I am currently at Miami Dade College fulfilling prerequisites in order to apply for the Nursing program that starts fall 2009. I'd like to be in touch with other career changers who after getting a bachelor's in a non-nursing field decided to pursue the program at Miami Dade College.
Thanks for your interest!
Good evening everyone!
I myself was shocked when I got a response about the gpa but I called several times later and nobody else could account for the cut of gpa they all claimed that they don't know what it is for the Spring '10 generic full time nursing program but the first adviser said that it was more or else around a 3.63.
Shen you said that you got a scholarship letter but you got denied for the Accelerated Program. I have heard people saying before that once you get that scholarship letter it means you have obtained a seat into the program, I don't know if that is 100% guaranteed but if that is the case you applied with a 3.7 gpa correct? So if the scholarship e-mail is a guaranteed spot into the program then that cut of gpa sounds just about correct for the Spring semester. I guess there is nothing else we can do but just wait it out. Have a wonderful evening all! yes this whole waiting process does make my head spin :)
Hey guys. So I went to MDC today to see if they would tell me anything about acceptance letters and the cut off GPA. I waited an hour to speak to an advisor. I finally got to one and asked if she knew the cut off for accelerated or generic. She said she couldn't disclose that to me. Then I showed her the scholarship letter that i got in the mail. She smiled at me, gave me a hi-five and said "you go girl!" So I'm assuming that it was good news, but she still wouldn't tell me if it meant I was in. Funny huh?
Shen, are you serious? I can't seem to understand why they would not be straight forward and say well this is the latest with acceptance letters if they know something which will end their misery of having to answer the hundreds or who knows thousands of phone calls they get on a daily basis. Well if she hi-fived you which is kind of weird lol kind of implies to me that you were granted a seat into the program. A few of my friends also made phone calls today to them and one thing that each of them said was that letters for the Generic full time will be mailed out by the end of this week, but as for the gpa out of the many calls it was only that one I got that said it was a 3.63.
Yesterday I spoke to someone in their and she couldn't tell me about the gpa but what she had said was that they usually have 3 batches of letters going out 2 sets of acceptances and 1 set of rejections. The first set goes out and then they wait like about 2-3 weeks to hear back from students that were accepted if they still wanted the seat if the classes did not get filled up then the next set of people that were close to the cut of gpa will be pulled up and then those letters will be sent out and the last batch of letters which are the rejections don't go out until the mid or end of November. At this point I am exhausted with this entire process. I am just going to wait it out. No more calls to MDC it just gives me nightmares even in the day time too :S.

Shen06,
This scholarship letter you received, does it differentiate between the generic or accelerated program? From what I am reading, the letter is for those going into the generic program or is that incorrect?? Anyhow, this cut off gpa everyone is referring pertains to which program??? I guess I'm trying to gauge whether I was rejected for some other reasons than what was given, being that I do have a 3.8 GPA and I have completed all prereqs.
Hi Pomakkya!
The GPA that we are talking about is for the generic full time program. That was the answer I got from an adviser in the Nursing Department yesterday and she said letters for this program are being mailed out sometime this week. This is my first time applying so let's see how it goes for me and the rest of us waiting to hear as well.

Pomakyya,
The scholarship letter was sent to those that applied to the generic program. The cut off GPA was most likely higher than a 3.8 for accelerated, if you got a non-acceptance letter. I also got a rejection letter for accelerated. I applied to both programs so I'm just waiting for a response from the generic program.
I also applied to the full-time generic nursing program but I haven't received any scholarship letter. Does this mean that I should give up any hope of being accepted into the program?
No Crystal!! Don't do that!! Letters haven't been sent out yet. Just because you didn't get a letter doesn't mean you didn't get in. Not everyone who gets accepted get scholarships. So keep your fingers crossed. We are all in the same boat.

Thank you Shen, I'm so relieved to hear that! Good luck to you and to everyone else who applied. I will be waiting to exhale until then...hurry, hurry Mr. postman.

Yep 4 times. The first time I only applied to accelerated with a 3.1 not knowing how competetive it was. Then I applied to both accelerated and generic with a 3.3...another rejection. For fall 2009 I applied with a 3.59 and didn't get in. Now I have a 3.7. I didn't get into accelerated so I'm hoping I still have a chance with generic. I've just been taking classes. I should have a 3.73 after this semester. It's stressing to get rejected so many times, but I had to push myself to keep going. So for all of those who didn't get in, don't give up. Keep pushing.
