Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hey just wondering if anyone is applying to UAB's MSN program. I'm applying to their FNP program, but still unsure as to whether or not i'm making the right decision about school choice. I'm specifically wondering about the time commitment. I work full-time and am wondering if I would still be able to keep my full-time job and do the distance learning format full-time as well. Also, cost is a major issue to me as my husband is racking up a gizzion dollars in dental school loans. Any info would be awesome.

I'm sorry you guys got bad news...it makes me kind of scared because I had similar grades/MAT scores as you two had.

To Sillysally: Where do you live? I applied to four schools and have only heard back from one. The one I've heard back from and got accepted into was Georgia College and State University. If you live close to Macon, classes only meet once per week. It's my last choice because I live about one and a half hours away and don't want to drive that much.

GLG78, thanks for the info. I am in Chattanooga and will look into it. Macon, I think, is about 3 hours. Do the classes meet on weekends? That would be doable for me.

sillysally: No, the classes meet during the week and unfortunately, if you are taking more than one class, they may meet on different days of the week. You could also try Georgia State University in Atlanta. What is that, about a 2 hour drive? They have a "web-facilitated" program that meets on campus once a month. I applied there as well but have not heard back yet.

I don't mean to butt in, but how hard is it really to get in this program. What do you need to get in? I am just shock as you are. What is going on with this program? How good is this program? I can't believe not one of you got in. Don't give up!!!

I still haven't gotten a letter yet! I'm very, very anxious...

I'm sorry to the people who didn't get in. I hope you can find another path that works out for you. I keep hearing of people applying to grad school and not being accepted. The economy and the 2015 DNP recommendation are definitely changing how many people are applying. Of course different specialties might have less competition, for example, I've heard an education track has less competition. I don't know how hard it is to go back after getting an education masters to get an NP degree, but that could be something to consider. I know when there is a lot of competition GPA is going to make a big difference. I had a 3.9 GPA for my BSN and I have a graduate degree in another field.

I am still just in my first semester, but so far I have been very impressed with the program. The classes are well organized, the assignments are reasonable and I feel like I'm learning a ton. I know some of the other schools that are easier to get into are not as well run as UAB seems to be.

Are you attending UAB?

Lkwashington: did you apply to UAB? Or where have you applied? I have been looking all day at other programs to which I can apply and getting frustrated. I feel like I am going to run into the same thing I did with UAB.

Does anyone know if we can contact the school to discuss our application with someone so we can fund out where we fell short? Or is that a bad idea. I plan on reapplying. UAB was and still is my first choice. I just don't want to have to wait till next fall!

Anyone know anything about Troy University?

Yes, I'm attending UAB.

Sillysally, I think it is always worth trying to contact the school to see what information you can get. Some schools won't talk to you about your application, but it doesn't hurt to try. It sounds like a lot of schools are so overwhelmed with applicants right now that you might not get a very individualized response.

Hey SillySally,

No, I didn't apply to UAB. I was accepted to Walden University back in August. My plan is to attend in January. I am working toward my MSN in education. I earned my BSN from a ground University back in December '09. I have two prn jobs work in a hospital clinical setting and a nursing instructor. I would need something totally online now. I travel enough especially for my nursing instructor job. Enough about me.

The picture I am getting, UAB appears to be a great school for nurses. You can't give up. You can apply to other schools and do some good research on all programs provided. Each program is different by a class or two or maybe the requirements getting in. These ground programs are very competitive every year, whenever it is time to send acceptance letters. I am assuming it is the grades and/or admission tests. There is no easy answer. It may a good idea to call and find out why you didn't get accepted.

You may want to start a new thread to ask about Troy University. Don't forget to do your research. I tell fellow nurses want to be is to apply to all schools and go to the first one who calls because of competition with the students. The spaces are limited. Keep us posted. Good luck!!!

Mail just came today and I STILL haven't gotten a letter! Is anybody else still waiting? Has anybody gotten an acceptance?

Yay! I got accepted today!
