Thank you! Your replies have been most helpful! I am not looking to travel long term, so I am not interested in the independent contractor thing. Just looking to work with a few agencies who are fairly ethical in hopes of gaining new experience, traveling the world, and banking some $$$!

"Wow your experience on the Marshall Islands sound amazing! :) Do you mind sharing some good agencies to work for?"

Really, I do not know of any 'good' agencies to work for.

They do their job which is trying to get you, the nurse to work for the least amount so that you do not eat up their profit/bill rate. They dangle bells and whistles in front of you (tax advantage, 'free housing,' etc).

But it comes down to what you need at the time, how much are they willing to negotiate and whether your recruiter (and the company) is ethical.

My recruiter for the Marshall Islands was ... great. She really worked to find me a position (in the middle of the Pacific Ocean LOL). But, she went to bat for me. Then, she quit, the company.

Realize, this is business. Most recruiters work on commission and they have a quota.

Really, really have your game together so that they want you ... they really want you. Better yet, so that they NEED YOU!

I work as an independent contractor. Which means, I do all my taxes, find my housing, am self-employed and negotiate my contracts ... with an agent. It is a lot of work, but mostly worth it.

I partnered with Mel Johnson at RVisions. He was my agent/partner in setting up and negotiating my contracts, with my specifications and input. Sometimes I deal directly with the client/facility.

This is not for newbies. You have to have a strong background in your specialty, an unquestionable reputation as an expert in your specialty, as well as be an experienced traveller. I have all three and then some.

A fellow traveler in Casper, Wyoming told me of Healthcareseekers.com. They got her an assignment in Northern Cali, Mary Splithe is the contact there.

Part and parcel of the process of travelling is finding a company that resonates with you. What works for me at any given time may not work for you. Know what you want, what is your bottom figure and is it going to move you forward in your career?

Maybe the money sucks at one assignment, but you will be working in a high acuity setting (gaining massive experience in a short period of time). If the place has a name and reputation, that goes in your resume.

Do not forget to get a letter of recommendation from the head nurse, or charge nurse or a fellow colleague.

Good Luck!

I'm a 29 yr old african american female. And all I have to say is "holla at ya girl". I went to Grambling and have 6.5 years of experience with specialties in ICU and Telemetry. I have been dying to go all over especially Cali for that time and a half after 8 hours. I already hold licenses in California and Texas and am so ready for the transition again. I traveled for 2 years alone very close to home because my father acted as if he was going to have a stroke at the very mention of me traveling alone. I have a good amount of experience but am needing a buddy for real though. I prefer someone with a Christian moral as I am a Christian.

I'm a 29 year old African American female and beyond ready to travel again but I need a buddy to capitalize on this money. Call me @ 504-234-8913

what company did you end up going with and do you like it?

I'm going to start traveling next month; This will be my first travel assignment! This thread hasn't been updated in a couple years but I still wanted to post! LOL!

I'm an African American Nurse who is looking to travel next February 2014 to be closer to my child. My first travel assignment will be in the Carolinas, then off to Texas and finally California. I have been a nurse almost 4 years with 3 years of ER experience in a Level I trauma center.

I am very scared to do this, I have been researching travel nursing for the last 6 months. I am already with an agency locally and will be traveling locally to get my feet wet.

I am going to give myself one year to see if I like it and if not, I'm coming back to my old job. I am also interested in meeting people who would like to travel together in similar areas.

I'm a AA female as well, looking to start traveling jn August. I reside in Texas but open to traveling almost anywhere. I'd like to travel either to Houston, Dallas or Cali. I have family in Atlanta and wouldn't mind traveling there either (although I hear the pay isn't the best in GA). Anyway, anyone interested in traveling around the same time, let me know!

I'm also a young AA nurse. I have been traveling non stop the past 2 years and recently decided to move back to Dallas to work on my Master's. Great places I've been are Dallas, Houston and the DMV. If anyone comes to Dallas hit me up!

Hello....

This is my first time responding to a post on this site, but after reading your posts, I felt motivated to get on here and connect with you ladies. I am an AA female and I too am hoping to take a travel assignment in Dallas, Tx this summer. (I also have family in Atlanta and wouldn't mind traveling there sometime in the near future.) My experience is in Pediatric ER in a Level 1 trauma center. I hope to hear from you guys soon.
