Hi, I am an LPN (X 15 years). I guess I made a really stupid decision and signed a contract with RUE Ed. about 1 1/2 years ago for their study materials to become a RN through Excelsior College. Since then and after taking 4 of the Excelsior exams, my situation has changed and I have decided to persue my Associate Degree in Nursing through a local community college due to cost and other reasons associated with having to work full time and care for my mother whose health is failing quickly. I have almost all of the general ed. courses out of the way now after taking night classes and have applied for the 2007 Returning LPN to RN program and feel pretty good about getting in. I wrote RUE a letter asking them to release me from my contract as I have paid for all materials that I have received from them and would not be needing the remaining courses on the contract. I do not plan to order/use any more of their study guides, so I am basically paying for nothing. They offered to reduce my payment for 3 months, but would not release me from the contract. I cannot afford to continue paying them $99.00 a month for another 2 1/2 years for something that I cannot use. Does anyone have any suggestions as they will not send me anymore study guides unless I am actively testing (which I don't plan to do). If they would simply send them to me as I pay for them, I could resell them, but right now, they won't do that. I am really not sure what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Good morning!
Yes, I can understand 110% with what you are saying. I was suckered in myself, and have tried numerous times as well to be released from the contract; but they refused to budge. I have gotten quite angry; they could really care less about their clients and only truly care about making money. We have been ripped off so well! But, what I am thinking... technically, they did not "finance" these books, because they will not give you more books than you have paid for. (I have asked them that question straight up several months ago, when I requested more than one subject at once, and they refused saying that they will only send the books once we have paid for them...for example, under normal circumstances, they will not send you 3 subjects, if you've only paid $600 so far...they at most will send you two). So, because of this, it is not a typical LOAN situation. So, my thoughts are that it wouldn't adversely affect our credit if we broke our agreement. Rue is such a scam and I really want out! If you've received any advice or input on this situation, please do share (and I will do the same),
Thanks!!!!

Based on what you said in your posts, I would advise you to take this up with an attorney. This does not sound like a typical contract. I knew someone who prevailed in a legal battle over buying a house, so it is possible that you have a case. If nothing else, Rue might back off if you have an attorney send them a "lawyer letter" suggesting legal action.

I just stopped paying over 2 years ago and nothing has showed up on my credit report.
Thanks so much for the input. When you just stopped paying, did they send you threatening letters, etc. ? I don't see how they could put it on a credit report myself since it doesn't seem like a typical loan. I thought about contacting a lawyer, but not sure what type of lawyer would handle this and what type of fees that would incur. ???
They called a couple of times then completly stopped. Now I buy my guides on Ebay for alot less.
Did you notify them in writing or simply stop paying ? I just want to do this right, so I don't have a lot of hassle about it and I DEFINITELY don't want it on my credit report ! I just want out of this so badly !
Thanks..

hi all!
I know what you are saying but actually, if you made the mistake of buying your study systems from rue or college network and default they will come after you! my friend from lpn school signed a contract with college network back in 1994, and now 2007 they have a court order and will pursue not only what she owes but also court fees. be very caqreful, I think talking to a lawyer would be a great idea!
good luck
I did write them or called them. They didn't advance me any study guides. You pay as you go.

people....there is a huge difference between RUE and TCN. The College Network sends out all the study materials at one time. I mean when you buy a car, you get the whole car....they don't send you one tire at a time.
Plus, if ya'll didn't read what you were signing...how can you complain about it? I mean, you signed a loan.......if you bought a car and have monthly payments, you are obligated to make that payment. just because you decide one day that you don't want the car anymore doesn't mean that you can just take it back and expect your money back....or that you can just call them and say, "na, i changed my mind."
online education is something that you really have to think about...not only financially, but are you motivated to do this on your own. Some people are up to online study...some people need that teacher to tell them what to study, what to know and when to take a test. to each his own.
all i have to say is "read the contract before you sign anything" that way you can't blame anyone else.

I agree always read and research before you sign anything, it is just smart. I think alot of people get pressured or just cave in and say yes and get remorse later. This is why you should sleep on it for a few days when you sign anything or at least make an informed decision.
Hi, I know it's been a while since this was posted, but I wondered if you have had any luck with getting out of the "RUE" situation ? I haven't done anything yet and they are still charging $99 a month to my American Express account. I really need to talk to a lawyer soon. I just can't continue to pay this. I am in an actual seated RN program now (which is expensive itself) and am supposed to graduate in May '08. I so badly want to get rid of this RUE payment. I just wondered if you had found out anything.I just don't want my credit destroyed by these leaches ! :madface:Thanks.
