okay i'm a Pre-Nursing student and i work full time at the moment to support myself in life.
i'm taking my general ed and pre req courses at the moment. i'm only taking 2 classes at the moment because i'm scared if i take any more courses i will get bad grades but to be honest i want to take more than 2 classes per semster. i have a good work schedule (4am-12:30pm) to take more than 2 classes. I want to complete my nursing degree as soon as possible. i know porbably a year from now i will probably quit working full time and work part time or some sort once i get in a nursing program but at the moment i have to work full time.
Are you or do you know anyone that works full time through Pre-nursing courses or even nursing school? Do they go to school full time also? or just part time?
is it possible to make it?
To everyone who's working full-time and also taking more than one class per term, that's some dedication and definitely deserves some applaud, especially those of you who have yound ones as well. If you don't mind me asking, what types of professions/jobs do you have? Have been thinking about this topic as well. I work at a rather fast paced consulting firm, which most of the time is mentally demanding and therefore can be mentally draining as well. I'd ideally would like to take at least two pre-req classes per semester while working FT, but am afraid it might be too mentally draining and cause me to do poorly at both work and school!
I work full time and do school part time. I am not sure how others can do even 40 hours per week and a full load of credits. Yikes. I'm exhausted when I get home at night (my job is crazy demanding right now) and can't imagine having to study/ read for more than one class per semester. I have 5 more to go....oh well! I'm thinking more could be done, but I would be miserable and not getting A's!
Jwrands-----I personally believe that slow and steady wins the race. What's the point of cramming classes in if you have a draining job and not alot of time? I'd rather go just a little slower and get the A's. I took one class last semester and now another this spring. I got an A and have an A so far in this new class. If I dare to think about what it would be like taking both of those classes together, I am positive my grades would not be as good, my family would be cranky, and my job would certainly suffer. Just my opinion. I may do two classes over the summer since my job slows down from May to September, but I really have to think about it!
The nursing program co-ordinators at the school I applied to strongly recommend against working full time while in the nursing program. They told us that 15hrs a week max is do-able but recommend not working at all if possible. I am taking microbiology in college right now and 3 online classes and have a 18 month old to take care of by myself because my husband is in Afghanistan. I am 2 weeks ahead in all 3 online classes and am wishing I took at least one more. The only time I do schoolwork is when my son is sleeping. When I start the nursing program (hopefully) in the fall I will not be working. I want to do as well as possible and I don't think working would be a smart choice. If I didn't have a child, I would consider pat time work while in school.
Think most jobs will take over your life if you let them. Since starting classes (I only do 1 per semester since I have a young son) I've learned to:
- Plan classes so they coordinate with work schedule. I take all the tough ones in the spring when work schedule is less crazy than other times of year.
- Take a lunch every day (I review class material at least once or twice a week and don't have to cram for tests; when I've taken online classes I use my work lunch to keep up with homework and posting assignments)
- Use Dummies books (like Chemistry for Dummies) from the library to help you grasp course material quickly. Saves a lot of time over slogging through textbook.
- Attend class every time it meets (even if it means leaving work at 5pm and things are crazy)
- Do every class assignment, especially extra credit. Most teachers want to give you a good grade if you are trying to do well.
- Take a personal/vacation day when you have a big assignment or tests you need to study extra for
- Stay at school for the whole class period (my family doesn't expect me home until 8pm on class nights, so even on nights when class ends early I stay on campus and review notes, do assignments, etc.)
- Ask my husband for help. Me taking classes means everyone in my family has to help out more. I appreciate this so much and it makes me want to do a good job in the class so I don't diminish the sacrifices we're all making.

Hi, I'm currently working two part time jobs, raising a 15 month old child, and taking 4 classes this semester. I'm taking A&P1, English 101, Psychology, and Math 017. I think it's completely doable if you're willing to do it. I am determined to do well and not let anything or anyone stop me. Luckily even though my son's father and I aren't together he accomadates my schedule so we share our son lol I get him the first half of the week when I have less class and work. He then takes him for me the second half of the week when I work longer shifts and take more classes in one day. In order to give myself flexibility I am taking one online class which is my English course. You just have to find what works for you and get into a rythym. With the help of my family and my son's father I'm able to do what I need to do. I hope this helps :-)
