Anybody go to Keiser?

U.S.A. Florida

Just wondering if anybody went to or is going to Keiser University's nursing program?

I am not sure how mny you need to get right, but I know you have to have these scores to get into Keise:

Reading - 76

Math - 75

Science - 56

English - 76

In the prep book it tells you how long ech section it, but from wht Ihve read, it doesn not tell you how much time you have left.

the website says :

Reading-89%

Math-65%

Science-63%

English-78%

The highest score is 100, right ? seems like they dont ask much for science, im practicing for the TEAS with study guides and some TEAS software i found online

I am also curious about Kaiser. I am wondering what kind of reputation the school has. I am looking for the best education that a 40 year old mother of 2 can get!:p

i have read good and bad reviews about them .. is expensive especially if you dont have your general education and prereqs done .. if you already have everything done then it should cost around $28000 ... you only take the wonderlic test (piece of cake), TEAS exam and

interview with the Nursing Program Director

you mean 50 questions

about the teas .. how much do u have to get in each section in order to be accepted in the nursing program ?

How did you get financial aid ? pellgrants? loans? private loans? I know they work with sallie mae. I have read that some people have to pay $50 every month and others even more than that .. why is that ? are all your expenses (tuition and books) covered by financial aid, do u have to pay something out of your pocket ? do you have a job ? I know if you dont have a job you will receibve more money in the form of pellgrants

is teas the only test we have to take in order to be accepted ? that test doesnt seem very difficult im more concerned if financial will cover my tuition and books .. i know is around $7000 per semester .. i'm trying to get my associate of art and complete all the prereqs at broward college so i can pay less money at keiser .. sorry for all the questions

Questions are good! After you get accepted to the University then you will take the teas test and that will be the last entrance test. Financial aid/pell alone will not cover your tuition, if you qualify for financial aid you will still have to take out loans or something (however you choose to cover your tuition) and it is cheaper to take your prerequisites somewhere else...that is what i did.

could you be more specific please ? how are you paying for tuition and books ? finacial aid, pellgrants and loans ? I have read they work with sallie mae for loans ... did u get loans all by yourself or did you have to get a cosigner ?

"The highest score is 100, right ? seems like they dont ask much for science, im practicing for the TEAS with study guides and some TEAS software i found online". I realilize what the website says, but as of April 8th whan I went in for my entrance interview, I was given a paper that has the scors I mentioned on it. And, as far as the scienc not requiring a higher score, it is undoubtably the hardest section, which is something said here all the time, and, in addition, my admissions counselor even said the reason the science score is so low is because of the difficulty of the section.

I suppose if you are very familiar with science then the test may seem easy, but for many, we haven't really dealt with science for years, which does make it difficult.

Keiser says that one must have minimum cumulative grade average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for general education courses.

the question is .. what are the general education courses ?

here it says general education courses (30 hours)

http://ksweb.keiseruniversity.edu/downloads/nursing_gened.pdf

does this mean you have to get a 3.0 gpa in all those courses including the science courses ? or only the courses that are not science ?

what happens if your gpa is not 3.0 but you pass the teas and have all the prereqs done ?

could you be more specific please ? how are you paying for tuition and books ? finacial aid, pellgrants and loans ? I have read they work with sallie mae for loans ... did u get loans all by yourself or did you have to get a cosigner ?

I only qualified for $3,000 worth of financial aid, after that my financial aid advisor walked me through the loan process. I did not do it all by myself (i probably would have screwed myself up trying to do it alone). I sat in his office and did the applications. I think they work with sallie mae but the company I went through is called Richland. The first loan they had me apply for required a cosigner which i don't have. Then they had me apply for richland which is one of those companies that are a little more lenient and i got approved without a cosigner. So i ended up with $3000 that I don't have to repay and the rest is loans. Whenever i need a new book or something i just put it on my student account and it will be covered by whatever source of funding you have.

$3000 in the form of pellgrants ? so you applied for fafsa way before you applied to keiser ? could you tell me how is the process ?

first you go to keiser

pay the application fee ? how much is it ? then you apply

you take the wonderlic test, right ? you get accepted then ?

then what ?

you apply for the nursing program ? take the teas and then the interview ? whats the cost of the teas ? im guessin you have to wait to see if u get accepted into the program before applying for financial aid or taking out/signing any loans, right ?

u are in the program, right ? I have read that one needs to have a 3.0 gpa to be accepted .. is this 3.0 gpa in all the general courses here

http://ksweb.keiseruniversity.edu/downloads/nursing_gened.pdf

or do u have to get 3.0 gpa only in general education, and not sciences ?

