Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

Hey for those of you who already got into the MEPN class of 2008, can you please tell us poor alternate-listers when UCSF told you guys you have to make a decision/send in the deposit by? They told us that it "could be as late as June 16th" before they tell us whether or not we get in. i was wondering if that's because the deposit/decision date for those who got in is shortly before that? Anyone want to have mercy on me and tell me when UCSF's decision date is please?

And for those of you who did get in and are going, will someone please reaffirm why they want to go to UCSF? I really do still want to go, but in the light of being waitlisted, I want to be reminded of why UCSF is so great, besides it's obvious reputation and because everyone says so? why are you guys going?

Any replies would be MOST helpful!!! Please help! Thanks in advance! i really appreciate it!

We were supposed to email the nursing school by March 14th and let the graduate school know by March 15th (not postmark date, but reply date). That's one thing that annoyed me. I didn't get my letter until March 7th, and I had to decide within a week. Due to the bureaucracy that UCSF seems to have to go through, I would give yourself a couple of weeks before you expect to hear something. I have a friend who was waitlisted for the FNP program and she heard 2 weeks before classes started that she was getting in. She packed up her life and moved across the country and is very happy with the program.

thank you so much birthrevolution! I really appreciate it! Congrats on getting in! I wonder why it takes so long for them to get back to us if all the replies are in last week already...thank you!

Maybe we can all have another get-together in early June, before orientation (when all of us from out of town have moved)?

NightNuse, I think we might have met. Are you from Alabama? I haven't been working in the field of community health, though I am very dedicated to working in community health and international nursing in the future. I don't really have any clinical experience either. I once worked as an Activity Director in an Assisted Living facility. I designed educational, social and physical activities for elderly adults and adults with brain trauma. Most of the residents suffered from depression and/or dementia, and my job was basically to monitor people's mental health/happiness. When I told my faulty interviewer that I didn't have any nursing experience, she was quick to say that my job in the Assisted Living facility was nursing experience. This makes me think that UCSF takes many different experiences into consideration.

Hi everyone! I am dancing....because the school of nursing called me this morning and I am in! I am so thrilled and so appreciative that they called me so soon after receiving replies from folks in my specialty. I hope more good phone calls find your wires, fellow alternates.

Wonderful! Congratulations! I'm so glad it worked out for you! Best of luck!:yeah:

Thanks birthrevolution! And thank you for your openness, hopefully our paths will cross at some point. I wish you the best as well!

Congrats sheilanagig! I have a question, which phone number did they call of yours, is it your permanent address or cell phone or work? How do they know which number to call? I want to be available and there when they call!

Hemicoffee, they called my cell. good luck, I will send out some positive vibes...the number came up anonymous

Hey hemicoffee- I was a MEPN alternate for the last two years in Gerontology, and here's how I understand it: if you said you want to be an alternate and you don't get notified relatively soon after the reply date for accepted applicants, it likely means there are currently no spaces in your specialty. However, if one of the accepted folks who replied by the 3/15 deadline has a change of heart or circumstances and withdraws anytime up until the first day of classes (likely 6/23 this year), you could still get the call. I didn't get official "rejection" letters from UCSF until after classes started in late June both years I was an alternate. (And now, with my 3rd application as an ever-improving candidate, I'm in!!) Waiting with the knowledge that you may not know for months is hard, I know! Hope you hear good news soon- best of luck!

hey hemicoffee and other mepn alternates,

bluedreamofsky's description of the process sounds right-on to me. last year, i was placed as a #2 alternate to my specialty (peds np) when i applied to the program. the wait from march until june was really tough and, by the end of march, i would have gladly traded my limbo state for a flat-out rejection from ucsf. however, i had to wait until late june for my official rejection. a friend of mine, also placed as a 2nd alternate to her specialty (achin), was offered a spot in the program around mid-april. you can never know how things will work out-- so stay strong and remember that the fact that you made it this far in this crazy process is a massive achievement in and of itself. good luck to you!

ps: i'm a 3rd time mepn applicant and was finally accepted this year (!!!). looking forward to meeting my future classmates in june!

They asked for a signed intent to register by March 15th. They have not yet asked for money.

I suspect that it may be as late as June 16th because some folks may want to attend but cannot do so at the last minute.

UCSF was my first choice because it is down the road from me, is of high quality, is a major research institution (I am interested in an academic career), and it is a public university.
