Hi! I am about to take my first pre-nursing class (just one to start) in the fall. I already have a degree in something else, but it's been 10 years since I got out of college. I just need to take some pre-req's to qualify for nursing school. I would love to hear from other SAHM's of small children and know how you manage your class/study time, the kids and housework. Can you share your schedules with me? Is it possible to take more than one class per semester without the use of babysitters? Thanks!
Yay! Congrats to all you moms working hard in so many ways!
I am a mom of 3 - 14, 12 and 4 years. I have been doing daycare in my home and taking one prerequisite at a time - online whenever possible. I have 2 courses to go and I hope to be starting nursing school in Sept/07 when my youngest enters first grade, so that takes care of child care expenses :)
This is a lot of work but I'm so excited! I've read posts here and elsewhere that tell success stories of second careers and parents going back to school. It's all very inspiring and I am convinced that if you want it you will succeed!!!!

33 year old SAHM here to a 10 year old and 4 year old. The plan has been to take 1 class a semester to keep our expenses down and my GPA up. When little one is in preschool this fall, I will work 30 hours a week and take 1 online class in the fall and in the spring. Then in the fall of 2007 when little one goes to kindergarten, thats when I will go on campus for the first time for A&P I....may or may not keep working while taking A&P..if I do, it will be a very part time job. EVERYONE has told me not to work or take any other classes with A&P. In May 2010 I will graduate...I figure the next 3.5 years are gonna fly by anyway, why not be a nurse at the end of all of it? And to those contemplating whether to start their nursing pre-req journey, I advise you to take it slow and keep that GPA up. That way you will have time for family and for school and shortchange neither. DONT RUSH unless you need to....your credits won't expire! Also, I take things that require papers like English 111 and Psych/Soc in the winter when I am inside more and feel like devoting more time to those things instead of wanting to be outside in the weather when its nice!

Sorry to nitpick, but here in BC (don't know about elsewhere) your science prerequisites have to be taken within 5 years! I've been chipping away for so long now, I'm starting one Biology for the 3rd time and one Chem for the 2nd! LOL
Might be something to think about when planning the timeline of your classes.

I am also a SAHM (as it looks like many others :) ) and I would take a max of 2 classes per semester. If you have a NET requirement (nursing entrance test), this test along with some other pre-req's like English, Psych and Math should get you on the waiting list and then take the other pre-req's / co-req's while waiting to get in. To ensure success complete all these classes before starting program cuz as I've heard and read, the program is very demanding and you do not want to worry about other classes. Also, talk to a counselor and make a gameplan for success.
Time mgmt. will be the key, study after the kids go to sleep, have your hubby p/u slack and have faith. U can do it!
Good luck!
