Any Johns Hopkins (JHU) BSN/MSN 2008 applicants?

Published

Yes, we're a few months away from applications for the Accelerated BSN track, but I thought I'd see if anyone else was applying for the BSN/MSN (or just BSN portion) at Johns Hopkins, 2008? JHU is my first choice, but I'm also applying to Columbia, Mount St. Marys College (Los Angeles, BSN only) and Oregon Health & Science University.

I'm nervous as I haven't visited the school yet although the Admissions Officers have been very helpful, answering all of my endless questions via email and phone. I'm taking the GRE in October and I have one shot to get it done and get my scores sent off by the Accelerated track early decision deadline, November 1st. I've spoken to some JHU Nursing Alums via allnurses as well and they've been super helpful with my questions as well (thanks!).

How would I pay for it...? Who really knows...

Hello. Does anyone know what day the committee will be meeting? I hear they are still taking applications. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. Everyone please post when you hear. Good Luck.

Still taking applications? Did you hear this from the School of Nursing directly...? How odd, I have no idea how to interpret that. Also, I do not know when the committee is meeting, I was just told this week although my circumstance is a bit out of the ordinary. I know they are super friendly there, so if you are still waiting to hear from them I would consider giving them a call and inquiring.

Good luck!

Did anyone in this thread apply for the 21 month option for the BSN-MSN program? My interview is next week and I wanted to know how long the process is post interview. I've already paid one non-refundable deposit to hold my spot in another program and just received an acceptance to another today. Needless to say, Hopkins is on the top of my list so I'm anxious to know when I would expect a decision after I interview.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hey guys, such an exciting time!! I wanted to know, did anybody else apply to Columbia? I got accepted into both JHU and Columbia for their Accelerated BS/MSN programs...how are other people going about making a decision!??! I know a lot of it will have to do w/ financial aid, but other than that, any preferences? And if Hopkins is your first choice, whether or not you also applied to Columbia, what sold you on Hopkins? Besides the low cost :)

Mary O'Rourke just phoned me and my letter asking for reconsideration convinced the committee, and I've been accepted to the Traditional track (and ACNP!) This call just made my year, I'm so incredibly happy! I'm not sure if I will be able to make it to Accepted Students Day but I'm going to try my best and possibly have a chance to meet some of you folks!

Thanks for bearing with me during this application process...I just got into my dream school and now I have to find out how to pay for it! ;)

Ash-

I'm new to this allnurses thing, but I've read through the posts and I'm sooo glad to see that your journey turned out this way!! It's like a happy ending to a novel :) Congratulations 1,000 times over, you must be so thrilled!!! From what I've read, you absolutely want Hopkins and we're all so lucky to be involved in this amazing program! Isn't Mary wonderful, too!!?? Once again, congrats!

Found it and joined! I was never much of a Facebook user but I hope to be able to meet or talk to as many peers within the cohort as possible. You're so lucky that you don't have to spend energy on finding housing or a roommate!

hmm...I'll have to look for that group as well!

YAY ASHERAH!!!:ancong!: I'm thrilled you made it :) I'm very close to choosing JHU as my school.

Hi all,

I just got the call today from Hopkins. I have been accepted to the BSN (21mo options)/MSN.

RNP---I applied to and was accepted to Columbia yet I really do not want to attend Columbia. My reasons...It's in NYC which means that 1) I can't bring and/or use my new car, 2) Would have to take transit most of the time...which I hate in the winter, 3) housing is way too expensive, and 4) the reputation of the program administration. Trust me, I knew this before applying but needed to have as many options as possible b/c my Master's speciality is not offered everywhere. With that being said I would have chosen Columbia if I had no other options AKA been rejected from all the other programs. It is afterall Columbia and they have my specialty. My thought is ALWAYS...Sacrifice is the Game. I had to think through what I was willing to sacrifice and what I will not sacrifice. For example, I am still waiting for financial aid for both Columbia and JHU. If Columbia offers some SERIOUS $$$$ (Long shot I know) compared to Hopkins then I may have to reconsider. Money may trump my petty, little transportation issues.

You have to ask yourself what you value most.

What made me consider Hopkins over Columbia?

Besides the above, I had to interview for my specialty which gave me the opportunity to talk to both of the program heads. They were so welcoming and were willing to explain everything to me in detail. They seemed like the genuinely cared. That WOW'ed me. The directors of the program made the time for me.

Speaking of financing our education, has anyone received financial aid information of any kind from JHU or to those who were accepted awhile ago, have they given you any preliminary information? I understand that it takes awhile to get the full package, if there even is one. As Columbia issues $20K for their 1-year ETP/BS portion, I doubt JHU does anything comparable or we would have heard about it by now.

I'm composing my list of questions to ask on 2/29, but I keep thinking of how soon I need to approach private lenders for the balance of anything I'm going to need to borrow.

Byrd- thank you for sharing! I've definitely sensed that Hopkins (at least the prospective students/admissions office) is a lot warmer and more willing to help than Columbia. Totally different vibe. I feel your pain when it comes to public transportation in NYC too...I've been visiting family in Manhattan since I was 3 and anything beyond taxis, Amtrak, and walking absolutely intimidates me!! I went up this past weekend, in fact, and ended up leaving my eyeglasses in the west village (4th street) at 1am, realized that I'd left them after I'd gotten back to my grandmother's on E. 87th street, and had to head back downtown. Of course, it was an ordeal to get down there and back in the first place, so my second trip I opted for a $50 taxi ride. ugggh. There are a few reasons why I'd consider Columbia though, besides my extended family being up there. 1) NY Presbyterian reimburses tuition significantly once you've graduated and choose to work there for several years because of the low-income of the majority of their patients (it's some kind of status the government dictates) 2) Columbia offers student housing, which would make room and board maybe even a bit more affordable than living arrangements in B'more and 3) NY credentialing will enable you to work anywhere...alternatively, credentialing in other states doesn't necessarily qualify you to work in NY. Like you, I'm definitely waiting for financial aid packages, and I'm hoping that JHU comes through...but it's definitely nice to have options!!

ASH- What's this about Columbia and $20,000 ? They didn't mention it at open house, but it sure sounds great!!! :)

Who are you guys on facebook? I'm Rachel Peltzman under the Johns Hopkins Nursing Students group!!

RNP,

I don't know all of the details, you may want to check the Columbia ETP posts, but essentially as I understand most of the accepted students are offered a $20,000 scholarship to offset costs during the ETP year and a remaining $10,000 towards the master's portion if students continue on without taking a break. I have no idea if this is need-based, but many of the accepted Columbia students have received their fin. aid packages and have been granted this. However, Columbia tuition wise is from what I've seen a tad more pricey than JHU.
