Anyone applying for LCC's Nursing program this spring?

Published

Hi!

I am trying to start a thread for people applying to the Lansing Community College Nursing Program Spring 2010!

Any and all posters welcome!

Lindy,

I applyed for the full-time prefered but will accept part-time. I am like you and really would like to do full-time but didn't want to limit my options either. I have two kids and a husband to take care of at home but I am lucky enough to not work while going through school so instead I take out tons of student loans to live on. I will regret it later on but at least for now there is food on the table and I am able to spend my time on kids and school.

The wait on getting my acceptence letter is killing me but I guess with something like this there will always be something else to wait for. Waiting for the term to start, waiting for school to be over, waiting to take the NCLEX, waiting for the results of said test ;)

I know I should learn my patience now but oh my goodness I would feel so much better if I just knew.

I have a question and I wasn't sure if it was answered all ready. I am going to be completing my LPN training this fall (2010) and I would like to apply to LCC quick track RN program for current LPN's Repiratory Therapist, and Paramedics. I was told that the only thing required of me was to work 1000 hours as an LPN but I am not sure if that's true. So does anyone know what the requirments are to get into that program? And also if you know of any other schools in Michigan that offer an LPN to RN course. :clown:

Thanks

Hi Candace,

The best advice I have for you would be to check the LCC nursing program website and look at the requirements there. To recieve an Associate's degree from LCC you do need some general education credits that may be satisfied if you took classes at a different college. You should check out the LCC nursing program website at www.lcc.edu/nursing . The program you will be looking for is under the career-ladder nursing program and it is one of the non-traditional tracks. On the right hand side of the webpage there will be a link that says admission requirements and that is where you will want to look. After you look at the website to answer questions you will also want to contact an academic advisor at the school to go over everything you may need. The number for the academic advising center is 517.483.1904 or 800.644.4522, ext. 1904 if Lansing is long distance to you.

Good Luck and please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks a lot. I have a lot of those pre reqs because I am in my LPN portion of my schooling. I was just looking to LCC because I heard that they have a good Nursing program. I will still be looking into going there. I was just hoping that I could get straight into their program.

Hey all,

I am a fellow LCC star. I graduated from the accelerated program in May '09. PM me if you have any questions about LCC's nursing program. Just an FYI, I would put LCC's program against any in Michigan, I think we cover everything that the other community colleges and universities do and in some cases even more. Some of my fellow new grads didn't get to start IVs in nursing school or get to do as many dressing changes, IV meds, etc. as we did so, I guess what I am trying to say is, its hard to get in, there are a lot hoops to jump through to graduate, but in the end you should feel confident that you have learned a ton and are read to start learning how to take care of patients on your unit.

Good luck!

I just started LCC's traditional program this January. Feel free to ask me any questions that you might have!:)

I have a million questions! But first off I want to say congratulations and how is it so far? Are the classes all really hard or are they starting off ok? Have you started clinicals? Are the teachers nice and helpful? I applyed in Janurary with 85 points and am hoping to get in for the 2010/2011 school year.

Spartan05,

Congrats on graduating! It must be so exciting for you! I am glad you like LCC's program. I haven't started it yet but I have been going to LCC for all of my pre-reqs and such. So you were in the accelerated program huh? I have a question for you. Is it as hard as they say? I applied for the traditional program so I would assume the accelerated program must be even tougher. I finished all of my pre-reqs with a 3.94 gpa. I got a 3.5 in Pharm and a 3.5 in Math 112. All of the rest I have gotten 4.0's in though and earned my general associates degree summa cum laude. I am not trying to brag just giving some background on myself so that I could be given a fair judgment as to if you think I would be able to keep up the good grades once starting nursing school or do you think they might drop?

I am 27, am married with 2 elementary school kids, and have the luxury of not working while in school. I am hoping that will higher my changes of getting good grades. If there is ever any words of wisdom you would like to share or study techniques that worked please let me know and again, Congratulations!!!

Thanks! I have a BS from State and I don't think I have ever had this much work! I felt liek the pre-reqs were more like HS classes. This is definately a full blown college class. My fiance is in Law school and I pretty much have just as much work as he does! He keeps saying welcome to grad school whenever I complain, and that's how it feels. It's a lot of reading, studying, etc. The first class NURS 150 is like 4 classes built into 1. I think you only pay for it as a 9 credit class, but it feels like you are taking 16 credits. There is Fundamentals lecture, Skills Lab, PA lab, Med. math & Med. term, and Clinicals. I would highly suggest getting med. term out of the way this summer if you haven't already. Its one less thing to worry about in the program, believe me, you'll have enough to worry about. Do yourself a favor and try to find your books on-line, otherwise it's $500 + just for the required texts!:crying2: I think I spent half that!:) I am currently working about 20hrs/ wk and they recommend you don't work more than 15, if at all. The teachers are all very nice, at least the ones that I have met. We don't start clinicals until the middle of Feb. so I don't know much about them yet, but I have been told by people in the program as well as some of the faculty that you will have a lot of work before and after the first day of clinicals each week (like 6-8 hours of work). I had 80 points when I applied. I wanna say that you will be ok, but they also told me that I would get into the accelerated program with 50, which wasn't the case. It all depends on how many points everyone has. I must say though, I'm glad that I'm in the traditional and not the accelerated. Kudos to those who have gotten through that program. Hopefully I haven't freaked you out too much, but yes, when they say it's hard...they aren't joking! Hopefully I have given you a good idea of what to expect. Good luck on getting in. Let me know if you have any other questions, I would be happy to help!

Well I got my volunteer hours in. 96 hours in one month while working full time and taking care of my daughter as a single mom. Yeah that was fun :p. But it seems they do not except an extenship as volunteer hours. So I dropped off my application in the drop box Saturday afternoon and should have 80 points.

I can only apply to the part-time program, because I have to work while I go to school. Does anyone no if this is going to be a disadvantage to getting in? Like could 80 points be enough to get me into the full-time program, but not be enough to get me into the part-time program because there is only 1/3 of the seats????? I really wanted to put that I would take the full-time option but I know it is not feasible.

This is gonna be a long 2 month wait. On the flip side, the volunteer work I did at the hospital may have gotten me a job there which will be great to be working in a hospital while in the nursing program as it will be a lot easier to get a job as an RN when I am done if I am already employed at a hospital. :yeah:

Hi Diane,

Now I don't know for sure but this is what I have been told. The full-time traditional program is the preferred program. They have actually been losing applicants for the part-time program. I do really believe that you should be able to get into the part-time program with 80 points. Now if you waited a year or more to apply I do not know if that would cut it but I think for this year you should be fine. I applyed for the full-time program but I am lucky enough to not work and take tons of student loans out to survive. I cannot go to school full-time, be a full-time mom of 2 and work at the same time. Everything would suffer which is something I am not prepared to have happen. I would much rather have extra loans to pay off later than get bad grades and have my kids suffer.

Good Luck.

Crystal:)

Anyone know about when people got their acceptance letter last year? I am not sure how much longer I can wait without going insane ;)
