Anyone Applying to Spring 2014 Texas Tech 2nd Degree BSN

U.S.A. Texas

Anyone applying to Texas Tech's program, specifically the 2nd degree Austin program? What is your work experience? What prereqs have you taken/still need? Volunteering? GPA? Heard anything interesting lately about the program? Let's get to chatting!

Hi ya'll!! I'm so glad I found this forum. It took me a while, I was looking at the old forums and was about to start one lol

Great stats Aprilb410!!!

I am applying for the Austin Spring 2014 as well. I have finished with prereqs except for Pathophysiology which I'm about to take this Fall. I actually did take that course at UTSA but it was called something else and little did I know I was actually going to need that class. I ended up getting a C and so I'm just retaking it

My undergrad gpa is not so competitive :/ I just took a&p1&2 and microbio this summer and made A's so I'm hoping that brings my core or science gpa up. I haven't taken my TEAS, I take it next week!! A classmate of mine just took it and said the TEAS workbook wasn't much help, is that true??? I've been studying from that..

I got my CNA at the beginning of this year and started working at a Surgical ICU at a hospital over here in Houston. I have volunteered at hospitals ever since 2003 because I knew I wanted to work in health care. It wasn't until last year that I decided it was in Nursing hehe

So I have a question about the Merlin application, I've emailed Kayla but no response yet, for the "additional questions" how do we answer to "please explain"?? Is it in essay format? o.O

Nice meeting you all! :)))

@Aprilb410- Yay! Congratulations on submitting your application. I also got an 80% on my TEAS V and Kayla told me that it was competitive. She said that the average matriculate has an 80% on the TEAS V, so I think we're good!

@jennytmuw- Awesome experience! I thought that the TEAS V practice exams online were the most helpful, simply because the format is identical to the actual exam. They are a pretty penny, though. I approached the 'additional questions' as a short answer format. I think it is a way to expand on your resume. I haven't asked Kayla yet, but I'll be interested as to what she has to say. Hope that helps!

Hey there! Use the TEAS practice book!!! I got almost 100% on math, 70% on science and reading and English wasn't too great. If I were to go back I would concentrate on reading and grammar... I mainly studied science and brushed up in math (which was easy), but the 5 teas practice treats and the ati study manual helped A LOT!!! Hope that helps

April

Thanks April! :)

So Kayla replied back with the response for my question about the short answer questions we have to answer on Merlin with "Enter as much or as little as you wish to answer the questions. They do not have to be in any certain format"

Sooo yeaa Hhmm I will enter medium amount I suppose lol

So I just decided to apply to TTU in El Paso as well, but I do hope I get in Austin though.

time flies time flies!!

Hi! I am curious on how important y'all think the TEAS V score is to get accepted. I am wondering if that will make or break you. I am currently an LVN working in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, and Well-Baby Nursery at a Level I Hospital at night. I also work as a clinic nurse two days out of the week. I have all my pre-reqs completed and passed. Let me know what you guys think! Good luck to everyone! :)

All:

I thought my experience applying last year would be helpful. I did make it to the interview but did not get into the program. At the time I had 8 months experience working as a CA in the NICU, volunteer experience working with local school district in their coordinated school health committee. My overall GPA was 3.45, 3.7 in science with +/-84% (not sure exactly) on my TEAS. I had all of my prerequisite completed at the time of application.

The feedback I received was to improve my overall GPA, as the cohort's min was 3.5 (however I do know a few exceptions to this). In my opinion if you have foreign travel combined with volunteer work they are really impressed. One way (i hear) they weed out the 150 applicants (36-40 spots) is if you have completed all of your prereqs, basically it docks you but if you have work experience you may get additional "points".

If you make it to the interview stage (you will be interviewed by a panel of about 4-5 people who are instructors and administrators) have questions ready and highlight any experience that makes you interesting (foreign volunteer work), If you are a single mom, I wouldn't mention it. Bring a photo of yourself to the interview. I can't stress it to you enough that if you make it to the interview stage, it will make or break you how the interview goes. Mine went ok, but I don't think I bragged on myself enough.

@tj226- I don't think the TEAS score will make or break you, but I would recommend shooting for above a 70%. Kayla, one of the academic advisors, told me that a 70% or above is considered "good". It seems like you have a lot of experience as an LVN. Do you also have a bachelor's degree? Good luck!

@kcame- Your post kind of makes me nervous, but thanks for all of the good information! It's nice to have input from someone who has been through the process. Any more insight into the interview? I've read on past threads about what types of questions they ask, but anything to add? Thanks so much!

@kaseyroo - yes, I received my bachelors degree in another field then went to LVN school. Thanks for your advice!

I also had an interview for the Fall 2013 semester and was not accepeted. I have volunteer experience past and present. I have been a CNA for 7 years. I have nursing home experience, Mother/Baby, and I currently work in the Emergency Department and have been working in the ED for 2 years. My overall GPA is 3.4...not sure about my Sciences...My TEAS exam score was not in the 80's it was at the proficient level but not high enough. I have a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Minor in Education. I was a teacher for one year. The feedback I got was to retake a course to increase my GPA and/or retake my TEAS exam. I will be retaking my TEAS exam at the beginning of September.

Hi guys!

So, I submitted my application about a week ago!

Kayla said that your resume, CPR certification, and CNA certification can all be e-mailed to her or the other advisor. Don't forget to scan front and back of your CPR certification.

Two of my transcripts are still en route, but it's officially in God's hands.

I hope everyone is doing well with their applications!

Hi!

So I have to retake TEAS V because I made a 75% :( Juuust because I failed the math part. I did not have time to complete that section--there was 10 minutes left and 20 questions that I had unanswered. I am still confused if blank questions count against you or not. Do you happen to know? I guessed those last questions and I am obviously a bad guesser.

So we need to submit our CPR and CNA certification?? I didn't know that. Good to know!! I wonder if we can scan our TEAS V scores too...

You may want to check with an advisor as to whether or not you actually need to re-take it. Here is a direct quote via e-mail from Kayla when I asked about the TEAS, "We will accept proficient level (58.7%) or above on the TEAS V".

Unanswered questions are counted as incorrect.

Also, I believe the TEAS scores must be submitted from the testing site or requested at http://www.atitesting.com for $26 per transcript sent.

Your CPR and CNA certification have to be submitted by the program start date, not the application close date.

You must also submit a transcript or certificate of completion of a medical terminology course by the program start date.
