Hi! I am about to take my first pre-nursing class (just one to start) in the fall. I already have a degree in something else, but it's been 10 years since I got out of college. I just need to take some pre-req's to qualify for nursing school. I would love to hear from other SAHM's of small children and know how you manage your class/study time, the kids and housework. Can you share your schedules with me? Is it possible to take more than one class per semester without the use of babysitters? Thanks!
Just go for it. I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old. I;m taking my last class, I'm applying in september for the PROGRAM!!!! its been a year and a half since I started taking the prereqs and I'm done in three weeks. I started with one class and the las two semesters I took two but one on saturdays. You can handle it just study at night, enjoy your kids during the day and try to rest the time you'll have to sleep. Don't get stressed because then your'e not going to enjoy the classes and your family. Then is not worth!!!. The most diffivult paret is to start with the first class to get on with the fear and anxiety, once you're there is like a drug, you can't stop!!!! I also have a BS ten years ago :) trust in you and you'll succeed!!!!
I am a SAHM to 3 little ones. (4yrs, 2yrs, and 4mths) I will start my pre-reqs this fall. I am so glad I found this thread! Sometimes I wonder if I am crazy for thinking I can go to school and raise 3 young children all at once.
But reading all the stories shows me it can be done!!
Good luck to all!

hi,
i am a sahm of two, ages 3 and 1.5. i began my pre-req's with only one child. at the time i started with two classes the first semester( and easy class and a hard science)and then moved to three classes the next semester(english, psychology, and micro). during my second semester, i was blessed and became pregnant :kiss . i took the summer off and the fall semster, delivered in november, and was back to school in the winter taking two classes. while i was in school, my hubby who was also a student kept the little ones for me.
i was almost finished and only had one more pre-req before i was ready to apply to university of michigan. then hubby graduated and got a job out of state, so the family moved and i had to wait a year for residency. once i got everthing evaluated for the new school i discovered i needed to redo a&p and micro. also, with their crazy admissions precedures they give preference to students who complete the majority of their course work in their school system. therefore i need to complete about 15 or more credits at their instituition before applying.
in the fall, i plan on taking 9 credits, three classes, and in the spring 8 credits. however i found out that for the 2007-2008 school year they are changing admissions policy and i may have to take an additional class.:angryfire
my advice is to take classes at a good pace for you. insuring that you will be able to take of yourself and your family without getting burned out. also, strive for the highest grades possible because this is an ultra competitve environment. i found scheduling is a very important part of academic success. for example, if your not an early morning person, don't make a schedule that starts at 7am. if your not good in math, don't take other demanding classes during that semester focus on the weakness. also, for the hard science classes like a&p and micro take them with maybe only one other less demanding class so that you can focus your time.
sorry to be so long winded. good luck with your education. lastly, take good care of yourself.

Well, I was a SAHM until about 3 weeks ago. My DH was laid off and I have gone back to work, while he is staying home with our kids (daughter is almost 3 and son is 11 months.) I have taken only one or two classes a semester, but I have done the one's that are early in the morning so I would be home by 9 am so my hubby could go to work (when he was working), I also took a night class that was one night a week.
I am taking this summer off and will start up again in the fall probably taking two classes. When I was at home, I would try to get as much of my homework done while the kids were asleep, and when my husband got home I would lock myself in the room or stay up late to finish.
My advice, is to try not to procrastinate too much.
I started my prereqs when my kids were 1 & 4. My youngest will be going to school full time this fall (finally) and I will start my ADN program this fall. I took all my classes only one or two per semester, depending on degree of difficulty. I really think you should shoot for A's and settle for a couple of B's. I took a couple of online classes, but really enjoyed getting away to class. At my school I found online classes to be more expensive and more involved. Just take it one semester at a time. You might need a sitter this semester and be okay w/out one next semester. As a SAHM I volunteer for a lot of things (after all I don't won't work and I have all this free time)so if you can't say no like me...learn to say no. Your schoolwork is your new job. Not volunteering for things will take a lot of stress out of the equation and make school and family time more enjoyable. Good luck! It's a lot of fun and you will be so proud of yourself!!!
Glad to see a post like this one. What about working mom's though? I work Monday-Thursday and I'm going to start pre-reqs in the fall. My girls, age 3 and 4, are in preschool, but only while I'm working. So when I have a day off, they are home. I dont know how I will manage working 36 hours a week, school, kids, house, and other responsibilities. I'm considering putting off school for a year, which makes me sad, but I dont know if my family is ready.
My family lives out of the area so my husband and I are pretty much on our own as far as help with the kids and we live in a two bedroom apartment, not much room to "get away" from everyone to study. Fortunately, the college I am going to is literally only two minutes away from my house so I can study there, but I know I will be giving up precious time with my kids and husband.
I was wondering though... does anyone know if it's possible to get grants to do online classes? And... if you go to school only one class a semester, is that enough to qualify for the California BOG grant that waives the tuition? I know I can ask someone at the college, by my appt with them isn't for another couple of weeks.

I don't know about the Cali thing, but, my federal grants covered my online class just as they would my regular classes. At my college an online class is exactly like a regular class except online. It shows up the same on your transcripts and qualifies for the same scholarships, loans, and grants. I hope this helps.
It would be very hard to work full time, have kids so young, and go to school. I have seen it done though. If you have a supportive husband and only take one class at a time I definitely think it could be done. Instead on waiting a whole year to start, you could start getting some of the easier classes out of the way now, and start the harder science courses later after the kids are in school.
Whatever you decide good luck!
Oh, I am so happy to see this thread!
I am currently, until next week, a SAHM to 3 little boys (5 (will be 6 next month), 3 1/2, and 1 (will be 2 in August). I am returning to work next week but my company is allowing me to work part-time from the end of August on so I'll be a part-time student / part-time working mom. My husband is also in the military and is always deployed. I have a degree in Athletic Training but have to retake my science courses because it has been too long, which is a huge disappointment.
I finished up my pre-reqs to take my... pre-reqs... I took them online and a lab course once a week (my husband stayed home with the kids). Next semester I'll take about 5 classes, most of them online, with only one of them meeting on campus.
There are some times where I struggled with going back to school, mostly because I've already done it so going through the whole process over again is tiring and I just want to get started on the degree. But since I have the kids, work, and my husband deployed, I'll just take it one step at a time.
Currently I'm hoping to start applying to schools for the Fall 2008 semester but we'll see how that goes!
Hi there..... I'm a SAHM to a 6, 3, and 1yr old.... I could have written your post! I've been out of college for 10 yrs, I have my BS in another field, and I'm starting my pre-reqs this fall. I'm taking Anatomy first and then probably a Chem in the Spring (maybe Physiology too if I feel crazy enough to try two), glad you are here! Welcome and good luck!!!

I did all of my pre-req's online through www.iowacconline.com and www.ccconline.com
I did the work at night when the kids were asleep. No class, no commute except to my desk. Something about taking a final in your underwear - and it is not a nightmare!