Yea you have it right... But i took the wonderlic back in 2008 which i passed with a good enough score to even be considered when i was fresh out of high school and there was no application fees due at that time (so i guess my wonderlic score from back then was still good to use)...so when i was ready to apply to the program after taking my prereqs at hcc i went back to apply and the application fees came to a total of $250 for the school and the nursing program together, then i took the teas which is free for the first time..if you have to retake any of the sections it's $25 per section. I passed the teas, then got set up for an interview and they called me that same day and told me i got in. And you don't necessarily have to wait to get accepted to do your fafsa, you can just fill it out and put in the school code or codes if you are considering different schools. in my case i had filled it out last year for 2010/2011 because i was still at my other school taking classes...keiser just went in and switched the school code for me and transferred my info. And that list you have of the courses is correct...i was told students need to maintain a 3.0 gpa to keep their spot in the nursing program to avoid losing their seat...if u happen to make a C or something it wont hurt you just make sure you have enough A's and B's in all classes on that list to weigh your gpa at 3.0 anything below a C needs to be repeated....i didnt take my gen. ed's there so i can't go into detail, that is just what they have told me. That's the order i went through the process in.

From what I understand, you have to have a cumulative gpa of 3.0. The app fee was $200; it is non-refundable. Your addmissions counselor will walk you through the paperwork part. Then you take the Wonderlic. It doesn't cost anything. You have to score at least 20, or you will need to retake it. It didn't seem that difficlt. Jsut basic quesions. I scored 22 the first time. You are not ccepted until after you pass the TEAS, which costs $50 the first time, and $25 for each section if you have to re-take any (you can take the TEAS two times in two weeks, but if you fail both times, you have to wait four months to try again), pass a background, get a release from your doc stating you can work in all the labs (like that you don't have any health condition that will interfere with you being able to complete your degree). Then you do the interview with the Director of Nursing or the Dean. Once all that is done, they will let you know if you have been accepted. Phew! That was a mouthful...lol.

I go Mondy morning to take the TEAS. OOOOBER nervous! I will be up @ 6 in the morning getting in the last bit of studying I can. Good luck, and I hope you love Keiser!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions ... you said you took your prereqs at hcc, what was your gpa in the prereqs ? Keiser says you need 3.0 cumulative gpa, so Im guessing they are referring to the prereqs I posted here (30 hours) ..

were you told that students have to maintain a 3.0 gpa while they are in the nursing program ? or just to be considered for the program ?

I have As and only a C on some of the prereqs, but I still have to take A & P 1 and 2, micro, English literature .. Im currently at Broward college taking some prereqs.

Some sections let you choose between to classes

For example, in the English section you need 3 credit hours and they let you choose between enc1101 or enc1102, if a person has a B in enc1101 and an A in 1102, do they take the higher grade ?

I also would like to know how was interview like? what do they ask you ? do they make you write anything ?

I have read that the Wonderlic test is not required, if one already has an associate degree of arts. You are saying that the first time, the TEAS costs $50 and if you dont get the required score on an specific section such as math for example, then you have to pay $25 to take that section again, right ? so basically you can take the TEAS three times before waiting 4 months ? sorry for all the questions, is just that English is my second language.

thank you for your help.

You can only take the TEAS TWO times in TWO weeks, and then you have to wait 4 months to take it again. By 2 times in 2 weeks, I mean, for example, if you pass math, reading, and language, but fail science, you can tetake the section you failed one more time within two weeks. IF you fail all of it, you can retake all of it one more time within two weeks. So, you only get 2 goes at it, then you must wait four months to make another attept.

And, I am in Tallahassee. The fee I have to pay at this Keiser may be different from what you have to pay at a different campus.

Hey Orlandoch! you are very welcome. I had a lot of questions during this process also. In my prereqs my gpa was only a 3.2 since their requirements were just a tad bit different, they did not look at my gen. psychology or lifespan grades which i got A's in both so my gpa dropped. But keiser on the other hand looked at both of those grades which brought me up to a 3.5. In the nursing program they told me we have to maintain a 2.5...But the prereqs should weigh out to at least a 3.0.. You seem to have good grades already so the gpa shouldn't be a problem just keep making those A's because that C most likely wont hurt you in the end. And about the english credits, thats a good question because i took 1 & 2 but 2 wasn't required for me at hcc i just took it so it will be out of the way when i go for a higher degree. Im thinking they would just take one of the two and pick the better grade..it makes more sense b/c they only look for 3 english credits. Oh and about the interview....I was SUPER nervous but it was nothing like i thought! The director of nursing was very nice and made me feel comfortable...she wanted to know my goals and if i was ready to put in the effort...she didn't even keep me long. It was a breeze! The only thing i had to do was put together a portfolio for her to look at (which she kept by the way). I included a letter of intent, a resume, unofficial transcripts, high school diploma, and 3 letters of recommendation...thats about all i had since i don't have any experience but she liked it. But if you have anymore questions ill be more than happy to help as much as possible
