I don't know what is most important to UAB, but there is a woman I work with whom is completing her BSN at UAB (she is an RN but only had an associates). She also applied to Spring '11 semester, but did not get in. I know she did not have MAT scores (they are not required if your GPA is over 3.2), but she was making nearly all A's in her BSN studies. She also has one or two more years of experience than me. I've been working for 5 years. Maybe they really like strong MAT scores? I was in the 93% for nursing majors.

I hope that helps. Good luck with everything:specs:

Thank you so much for sharing! Our stats are pretty similar. I do have 14 years of experience although the last twelve have been in the OR. I feel like this may hurt me a bit even though I don't think it should. I wonder how much emphasis they place on the essay portion? I felt pretty confident with mine at the time but the more I think about it, perhaps I could have worked harder on it. I just keep second guessing myself. I just want to make sure I give myself the best chance for my other applications.

I contacted the school, by the way, to get feedback on my application. I have yet to hear back. I am hoping they will be able to offer some advice.

Thanks again for responding,

And best of luck to you!

Hey everyone:

I know I'm responding kinda late in the game, and I hope you all have gotten in. Just to put my stats out there I applied for the UAB adult NP program for Fall 2010 and was accepted. I had a previous Bachelor's (2000) with a 3.05. I have a 3.75 in my BSN (2010), and I had no experience when applying since I had just graduated in May 2010.

Applications can vary, and some are better in one aspect than another. Mine was light in experience and heavy in grades. If you're light on grades make up for it with experience, professional organizations, great essays, etc. I think most schools out there look at more than just a GPA. The only thing a GPA proves is that you'd probably make it through the program. It doesn't say anything about what kind of NP you'd be.

I recently sent my application in for UAB's ANP program/post masters certificate for Fall 2011. I also applied to USA and SLU, but UAB is my first pick. I'm glad to hear you've enjoyed the program so far. I spoke with the dean of the program and she was very informative, leaving me with a good feeling about the school and the program. So for now I just have to wait....Anyone else applying for fall 2011???

My application for UAB MSN/CNS program has been completed for Fall 11 admission. They accepted my transcripts for the GRE Waiver.

Now, I will be twiddling my thumbs until I hear from them.

Anyone know when people usually start hearing about admissions for the Fall?

I've had my application submitting since late January, and finalized by the admissions board since Feb 22nd...

The application for Fall admission isn't due til May 27th.

I guess we're both early birds.

I received an email from an admissions advisor for the ACNP program that indicated my chances for admission are smaller because I'm not a resident of Alabama and they give preference to in-state residents. This was after I informed her that I'm a RN with 7 yrs experience and graduating on the dean's list with my BSN this May. I was surprised to hear that because that tidbit of info is not listed on their website. Has anybody esle heard of this rule/guideline? Has anybody been accepted while out of state?

Thanks so much!!

Hey all!

Just submitted my application for Fall 2011 for FNP. I don't know I'm going to wait this long to hear back! I just really hope my GPA/experience are good enough to get in! I will have only 1 year of RN experience come May.

I am applying for Fall 2011 at UAB for FNP. I am thinking of taking classes this summer as a non-degree graduate student to get ahead. Has anyone else done this? Any advice on what classes to take ahead of time or any advice at all on UAB's program would be VERY appreciated!! Thanks

Nice to meet you Erin! I actually am taking Research and Statistics right now as a nondegree student. I just applied as a nondegree nursing student through the graduate student apply now link. They contacted me like... the day after classes started that I got in. We are doing a group paper right now that is kind of challenging only because it is an online class, but the midterm and the material in general has been kind of basic. I'm hoping to get into another class in the summer maybe.

Is anyone here actually in the program or been in the program that would be willing to give me info on specific questions I have about the program? I would really really appreciate it! I am applying for Fall 2011 but am planning to get ahead and take classes this summer as a non-degree student. Any help at all would be SO GREAT!!

Calijaz- Thanks so much for writing me back! I would love to pick your brain about the class you are taking (so I am prepared for what I am getting myself into!) Would you be willing to email me or something? I would appreciate it so so so much!
