I was wondering if there were any young african american travel nurses and which assignement did u enjoy the most? On my first assignment and I'm not enjoying myself. I want to know the best places to go.

How old is young? I'm 33 and I've been travel nursing off and on since 2008. I've only had travel assignments in California and Illinois. I think the best place to do travel nursing is California. I LOVE nursing in California because they have the staffing ratios. I worked in Chicago and the ratios varied from hospital to hospital. I'm currently on assignment in Bakersfield, CA. There seems to be alot of work in this area but there's not much going on out here. L.A. is about a 2 hour drive. Vegas is about 3 hours. I think it just all comes down to what you're looking for. I'm not having the best time on my assignment either. I think I'm just lonely out here in the middle of nowhere.

Hey I'm 27yrs old and I'm also on my first travel assignment in Virginia and so far so good. I've meet other travels that say Virginia, California, and Texas and awesome places to go. I was having a hard time adjusting but I had to tell myself that this is a chance of a lifetime and I had to make the best of it!! Good luck with your travels!!! :yeah:

Awww I loved my Bakersfield assignment, although it would have much more to do with the people I worked with rather than the city. Lol.

To answer Chivon's question definitely California I loved, and Texas is also a favorite bc the people here are so friendly. My least favorite assignment was in South Florida, the people there were uh different to say the least with not enough pay going on either to deal with the b.s.

Hi Cali!

Are you still in Bakersfield and at what hospital? I'm thinking about taking a contract there for the end of this month or October.

I am a new nurse and also African American. I am interested in travel nursing and would like to know how many years experience you all had before you started traveling.

cuttiepie79, I just responded to your message.

ny0820, I had a little under 2 years experience when I started traveling. Please let me know if you have any questions. I've been traveling since 2008 and I've traveled with 3 different agencies. I had a different experience with each agency and it seems like I'm still learning as I go. I make sure I network with the travel nurses on my assignments because there may be a better deal out there.

Thanks for responding. I've only been a nurse since May, but I am so interested in traveling. Do you think a year is enough experience to begin traveling, or would you recommend me waiting until I get closer to 2 years or longer? Since you've been traveling for a few years you have hindsight.

I'm a young AA nurse myself, I'm planning on starting traveling in the spring which would put me at exactly two yrs ER experience. I'm wanting to go to/near Philadelphia for my first assignment.....do any of you have any experience in that area, or know anybody who have traveled there??

ny0820, In my opinion I think you should wait until you have at least 2 years experience. Hospitals will expect you to work independently. I think 2 years experience will give you the confidence to work with very little or no guidance. They don't want to have to train you to be a nurse, they want you to show up and hit the ground running. Usually, you're only going to get one or two days orientation on the unit. Also, each hospital may have different requirements when it comes to experience. I met a nurse who started traveling with 7 months experience. She felt comfortable though. She was actually a very good nurse, you would never think she had only been a nurse for such a short time. I've been an RN for 5 years and I was an LVN for 4 years before that and learning never ends. It seems as though I learn something new on every assignment. Traveling has been a great learning experience for me because every place does something new or different.

godbless-yute, Sorry I don't know anyone who's traveled to the Philly area. You have chosen a great field for travel nursing. Usually ER and ICU are in high demand. I've only worked Med-Surg and Telemetry. I feel like I need to learn something new to make me more marketable.
