I lost 42lb last year after having my 2nd baby, then left off the Atkins diet for a while and in 6 months put 7lb on!!

I have been back on the Atkins for 10 days now and lost that 7lb now and want to lose another 7lb at least..:)

please be careful! A friend of mine now has heart damage, aortic insuffiency, from the low carb diet. She is a lovely gal of 39. she may need surgery. The local cardiologists are seeing so many with increased cholesterol levels from this dieting. There is no quick fix & no 2 people are the same. Your body will take what it needs from places you may not want it to. Remember prudence. & also remember that when you go off the low carb diet the weight comes back! Only 2% keep it off. I just attended a lecture yesterday given by our dietician on this same thing. The best bet is decrease portions & increase activity. BE SAFE, you only have one YOU!

I am surprised at how much wrong info and beliefs are out there still in medical people. The low carb diets have been proven medically to be HEALTHIER for a person than a traditonal diet. It reduces your cholesterol not raises it. People still are in the old mind set of what was taught despite new medical proof. Our knowledge is improving everyday, our thoughts are still in the dark ages.

I am sorry about your friend but ask her if she took any type of diet pills like xenadrine or ephedra. I think the answer might surprise you.

I owe it all to the intestinal parasite I aquired 2 weeks ago! :D Want some?

no, my friend didn't use stimulants, or other OTC treatments....it was the lack of carbs in her diet. Please don't patronize me. I am a university educator, Board Certified in CV & have several other certifications. I am just trying to warm people about "fad" dieting, which is what this is.

Finally a thread I can sink my teeth into. I did low carb, when low carb wasn't cool.

I have been following the Atkins "way of life" since October 2000. I say way of life because I learned better eating habits that I have been able to maintain.

In Sept. 2000, six weeks after delivering my daughter, I weighed 276. I was developing painful knee problems. My BP was borderling high 140/90. My blood sugar was running around 120. My cholesterol was 260. I was fat and miserable. It wasn't just baby weight either. Prior to getting pregnant I weighed 260 and had been there for about 2 years

I read the entire "Atkins New Diet Revolution" before starting. Ten months later, in August 2001, I weighed 170. I lost 106 pounds!! My BP was 110/70 consistantly. My blood glucose was very even, running between 65-70. My cholesterol was 130. And my knees no longer hurt at all.

I have kept the weight off for over 2 years now. Low-carb was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was drinking Dr. Pepper like it was going out of style and eating fast food at least 4 times a week. My carbs now come from vegatables and I love all the low carb bars out now. They all tasted like crap 3 years ago.

Exercise now plays an important role in my life, but I didn't start exercising until my weight got under 200.

I don't think low-carb is for everyone, but I think it may have saved me. I was miserable mentally and physically, and now......I look MARVELOUS!!!!

I'm 32, 5'8", 165 pounds, and frankly, i'm HOT!!!! hehehe:chuckle :roll :chuckle

Well as has been stated, low carb isn't for everyone. i'd really be interested to know her history to see if there are other underlying factors. I agree your body will take what it needs when it needs it, but nobody NEEDS complex carbs. I think if we have learned anything from low carb dieting is its been around for a LONG time and is NOT a fad diet like some believe, and that nobody needs enriched flour, high fructose corn syrup, and all the other "nasties" this WOE has you avoid. I also disagree that only 2% keep it off. I've read SO many studies, research analysis, etc...that are saying that those who are TRULY low carbing, do it for LIFE, not just to shed a few pounds. And if you look at other diets like Weight Watchers, they have just as many returning dieters as other diets do too. Its all about lifestyle change, not just in the moment to get thin. I've NEVER met a dietician who agrees with low carb dieting, they all are VERY against it. I still don't get why, because the human body is different for everyone. It works for some, not the others. I know for me, and plenty of others that just because the portion is smaller, isn't a good thing. Aren't you still depriving yourself???

Just my .02, and i hope your friend gets better soon!!!!!

You GO girl!!!!! :chuckle

Heck, I can remember when the food pyramid had seven food groups and now there are four, so dieticans change their minds just like everybody else. In this society we are becoming ever more obese, unhealthy, eating fast food etc. I don't believe that the lo-carb diet is unhealthy. It is a life change. I used to eat mashed potatoes and milk gravy and potato chips and all sorts of greasy snacks. Now I eat vegs, meat, no greasy snacks etc. What can be wrong with that. We are in more jeopardy healthwise to be obese and to be eating unhealthy than we will ever be eating a lo-carb diet. One can maintain a weight loss by changing your lifestyle and for me that is a good thing. I will not regain the weight, my mind is made up.

im on atkins and have lost 31 pounds in about 4 months including some minor cheating days in there. i love low carb and the way i feel. !will never go back to sugar and refined carbs
