Hey everyone,
I will be applying to the school of Nursing at University of Miami for Fall 2009. I need to complete my current courses at FIU and about 3 courses in the summer to finish up the pre-reqs for UM. Just wondering if anyone else is applying/considering the Basic BSN program at UM? Did any of you attend the information session that was on Jan. 13th? Anyone spoken to Yenisey Cabrera (the nursing advisor)? Are there any current students from the Basic program? How is it?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks a million for your sound advise. I see and share your point. But, I do believe that the issue is closed to be solved becuase now exams are recorded, to prevent cheating. And also the report of last year board passing rate shows improvement. Hopefully those are good sings... Because it is in fact an expensive school!
Oh do you happen to know if there is any website that report the actual passing rate on the NCLEX, so I can visit it and find out a little more....

The NCLEX Yearly report and Quarterly report can be found in this webpage:

Hey Everyone,
I really hope that I can be accepted for Fall 2010 (seems so far away). My prereqs will be complete in Dec 09 and a pretty good GPA. Would any of you recommend applying from now for Fall 2010? I really hope to get the scholarship also. Any advice, wisdom, or sanity checks will be greatly appreciated!
This site is awesome.
I'm not sure if you can apply this early but I recommend you to call the school of nursing and talk to either Gloria or Yenesey. They really run the place, and know all the specifics of the program. I will also recommend you to go online to http://www.miami.edu and go to the school of nursing and under current student and check the student handbook. It has a great deal of info about the program.
Hope this helps!
Hey Everyone,
You all know that we have that "Mandatory" Orientation on Aug 23rd for the School of Nursing, are we suppose to wear our uniforms on this date? And is anybody going to the general UM Orientation on Aug 20th-21st?
I don't know about you guys but I am really excited to start this program!!!

Hello Tatortots,
What they told us about applying early is as follows; "Apply when you have a few pre-reqs left to finish". I applied when i still had 3 pre-reqs left (my last semester). The Pre-Reqs GPA is a big factor in achiving acceptance into this program. So if you still have alot of classes left to finish, then I recomend you wait a bit because they wont have enough information to asses your application. Best of luck!
I recall the orientation day did not require uniforms (this was back in 05, graduated 07 before the new nsg school opened). Pretty much all of the faculty was introduced, the rules were explained, scheduling issues were resolved , a nursing fundamentals lecture was given, you actually recieved CEU's for domestic violence lecture, HIV, and medical errors. It was a bit hectic but exciting nonetheless:specs: , Im sure the system runs like a well oiled machine now. How I miss those days..
how's-it?

I don't want to discourage anyone but back in April of 2007 UM's Nursing program was placed on probation by the State of Florida Board of Nursing "due to low scores on the State Exam and cheating issues"
The article states the UM was required to follow a self improvement plan and to report to the State Nursing board every 6 months for up to 2 years.
"Nursing schools are in risk of probation after their student's passing rate on the boards fall by more than 10% below the National Average" ( " Nursing School's Probation status a Surprise"( Miami Heral 4/18/2007)
I would believe that UM President Donna Shalala ( former Secretary of Health and Human Services) has made sure that the problems are being addressed and resolved by now. I have great respect for what she has accomplished during her tenure as the head of UM... ( Miller school of Med and UM hospital)
If you are going to invest $33k a year make sure that the school you are attending will teach you the skills necessary to pass your boards.
Hope that helps.
