Any VCU AMSN/ABSN Summer 2012 Hopefuls?

Hi everyone, I'm new to allnurses.com. I recently applied to VCU's accelerated MSN program. I KNOW I'M EARLY, BUT I'M VERY ANXIOUS. The deadline is nov 1st. We won't hear anything back till February. I just wanted to put something out here to see what people thought, who applied, and if they know anything about admission process. Any input and insight is welcomed. (amount of students accepted, gpa calculation, etc.)

Talk to you soon,

You sound like a great applicant sas4vv! Don't beat yourself up and think positively! The waiting is going to be long though EEK

Did anyone else get a confirmation of their application as of yet?

sas4vv you sound like a great candidate. I am currently finishing my A&P courses...who knows and the MarwaT...you are right, the wait is going to be horrible for me. I have NO patience. Thankfully the holidays will keep me crazy busy.

I received confirmation of my application Sept 29th to be exact. About 2 weeks after it was showing as received on the website. I feel like I have already been waiting forever. :)

Hey Marwa T,

I haven't received an official confirmation just yet. Weird because I applied way back in August, but I'm not worried. It's sort of a long story.

I received several emails from the office of enrollment. The first one was an email saying they needed a few more items, which the grad school had already received. The second email from the school of nursing stated that they received everything except my test scores and once they receive them, my application would be complete. Because I took the new GRE, my scores weren't be available until November 10th.

So I emailed and called them yesterday to let them know about my results, and they said as long as it's listed on the place where you check your results, you are o.k. (My application states complete and ready for review.) They also emailed me promptly to tell me that they would email when my application is complete.

So the moral to the story is that as long as you had everything before the deadline, AND it is stated as being received with a date, you should be o.k.

My dates listed for my application items are August 23rd, so I also feel like I have been waiting forever!!!!!!!!!!

February can't get here fast enough. Either way, I just want to know so that I can continue on my journey.

MarwaT...I completely agree with mas28 and I should have clarified. I received email confirmation, but then I was also asked for additional material after my initial application was completed. Two of my references had a hard time putting my information in correctly. The fact that my last name almost contains every letter of the alphabet would have nothing to do with that...LOL. I think I received confirmation b/c of that. If you had no additional issues and the website shows everything in and it is ready for review, you are good. I will also say that when I first inquired about this program I wasn't ready b/c I had some work to do on prerequisites, but I had the feeling had I been ready they would have accepted my application even after the deadline...to a point. In other words they hit me has being very friendly and accommodating when at all possible. They may give a few extra points for being on time, but I don't think you get counted out for sliding into base last minute either. :) Good Luck!

I am stay at home with my children right now, but was offered a job part time and can make my own hours working from home. This person also knows I want into this program and is a VCU graduate themselves, so they have an idea. They are more than willing to work with me after the program starts as well. I warned them I may only be good for 10-15 hours a week and they are fine with that. If nothing else the part-time work will pay for books. :) I really hope I get in...b/c the pieces I really need to fall into place just seem to be.

Thanks so much for the responses! I did get an automated email confirmation so I am satisfied. Now it's just the waiting! Boy..is it tough.

Phew, Finally got an official complete application email. Now I can sort of relax but not really. This is killing me!! My stomach is in knots.

Happy waiting everyone!

Hi there!

I have also applied for the AMSN program and I am extremely excited. However, I have recently developed some reservations about the program. I applied for the Women's Health concentration but after much review it seems that there is a tough job market out there for WHNPs. Therefore, I am considering the FNP track instead but I am not sure if VCU allows a concentration change after the application submission since this is an accelerated program. Does VCU's SON allow changes and if so what is the process?

Thanks in advance! :)

Welcome BajanAli,

Nole is probably the only person who can give you even a close answer to your question regarding switching. (She is still in the program or just graduated the ABSN route. She's been a wonderful wealth of knowledge for us. Hopefully she will see this post soon and respond to your answer!) I understand where you are coming from with the switch though. I applied to the FNP track because there seems to be a lot of job opportunities and I didn't want to be in another restrictive field. I know so many FNP's who work across the broad spectrum of advanced practice. I do remember reading something on the old VCU SON website before they revamped it about a possible switch. My best advice to you is once you get accepted, (fingers crossed!) immediately talk to your adviser or counselor about switching into the FNP. I think this would be the easiest way. That way you haven't really been pulled to far in the WHNP direction/specialization. At this point, we all are just trying to get our foot in the door. I do know they accept between 20-30 AMSN students from past posts and information sessions. So hopefully, they don't have to have a certain number of FNPs, ACNP's, WHNP's etc. I really don't think switching should be an issue, especially if you do it as early as possible.

Plus it would be great to have someone to go through the entire program with start to finish because we both are on the FNP track! (If we get in! Lord Willing!)

Anyway, we don't have that much longer. Welcome to the wait. I hope and pray you and everyone else on this blog gets in!!! Countdown continues!!!!!

Good Luck,

Mas28
