Any Nurse Work in Orphanage?

Published

Hi fellow RN’s. I am currently trying to find my niche. My background is in oncology nursing. I’m trying to shy away from hospital nursing and I would like to try someone new. I randomly came across RN jobs in an orphanage. Does anyone do this type of nursing ? If so could you tell me what your job is like?

This is going back 40 years, Uncommon, but maybe it will give you a point of reference.

I worked at Anomaly Children's Home, known previously as "The Orphanage", back in '79 & 80 as a Houseparent/EMT. I supervised my own unit of boys 14-18 years of age, but was also on standby for incidental First Aid and for sporting events.

During my time at the children's home, an RN was hired and worked with both a special ed school which was run by the same order and housed in the same building as the children's home.

So basically, the RN was on standby for any children and adolescents requiring initial medical attention, but also was in charge of coordinating med regimens, much as I believe a school nurse would.

I'd be interested in others' knowledge and anything else you might learn from pursuing this endeavor.

Good luck to you, Uncommon!

Welcome - I didn't realize that we still had "orphanages" in the US. In my area they have morphed into group homes, juvenile detention facilities or foster care.

That's pretty much been my experience, or they might be called "residential schools". I gotta warn anyone interested in this; kiddos in what used to be orphanages are the ones with serious behavioral/psychiatric issues. Many of the facilities are more like pediatric psych facilities. Places portrayed in "Cider House Rules" aren't around any more...
