Just looking for some people to talk to that are also applying to Northern Virginia Community College's traditional nursing program starting this fall. If there is anybody out there: have you taken or are you scheduled to take the entrance exam, and how many of the supporting courses have you finished or will finish before the program starts?

hi
i applied to nvcc's online accelerated nursing program. I am to hear from them this week. I have been accepted at a private school but i dont wanna go there cuz i dont feel like paying 25000 dollars. lol.. n e way, i took the hesi exam and did very well (or at least i think i did). i had an 88% overall. I also took the teas and scored 91st percentile for the private school. THe tests were not hard at all. It is all basic stuff. Its easy math, vocabulary, reading and language arts. very easy.. i had 1 day to study. I had registered two days prior to the day of the test. orientation for my program of interest is on april 24th, 2009 and so i am desperately just waiting a couple days to find out if im in or not. N e way, hope to hear from u soon..
o by the way, i have completed all my prerequisites and supporting course. i tested out of medical terminology so i dont have to take that class. I challenged a & p II cuz i had taken it but it was not transferring cuz i took it at an institution where i was on a quarter system and not on semester.

Hey there,
I was just accepted into the accelerated online nursing program. Thus far, I've completed all pre-req's, psych, humanaties and all other non NUR corses that are apart of the nursing curriculum. I applied last year and wasn't accepted, so I spent this whole year taking any classes I could that would alleviate my course load for when I DID get in. In the case that anyone reading this isn't accepted, don't fret; just apply again the following year and spend that time taking all the classes you can that are IN the nursing schedule so you aren't crazy stressed when you ARE accepted. Just for the record, I re-took Eng 111 to bring my "B" up to an "A" and re-took NAS 161 to bring my "C" up to an "A", giving me all A's across the board for my pre-req's with the exception of one B. Keep in mind, your pre-requsites are the ONLY thing they are taking into consideration when selecting the next generation of nursing students. Also, traditionally, the accelerated program only takes the top 15% of applicants, so I strongly suggest applying to BOTH programs; the accelerated AND traditional, which you will have to do seperately.
Hope this helps,
Anna
You guys are awesome. I am so proud and jealous of you both. RaNdHaWa'Z I am sure you will get in!
I had big hopes and dreams to apply to the online accelerated program but that was all destroyed by the lack of advisement by the MEC. So I didn't find out until it was too late that I needed to take CHM 101, which I am finishing up right now. So, I will be applying to the traditional program as soon as grades for Spring are out. I too have A's across the board (except for speech-B) for all the pre- and co-reqs, so far. I am taking HLT 141 and HLT 250 over the summer online and then nothing but NUR classes from there on out! I am so excited to apply. I got a 92% overall on the HESI.
Whatever you guys do, don't forget to apply for the scholarships that our school offers. I already got one for $1,500 last week and have an interview for another one on Monday! If I get both it will be for a total of $4,000. And I got one last year for $1,000. You both have good grades and I think they love us pre/nursing students. People are always complaining about money, but our school is always giving it away...don't pass up those opportunities.
Keep in touch! I want to know everything

Are you guys all Virginia residents? I've been trying to call Annette Fowler to ask her about the likelihood of a DC resident getting accepted to the accelerated online or in-person program, and I haven't been able to reach her. I can't fathom paying the kind of tuition Georgetown charges, even with their scholarship program.
DC resident,
Before I applied, I was a Maryland resident, and was going to have to pay the out of state tuition fee fire the first year of nursing school. HUGE differenece in price... but I wasn't accepted so I spent that next year establishing in state resusency and boosting my pre-requsites. I also even got HLT 141 and the humanaties elective our of the way. I just found out that I've been accepted for this years accelerated program and Im now an In state resident AND I'll have less of a coorifice load since I was able to spend that year taking supporting courses that are apart of the nursing curriculum.
Hope that helps!!!

I am now finally a resident. I think it is unfair that people in the immediate area should have to pay out-of-state, but that is the name of the game. I also think it is BS that I had to pay out-of-state tuition when I came back to the states after being stationed overseas in South Korea while I was in the Air Force...

Congratulations to you guys...you are where I want to be next year!!! I am new to posting on this site but wanted to give a little introduction. I am so excited to find others who are going to NVCC and in this program. I have decided to change careers (out-of-work marketing person since June 08) and become a nurse. Health care was always my first love from childhood. I started as a premed student and graduated with a BS in Psychology over 15 years ago. I have three small children (16m, 3 and 7). I am registered to attend NVCC starting this summer and have scheduled 16 credits - probably wayyyyyy too much - of prereqs (all online) so that I will only need to take the core nursing classes once I get into the program. I am planning on applying to the Accelerated Online Nursing program next year. I have so many questions I don't know where to start. Every other day I tell myself I shouldn't be attempting this (college, kids, etc) but now that I am older and know myself a little better I really feel that nursing is what I should have been doing all along.
I haven't taken the TEAS yet - I am extremely nervous about taking test again.
FutureNOVARN - you mentioned about scholarships - is their anyway I could send you a PM? I have spoken to the financial aid people and I am still waiting to here if I will get anything. I also think we are registered for some of the same online classes this summer.
Sorry for the long post but I got really excited when I found this string
16 credits this summer?! What the heck are you taking?
Seriously, if you already have a BS in Psychology you should only have to take NAS 161 & 162, HLT 141 and 250, and if you didn't take Algebra, Chemistry or Biology in high school you will have to do those as well. Other than that your BS should have met your general education requirements. You should try to space your classes out evenly over Summer Fall and next Spring. But save the non-pre-reqs for Spring '10 because the deadline for applications isn't until March 25th 2010. So you have to do the pre-reqs during Summer and Fall. You cannot take any pre-reqs during Spring 2010, only supporting courses.
If you haven't done so already send your transcripts to the MEC for evaluation.
Don't rush into taking the TEAS. Study first, and maybe put it off until you have finished your science pre-reqs, because those will help you out on the test. Most people seem to have problems with the science portion.
Sorry if I told you things you already knew. I just wanted to cover all the bases. And if you don't know already the
MEC advisors will not actually sit down with you and tell you what you need to take, you have to figure that out for yourself. So at any point if you ever get confused or are looking for answers, just send in a checklist (even if it is incomplete) and that will answer all of your questions. Or, ask a friend.
As far as the scholarships go, the deadlines have already passed so if you did apply you should have heard back about whether or not you got an interview by now. If you were just referring to the FAFSA you have a whole month before you will know anything. They will email and mail you everything regarding the FAFSA stuff.
I am mailing in my portfolio tomorrow!!!!!!!! Is anybody else applying...?
