Anyone applying to the Basic BSN Program at UM Fall 2009??
I don't want to discourage anyone but back in April of 2007 UM's Nursing program was placed on probation by the State of Florida Board of Nursing "due to low scores on the State Exam and cheating issues" The article states the UM was required to follow a self improvement plan and to report to the State Nursing board every 6 months for up to 2 years. "Nursing schools are in risk of probation after their student's passing rate on the boards fall by more than 10% below the National Average" ( " Nursing School's Probation status a Surprise"( Miami Heral 4/18/2007) I would believe that UM President Donna Shalala ( former Secretary of Health and Human Services) has made sure that the problems are being addressed and resolved by now. I have great respect for what she has accomplished during her tenure as the head of UM... ( Miller school of Med and UM hospital) If you are going to invest $33k a year make sure that the school you are attending will teach you the skills necessary to pass your boards. Hope that helps.

Am I crazy for accepting the invite to U of Miami accelerated nursing?
Back in 2005 I applied for their accelerated program and since I was not getting any follow up letters I decided to call. Well they had lost my paperwork and guess what? it was too late to get into the program for 2006. That told me right then and there that they were very disorganized. A year later reading the Miami Herald and finding that they were placed on probation, did not surprised me. If you ask around I keep hearing that nurses graduating from Barry University and FIU have much better bedside experience than those from UM. If you are going to spend the $$ in a private university. I will go Barry all the way !

Criminal Backround Checks for Nurses?
I am currently a pre-nursing student and feel that my career has just been halted by a recent arrest. I would like to get some feedback and advice on how to handle my specific situation. Four years ago I had to File for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. The Company I was working for at the time had to close its doors and almost simultaneously my husband lost his business. One specific debt for $825.00 was to the Sate and I was not advice by attorney that I still would be responsible for it after the bankruptcy ended. So,one day while here at work I get a call from the Local Police Dept. that I was to be served a subpoena and they took me away. I spend the longest 8 hrs of my life sitting at the Women Detention Center. I will not be convicted of any charges but I will always have an arrest record until the day I die.... So will anyone outhere please tell me How would this affect my future employment opportunities within nursing? Before this incident I considered myself a model citizen and have many people willing to give me recommendation letters for every Company that I have ever worked for. Needing help in sunny Miami...
