Anybody succeeded in making up hours for usa?

Published

Hello everyone,

Keep coming on here after long gaps of being AWOL. Hope all is well on herewith everyone?, works been very busy and I'm now working back in the outpatients department after another bad experience on the ward i was working on...keep seeming to have bad experiences with bullying managers where i'm based, except for in outpatients where i have now gained my confidence and self esteem back...

I am curious to know has anyone succeeded in making up hours for the uk, I know that stenberg college in canada no longer offer the course .City university I think do offer one...I need to take the plunge now and just do the course...has anyone done it and found it rather hard working fulltime too?? Guess its just motivation really?

Yes, l did make up my hours at Brighton University in feb 08. l passed my nclex on jan 15th.

l went to Thames Valley university. Finished in 2006 and started Brighton university for make up hours. June 2007, while working at Northwick park. got my results from Brighton in March 2008. Moved to USA in April 2008. Passed Nclex Jan. 2009. l got my clinical placement myself. l did mental health at homerton hospital and pead. at St. Mary's.

Good luck

Hi dayo,

how long did the make up hours course last. I have just placed an inquiry at brighton university. i qualified in sept 2008 and have inquired to several agencies. however, our new branch programme does not let us do clinical hours in paeds and mental health. i am working in theatres already and dont want to really quit my job. can you please give me some information i would be very obliged to you.

I was working full time and going to clinical on my days off. when you find a clinical, take your off duty to the ward manager and work it out with her. Try mermaid ward at hackney hospital for mental health placement, that is where l did my mental health placement. you will have to find your clinical placement your self. which means you have to write a letter to clinical director of each hospital you want to apply to and ask if they would allow you to do clinical placement. try islington hospital, call human resources and ask for clinical director. you can call human resources and ask for clinical director, speak to her and ask for her e-mail. That way you can communiciate with her via email. l think there is another university that offer the programme. l can't remember the name off head.

Good luck.

Another problem is there is no green card for few years for foreign nurses. so if you apply thru agencies it will take years before you can get green card. why don't you try Canada?. America is in recession right now.

Hi Dayo,

thanks for the tips. what about the university how did you manage that. it is well and good tht i make up hours on my days off but what about university for the theoratical component. the reason i want to try usa is because my whole family is over there and hopefully in 2-3 years time, i will have my blood relation visa (not sure the term) will come out so this is something long term. can you please try and remember if there is a uni in london then it is better for me. thank you once again.

Not many universities offer this top up, you could always approach some local universities and see if there is something you can work out with them. How long ago did your family apply for a application for you, average family application if over 21 is 8-10 years and can change if married to a bit longer. Alternative if planning on visiting the US for a holiday is see if you can make hours up as a guest student with local nursing schools

Hi

I approached Brighton university in England and they do offer this course for top up. My mom applied for me in 2001, currently august 2000 files are processing so hopefully not more than 3 years. i do visit atlanta on regular bases i am not sure how to approach the local universities as guest student to make up hours if possible please guide me.

visit this link L http://www.brighton.ac.uk/snm/courses/post-reg/modules/module_info.php?id=NW312

and yes as Dayo suggested, you have to arrange your own clinical placement.

thanks a ton

Get your family, if they can, to pop in and speak to someone explaining your situation saying you only need to make a few hours up and would it be possible to do so as a guest student. Let them know which courses you need to make up

Hi,

unfortunately, if i am to get things done it will have to be me. my mom dont speak english and it is very hard for her to explain the situation, do you think i can call and ask. thank you once again.

No reason for you not to call just thought it would be easier with them being in the US. Stress to them it is just for the courses you need to make up not for the full nursing course.

Happy to help even if it is just a suggestion here and there :)

Hi Silverdragon,

Thanks for your suggestion about guest student. I just remembered that the neighbour in Atlanta is going to Mercer university in GA doing BSN. I have asked her if that is possible. However, I wanted to ask you something. Can the paeditric hours be in paed theatres? if that is so I will be over the moon.

As far as I know you have to do theory and practical/clinical at the same time so I doubt paeds theatre will count but I guess a lot will depend on the course
