Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?

Published

I am currently at Miami Dade College fulfilling prerequisites in order to apply for the Nursing program that starts fall 2009. I'd like to be in touch with other career changers who after getting a bachelor's in a non-nursing field decided to pursue the program at Miami Dade College.

Thanks for your interest!

I have not applied yet but will be applying for the part time next fall. I have all of my pre-reqs and will be finishing Anatomy 2 and lab this semester and I am in good shape to get an A in both. I have about a 3.91 now without the 2 classes I am taking now (at Broward College) and even with the GPA I have if it would be enough since everyone seems to have perfect gpas now! Some classes were taken at other schools so I am wondering if they just take the GPA of classes at MDC.

Guess I have to call them...oh yeah...they NEVER answer the phone...HELP

Well the 3.91 sounds good and if it helps at all if you go to your DEGREE AUDIT at MDC you will see what your OVERALL gpa is.............I also applied to the part time program this past fall and was rejecter and i have a 3.53 so I am in bad shape from what I see. They only accept once a yr for the part time program but you seem to have a high enough GPA i dont see them denying you at all ............I am taking a class now and will take another next semester in order to boost my gpa to a 3.7 and if that doesn't work I will try somewhere else. I can't keep wasting money taking stupid classes in order to raise my gpa not to mention those classes are not transferrable to any other college. ughhhhhhhhhh But i wish you luck and welcome to the thread we laugh, cry and joke around TOGETHER here !!!!

Thanks so much! You are very encouraging. It is crazy that you have to aim for a perfect GPA or somewhere close to even be considered to the program!!! It is all such a game. I wish you the best and hopefully you can bring your GPA up and we can be in class together! I am really interested in the part time program because due to my life right now I need to work so the accelerated and generic options wont cut it.

Do you have any friends in the part time program? I wonder what it is like and what the typical courseload is. Better yet what kind of schedule do they have! So many questions and no answers. I wish those people at MDC would return phone calls/emails. Thank God for allnurses.com!!

Yes this is a very informative site. I learned alot from this site specially like you said no ONE knows nothing. It's like TOP SECRET stuff. But this is your support system. Some ppl who are in the nursing program come back and KEEP us informed and for them WE are grateful. I know this for the part time generic track. You go to class one day a week in the evening and then you are in school all day on saturday. I too work full time and run a household so this is the only way i will be able to go to school. Hope this helps. I only have friends in the full time no one in the pt

I only have friends in the generic program and even they dont know much about what to expect sometimes from MDC. Dont fret we will all make it somehow! Well we keep in touch and see what we can learn as time goes on. Now my next task is to figure out how exactly to apply and what I need to do to get ready for the application. Is it a separate application I can download or something else? Im sending my transcript when my classes are over this semester. I know there is some test I need to do .

I dk about a test hmmmmmm is that new ? April 30th is the deadline to apply. You make sure you get your transcript sent over to MDC so that they can evaluate it ASAP. (one mistake ppl make and then it's a problem) I am always on here so I will keep in touch. Once you are accepted to MDC you have to go to the Medical Ctr Campus. and get an application (very short application literally) and fill it out but FIRST FIRST FIRST go to the bursars office and pay the $25.00 dollars and then take the application to the admissions and advisement dept downtowns (medical ctr campus) with proof that you paid your application fee if not they wont accept it. HOPE this helps !!!!

I just hope that all my fellow classmates that got accepted this past year bring their "A" game to the nursing program...because it's one thing to go to ratemyprofessor.com and get all the easy cake "A" MDC teachers ...this is why these GPAs are so skewed to the top at MDC...I hope nursing school is not like this, because we are going to be making life or death decisions...and there is no "curve" when you are administering medication to a sick patient...I see many people make comments around here about a "C" in nursing school means continue...well, what do you call "C" student in medical school?..."Doctor"...and would you want to be treated by a doctor that just got by with "C" in Med school...probably not.

