Hello everyone,

Keep coming on here after long gaps of being AWOL. Hope all is well on herewith everyone?, works been very busy and I'm now working back in the outpatients department after another bad experience on the ward i was working on...keep seeming to have bad experiences with bullying managers where i'm based, except for in outpatients where i have now gained my confidence and self esteem back...

I am curious to know has anyone succeeded in making up hours for the uk, I know that stenberg college in canada no longer offer the course .City university I think do offer one...I need to take the plunge now and just do the course...has anyone done it and found it rather hard working fulltime too?? Guess its just motivation really?

Sorry, but doing the hours in the OR will not meet the requirements. Be aware that one cannot just do a clinical placement and expect that to count as hours as well. Requirements of both the US as well as Canada are that the hours are completed in an approved school of nursing and must contain clinical as well as theory hours at the same time, in the same term. They must also be done so that they will be on an actual transcript or they will not be accepted.

The hours are easily made up at community colleges here in the US; one usually just needs to enroll as a guest student. Each of the sections are about 6 weeks in length on average.

Much has already been written on this topic under the International Forum, so please just do a search there. Making up the hours is not just specific to those from the UK.

Hi Suzanne,

I have been talking about it in previous messages that, I contacted Brighton university who does a course for preparation for nursing overseas which involves the theory bit covered by university and the practice I need to find my own placement so that is why I was asking if i can do the theory with brighton and placement at paeds theatres because i am working in theatres and includes peads. also at the end of this course i will get a transcript for my hours. For mental health, I have taken up dayo's advice and contacted the ward she went on. They are quite happy to take me on for 1-2 days per week on my off days in my present job.

I need to ask Suzanne and Silverdragon a question. When i was doing my training, I did a specialist placement in ER. I did work a few shifts at peads ER and mental health but I am not sure if that will count. can you pls advice

Doing peds cases in the OR will not count as clinical hours in peds specifically related to what is needed for licensure in the US and Canada. It needs to be on a peds unit. I have never seen one state or even CGFNS accept the peds rotation being done 100% in the OR.

The states are also getting tighter with their requirements as well.

The clinical rotation should have you caring for the child on the nursing uni;, taking their vital signs, giving them medications, meeting their psychological needs, etc. In the OR, they are asleep and covered by sterile drapes.

Remember that just because a program overseas offers a course, it does not mean that it will be accepted all over.

Easier to do a 6 week program in the US in the first place that will directly meet the requirements for the US.

A peds unit or the PICU would meet the requirements, as well as the peds ER. But not the OR.

Once again thank you,

sorry for my ignorance but will georgia state uni classify as community college or can you pls suggest any community colleges in GA.

hello:

do what Brighton university ask you to do. l used them and two other girls used them.. we were all approved to take nclex. we have all passed nclex. mermaid ward at homerton university is okay for mental health and st

Mary's is a very good hosiptial. l did my placement on their pead unit. Don't complicate things for yourself.

At the end of the course, they will issue you a transcript, you can't send the trascript yourself. the american board of nursing of your choice will contact them directly.

so this is what l did. l first sent my transcript to vermont state board of nursing. they sent a letter back that l need to make up some hours. After making up the required hours, l called them and they sent me verification of education. l sent it to Brighton and a month later l got a letter from vermont state that they have approvecd me to sit for the board. 7 months later l passed Nclex. Moved to Maryland and endorse to maryland.

don't complicate things. just do the hours

Hi Dayo,

I have asked my university to send me transcripts. now did you do this process yourself? I am going to send that and an application to vermont state. did you ask them to verify or did you apply as if you wanted to apply for nclex? I have the form for brighton uni i havent filled it out yet. do you apply to brighton and then for the placement area or what? pls explain the process as much as you can and i will owe my reunion with my family to you. but did you fill it out before you had your transcrpts. or shall i wait. mermaid ward is now gardner ward and i dont know but i spoke to a charge nurse and he said it would be ok even the hosp. HR approved it over the phone but need to take my uni letter for verification so that they can do all checks. which ward did you apply for paeds? it helped me with mermaid for which i am extremely obliged to you. thanks a ton.

l did the whole thing myself. go to www.vermontstate.com. go to licensing and nursing. read the instructions. you need to pay them 150 dollars. they don't accept bank draft from uk. ask your family in america to buy you western union money order in us. whey they send you the money order, send it to vermont with your applications.

you have to send page 5 of the vermont application (not sure if it is still page 5 but is is called education verification) take it to your original school, they have to sent it directly to vermont. after making up your hours at brighton, you need to send or take another copy of education verification to brighton. they also have to send it to vermont. This is a proof you have make up the hours. l will not discuss how they to make up the theory hours on line but brighton will tell you what to do. they will send everthing to vermont and they are very fast and reliable.

funny l can't remember the name of the ward. all l know is that it is on the 7th floor at st mary's in paddington.

if you send me a personal mail l will give you the ward manager name and her phone number, but you can't do this without st. mary's human resorces. call the human resorces and ask for the clinical placement manager. you have to meet up with her and she will give you a contract, after signing the contract she will place you on a paed ward. The clinical director's name is st. Mary's phone number). if you don't get her, ask for her email and email her, set up an appointment.

make sure you do enough hour for nclex requirements. l did 70 hours instead of 60 on each just to be safe. it is better to do more hours than do less.

after finishing the clinical hours, make sure you keep up with vermont on the status of your application. just to sit back and wait for that to contact you, call them. email them etc.

good luck.

by the way l went for my first job interview today, wish me luck. l also met 3 other nurses from England on the ward. 2 irish, and one English.

Hi dayo,

Fantastic news. I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart. as i said before if this works, i owe it to you.

Once again thank you,

sorry for my ignorance but will georgia state uni classify as community college or can you pls suggest any community colleges in GA.

That is actually a four year university. They may permit guest students, not sure. I have just seen easier access with the two year community colleges.

I am not sure of the specifics for the community colleges just there but you can easily Google the area and then get the names of the community colleges. Usually one needs to register in advance as a guest student, and then when they get an opening, they will contact you right away.

FusionFire, I'm not sure which ward Dayo went to, but I had placement at St Mary's for three months as a student. Great Western is the general paediatric ward, Grand Union is the infectious diseases/haematology ward and there is also a day care unit (can't remember the name) and a PICU - all paediatric and on the 7th floor of the QEQM Building. There's a NICU in a separate building.

St Mary's is one of the easiest hospitals to get to, as it's right beside Paddington station. I live just outside of West London, and I was able to get there in under 20 minutes every day.

Hi MandaAnda,

Thanks for the information. I am exploring all avenues.

Has anybody managed to get any information regarding the course at Brighton Uni? I have been trying for months to get any information regarding this course, and can't get anywhere. I have sent so many emails, phone calls etc and either no one replies, they send me the wrong info or say they will get back to me and never do. Is this course actually still running??
