U.S.A. Texas

Anyone applying to Texas Tech's program, specifically the 2nd degree Austin program? What is your work experience? What prereqs have you taken/still need? Volunteering? GPA? Heard anything interesting lately about the program? Let's get to chatting!

Hello! I am applying for Spring 2014..:) However, I am a little confused on where the school is located. I thought it was in Austin? But after some researching I'm confused. Is the school in Marble Falls-Highland Lakes?

The Texas Tech 2nd degree BSN program is run through the University of Texas Tech which is in Lubbock.

My understanding is all classes are online and they work with local hospitals here in the Austin area for us to do our clinicals.

Hi everyone!

I'm so glad someone start this thread! I will be applying for the Spring 2014 Austin cohort as well. I am going to be finishing up my last pre-requisite in the fall, which is physiology.

I have been a CNA for about a year and a half on a medical-surgical, orthopedics, and oncology unit at St. David's Round Rock. I was also able to do a temporary assignment on a telemetry and intermediate care unit and receive phlebotomy training (My supervisor is awesome!). I did an internship for two summers at an occupational/urgent care clinic at NASA in Houston, but I'm not sure how entirely relevant it is.

Most of my volunteer experience consists of working with children and babies; I would say I have about 100 hours or so? I have some extracurricular activities in a public health organization at UT and a research assistant position on an alcohol research team. Again, I'm not sure if this would be considered valuable.

I took the TEAS V in May and made somewhere around an 80%. I keep in good contact with Kayla (one of the academic advisors) and she told me that a 70% or above is considered a good score. She also mentioned that the average score for an admitted student is 80%. I can give anyone tips on the TEAS V, if you'd like! I graduated from UT in December 2012 and I would say that my grades are not bad, but nothing spectacular, which causes me the most anxiety.

I am very hopeful, but also nervous! I hope we can all help each other get through this very nerve-wracking application process. :)

Hi kaseyroo!

Sounds like you have some awesome experience under your belt!

I still need to take the TEAS and I have two classes left for the fall, physiology and pathophysiology.

Where are you taking physiology?

Any pointers for the TEAS would be great!

I'm so nervous about getting into the TT program, it is a huge deal for me

at this point in my life and not getting in would be devastating I think. I've been a cna for a little over 3 years, mostly nursing home experience and I've been working in the women's center at CTMC for over a year which is L&D, PP and NICU. Would love to chat!

@kaswyroo - that's a pretty darn well-rounded pre nursing background. You could probably get in to any nursing school with that experience.

@ms311 - I think you're a shoe-in, too. You guys will be halfway to the NCLEX a year from now.

Hey Swank,

Sorry for the delayed response. I thought I had this set to email me whenever there was a response to this thread, but I guess not.

I complete my CNA class on Aug 7 and then hopefully can find a job ASAP.

I still have patho and nutrition to take, which I'm doing at ACC online. I actually just ordered the ATI Teas V study guide and hope to take it sometime in the next few months. Other than that, I think I should be all set. Good luck to you Swank and everyone else! Only a week till we can start sending in the applications!

This may be a dumb question, but can anyone share with me where we can find a list of dates/times that the Teas V is offered?

@ms311- I will be taking Physiology at ACC at the Round Rock campus, I believe. The TEAS is challenging and requires a lot of study if you're rusty and/or weak on your math and sciences. I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing the practice exams on the ATI website. They are something like $35 per exam, but the format is identical to the actual TEAS and I think it's good preparation. It looks like you've got plenty of experience, which is probably in their top three of most qualifying factors. No worries! :)

@Swank123- Thanks so much! Feedback is great to hear. I hope you're having luck finding a hospital job! I would recommend looking into PCT I positions on Med/Surg at St. David's Main. They are always hiring!

@Flyonn- If you live in the Austin area, the TEAS V is offered at Texas State University virtually every day of the week. Mind you, it costs an arm and a leg to take it there. I'll drop the link for where you can register with them down below:

TEAS V BSN : Testing, Research Support & Evaluation Center : Texas State University

Can anyone clarify for me what the application deadline is? I keep seeing different dates. Thanks!

@ms311- The application deadline for the Austin cohort is October 1. I believe that application opened on August 1. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know exactly how the one page resume needs to be formatted and what needs to be on it?

@brabuckl- I don't think there are any specifications on how it should be formatted or what needs to be on it, but I would assume that is your traditional resume. I would include education, health care/job experience, extracurricular activities, community service/volunteer experience, honors/awards, and certifications. In terms of format, I would specify your role and responsibility in your job and volunteer experience. Also, include accurate dates and hours. I hope that helps!

Hey guys!!! I just submitted my application! Haven't turned in my résumé, CNA certification or TEAS V score. I got my score tonight for TEAS V and it 80% which they say is advanced. My overall GPA is 3.7 and science GPA 4.0. I have completed all the pre-reqs. I did a CNA certification but have no experience with it. I have a previous degree from Tech, but no volunteer experience or work experience in the field. FINGERS CROSSED!!!

Should I retake the TEAS?? What's everyone else's stats?? I'm SOOOOO nervous, I HAVE TO GET IN!!!
