Hi everyone, I'm new to allnurses.com. I recently applied to VCU's accelerated MSN program. I KNOW I'M EARLY, BUT I'M VERY ANXIOUS. The deadline is nov 1st. We won't hear anything back till February. I just wanted to put something out here to see what people thought, who applied, and if they know anything about admission process. Any input and insight is welcomed. (amount of students accepted, gpa calculation, etc.)
That may be true. Who knows. I know "one person" in particular told me they recieve about 1500 applications b/w both programs. At first I thought that was nuts, until after I realized there are people from all over the country applying. Who knows how many of the applications are "valid" or if they would ever share a true number really. Regardless you have to know that you are competing with some fairly smart people with these types of programs. Regardless of the tuition hike 1) it is cheaper then going to a community college for 2 years then waiting a couple of more years to transition a ADN to a BSN. 2) The fact that you have a BSN from VCU does carry some name recognition. Who knows...I just hope we all get in and get the chance to realize what we have worked hard for up to this point.
The tuition hike seemed substantial to me. Moreso for the MSN program than for the BSN. AMSN students are charged graduate tuition from day 1 and are subjected to three semesters of overage fees for tuition bc the AMSN credit hours go above 15 per semester. If there is no tuition increase next year, that equates to roughly $7000 for tuition fall 2012 and $6500 tuition spring 2013. And that doesn't include the $90 per hour fee for clinicals. It doesn't appear the BSN goes over the max of 18 hours per semester. So it seems the ABSN will be about $13000 plus clinical fees for the first year whereas the AMSN would be about $20000 plus clinical fees for the first year.
Any ASBN applicants heard back yet? I too am anxiously waiting...my online application status hasn't changed either.
One of my friends from UVA (anthropology major) was accepted to the AMSN program, so I'm feeling slightly more hopeful about my liberal arts background!
Perhaps the total number of applicants you were given took into consideration the number of applications they don't consider "valid" b/c they don't meet basic standards. I know when I visited Marisa was totally flustered. Most of the people in our room didn't even have a Bachelor's degree. That made me feel a little better about the competition. :)
Nothing in my mailbox either. bummer. If something doesn't come tomorrow, that means the long wait until Tuesday b/c of the holiday. ugh!
Haha, tuition for me will be way more than the numbers up there since I'm an out-of-stater... Maybe that will make me more appealing since they will get more money from me hahaha...
But I hope that rumor is right about applicants being down!

I applied for the Accelerated BS program, my 2nd go around!! Last year, I was wait listed for the program and I am so excited to say that this year, I was accepted into the program! I really thought this day would never come because VCU is known for its' prestigious program, but if you work hard and show them that you really want to be apart of their program, you will get your chance! Hello everyone, I also got the exciting large envelope for the ABSN program. jmaddy1, I agree with you that VCU is a very prestigious program. I was so excited when I received my acceptance! I thought I'd share the news that kellyski has started a Facebook group for the "VCU ABSN Class of 2013." :)
I got my acceptance letter as well. It was dated Jan 13th, but my mom didn't tell me about it (I sent it home and I live out of state). Anyways, it's my second choice and I am very excited!
does anyone know about how much the amsn program is (out of state) for adult nurse practitioners? I keep trying to figure out costs for all the grad schools to which i applied, since that will be a BIG deciding factor.
There's a tuition calculator on vcu's website. If you google "vcu tuition calculator" you can find it on the website. It's expensive for out of state. Last year's tuition was $9,388.50 per semester plus $818 university fee, $34 tech fee, $95 health fee and $288 capital outlay fee per semester. That's almost $11k per semester, which would be $33k per year since the pgm is year round. Also, it's unclear if the amsn gets charged overage fees for going above 15 credits per semester. I know the sample course schedule has the fall1 at 18 hours, Spr2 and summer2 both at 17 hours. The overage fee is $1,043 per credit hour over.