I notice there is such a wide gap in grading standards between the Kendall Campus professors and the North/Mercy/Interamerican campus professors...those "A" that we have all been getting from those easy cake professors...are really "C" in another school...hope everyone realizes this and does not get complacent when they get to nursing school...I don't think they give any breaks there.

hope no ones feelings are hurt...just my 2 cents...what I have seen the past year taking pre-req classes at MDC

Ooooooo No your not wrong your totally right............I spent my free time and time i dont have to study my behind off to pass a test that students in my class were cheating on. So ur correct. But what else can you expect from a college that allows the "STUDENTs" TO RUN IT ???!!! I understand "work-study" but these students half the time dk anything or have MAJOR attitude ...........I focus on my teachers and learning what I am suppose to learn because I am paying out of pocket and am trully interested in learning and undestanding the material...........just not focused on just passing but actually putting the material to use later on......:-)

It's ridiculous...I have taken exams with ADULT students...these are not kids we are talking about...and they are cheating, talking to each other...it's sad...

I am hispanic...but I hear many of my hispanic classmates complain that the exam was hard to read or understand...I want to tell them, HEY You came to this country for a new life and to benefit from all it's opportunities...don't expect this country to 'change' or make itself easier for your convenience! That is not how it works around here...if you have a language barrier, take classes like I did...but don't expect this place to turn into Cuba or Venezuela just to make it easier for you...then our country will become another banana republic just like the countries that we left behind...

and don't cheat on your schooling...because in the end...you are really only cheating yourself...professors and school doesn't care, they are making their money...student should take pride in your own efforts.

Thanks you are the best!! I will be sure to PAY first so they don't try me when I go to turn in the application. Hopefully I will have my application complete by January! Wow August seems so far away but it will all be worth it.

NJ640 I totally undestand this is my second semester at MDC so I have seen it all in less than a yr...........Ur right on point........I feel you pain and I see what you see and have experienced what you have as well...........I've been to college before I hold degrees and MDC does have good teachers its' the students that make it hard for themselves..............

Tatortots--> Just make sure once you get your transcript sent over you continue to check the DEGREE AUDIT section and this will tell you if your transcript has been evaluated. AND at this point all we can do it continue to get A's and hope for the best .....................If you hear of anything please share as we do the same .....................

I overlook the "ATTITUDES" the "RUDENESS" the "LACK OF ORGANIZATION" by some of the students there I am focused and willing and able to learn. I am ready to take on the challenge because I know I am dedicated to what I want to do and I believe EVERYONE On this website really and trully care about becoming nurses. If you read back on this thread we've been nervous wrecks, we've joked around and even lifted spirits when there were none to be had so I can safely say we want this rewarding career :-)

30NCN...my posts were more a general statement and not really directed at any one person...I have AS and BA degree myself and returned to MDC after 15 years to find it a different place...I attended the Kendall campus back in the day...I am not sure how it is today...I find everything more expensive...the books are a hand-down robbery...if it were hurricane season, we could sue the book store for price gouging! Most of the professors for the nursing pre-reqs at North, Inter and Mercy campus are giving away easy grades.

The students all scramble to find the "easy" A teachers and most of the teachers are so tired of getting "beat" up by students that they just give in with test reviews with answers or curve the tests grades.

I figure many of these teachers do this because they feel that nursing school and the NCLEX will be the real filter...but then again...you are over-inflating GPA's that are fake...I have a 3.75 GPA with 93 credits at MDC only, and we are talking about classes like Calculus, Inorganic & Organic Chemistry, Physics 1 & 2

look, I'm not tooting my own horn here...I'm pretty humble about stuff...but when I see the GPA required to get in MDC nursing school I laugh and shake my head...the school is doing itself a great dis-service by NOT qualifying students and looking at the overall candidate...using GPA, essay, interview, volunteer work, work experience, etc.

If the school only uses GPA to qualify people, and then they allow these easy classes and professors that hand out "A" like it's a bake sale...the school is doing a great disservice to its reputation and to it's students.
