Any psych nurses out there?

I already posted this in the psych nursing forum, so please don't move it there. I posted here also because I really need some help quickly.

I am currently separated from my husband and I swear he has some kind of personality disorder.

I have been to two counselors, the first of which we went to see together. The first counselor advised we split up. The second one I went to by myself the first visit and she told me I should leave him because it sounded like he had antisocial disorder or borderline personality disorder.

I have to wholeheartedly agree. I was reading over different disorders, and the traits they listed explains SO much.

What I'm confused on is the fact that ALL the disorders seem to fit him, including histrionic and narcissistic. So how can you tell?

The real problem is, how can such a compulsive liar, con artist, and manipulator raise children?

He has already called the children names and neglected them.

Once, he left them with his female roommate and disappeared for three days after threatening to commit suicide. He actually DID slit his wrists in the past.

Another time, he asked to ride to the city where I was doing some volunteering and he proceeds to take the car, drop off the kids at his mom's, and then went to go have sex with another woman!!

He has NO conscience and he refuses to acknowledge that he has hurt me.

This is no where near a complete list of things he has done to me and the kids.

Am I right for wanting the court to order supervised visits only or am I being paranoid?

I am not a psych nurse, but I do have some common sense. As far is what is wrong with him, a psychiatrist can figure that out. Use your good common sense, I would not want this man around me. If you ask for supervised visits and he fights than ask for a psych eval.

you need to protect your kids.

Good luck and God Bless.

Thank you, I'm trying to do that.

I'm in the process of gathering info to present myself in court during my divorce. All I want is for my kids to be safe and I think supervised visits would be best.

supervised, yes

if he has already tried to harm himself, are the children safe with him?

I don't think they are. He only acts this way when I try to leave him.

would he abduct them and leave the area with them?

do you have photos of them in case you need to notify the police?

would he feel desperate, and harm them along with himself?

when he is with them, how is the time spent, where do they tend to go?

i do not think this board was for this type of question and is not serving you well by going by the opinion of persons you do not know.

personality disorders are a difficult lot and can only be diagnosed by a person who has extensive expirience in doing so. this is not the place. anyone offering a professional opinion on a patient /person not seen or evaluated and a one sided spouses opinion are putting themselves at risk for legal reprecussions.

here is a book and a link i have found helpful in my professional and personal expirience with borderlines and those who i "thought" were.

i strongly encourage you to seek an attorney for guidence and a therapist to deal with your trauma and pain of dealing with such a person.

well, i said he has some kind of personality disorder, i'm not sure which one since he seems to have traits from all of them. and i am asking if i should be worried about him around my kids. i did get this diagnosis from a psychologist and since he lies, there is no way to really diagnose him based solely on interviews with him. his family knows he is not all there in the head and i know it. i have been to counseling after dealing with him and i am only here for support. people come here all the time for marital problems if you hadn't noticed, so if you feel like there is something wrong here, please don't read my posts.

I am very sorry that you are having such difficulties. However, getting psychiatric advice from the internet isn't probably the most effective means. I would definitely continue with your own counseling and follow the advice of your lawyer. Good luck.
