Any student that you just don't like?

I feel bad saying it, but there is a student who comes in for a daily med that I just. don't. like. She doesn't have much in the way of social skills (doesn't greet me, pushes past other students). Not in a mean spirited way, but I think she may fall onto the really high functioning autism spectrum, maybe asperger's. Also, she eats a snack with her medication everyday to avoid nausea and she crunches so loudly and talks with her mouth full of food, no matter how many times I gently remind her to please finish before talking.

Maybe it's that (if she does fall on the spectrum) she is so high functioning that at her age (6th grade) she should have mastered many of these social skills.

In any case, I don't like that I don't enjoy her daily visit to my office... but I honestly don't.

Yep- I thought the same thing with my student- that he might be a sociopath or psychopath. I saw him a bunch of times for hand injuries from punching walls, so I knew he had the potential to be violent. Luckily, he graduated.

I haven't seen this student be violent, but still only in 5th grade. It's just and immediate and overwhelming sense of unease when I see this kid-- like I want to stay on his good side in case he does get violent.

Oh gosh yes! One year this girl would come in every day to take her medicine and thought it would be fun to play hide n seek every.single.day!! I wouldn't even play along or look for her because she wasn't really hidden well. It didn't matter how many times I told her not to or she got in trouble by the principal or teacher-she just couldn't help herself. Such an ordeal for one pill-I dreaded her visits! There's always some I just don't like and I can never explain it because there are others that may do the exact same thing that doesn't bother me (although never found another hider). I always treat them kindly and wish them on their way as quickly as possible!

Oh, that sounds so annoying!! I had a similar thing a couple years ago where one day a student accidentally snuck up on me and I jumped (I startle very easily) and thought it was hilarious... so everyday he would try to sneak up on me. It got old real quick.

I had 2 diabetic 10 year olds at the same time one year. One particularly nasty. Rolled her eyes, dramatic sighs, back talked, wouldn't do what I asked, etc. Turned a 5 minute procedure into a 10 minute painful ordeal. Every single day. I even asked the guidance counselor what I could do to get along with child, and at least show me some respect. Counselor said, yup I know her and you're stuck - it's her she's just got a b****y personality. The second girl was OK, but would follow along sometimes. In the meantime, I also had 2 diabetic boys, and they were in and out in minutes with no problems. I really dreaded lunch and the times these two came in. I was SO GLAD when they went on to middle school!!!

Yes!

We have several that are just plain annoying. We have one girl who must say absolutely everything with a whiny sing song voice. It's like nails on a chalkboard. And once when she was sick and dad had to pick her up we could tell that he was totally annoyed by her too. Can't blame him really.

And sometimes it is the parents. Some of them come running for any slight little think. And the kids know it and they totally play it. Of course they do! They aren't stupid.

And I just want to add that I am the parent of a high functioning autistic. He does everything y'all described: chews loudly, argues excessively (just for the fun of it?), questions everything and has rude and awkward behaviors. He's annoying. He is my own son and I love him with my life but gosh he is annoying.

So.... yup. Don't feel bad.

Yes. There are students that I just do not like. I feel terrible about it, because they are just little kids, what's not to like?? But it's the truth... I take good care of them, and treat them nicely, but I do an inward eye-roll when they come in.
