Any Johns Hopkins (JHU) BSN/MSN 2008 applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Yes, we're a few months away from applications for the Accelerated BSN track, but I thought I'd see if anyone else was applying for the BSN/MSN (or just BSN portion) at Johns Hopkins, 2008? JHU is my first choice, but I'm also applying to Columbia, Mount St. Marys College (Los Angeles, BSN only) and Oregon Health & Science University.

I'm nervous as I haven't visited the school yet although the Admissions Officers have been very helpful, answering all of my endless questions via email and phone. I'm taking the GRE in October and I have one shot to get it done and get my scores sent off by the Accelerated track early decision deadline, November 1st. I've spoken to some JHU Nursing Alums via allnurses as well and they've been super helpful with my questions as well (thanks!).

How would I pay for it...? Who really knows...

Peacebeef-- Good Luck with your application process.

Just wanted to update, I received my aid package in the mail today (about a month earlier than I had been told) and am soo happy I got any grant money at all! More than I expected actually. Keep an eye on those mailboxes :)

I posted this elsewhere and then found this thread. If anyone is still reading it, I would appreciate any advice! Thanks :)

I already have a degree from UNC-CH in something other than nursing, but I decided a year or two ago that I wanted to be a nurse. I did my pre-requisites and applied, and I have been accepted to two schools. YAY! But now I need to decide which one to go to.

First I was accepted to the University of Maryland's Clinical Nurse Leader program and was waitlisted at Johns Hopkins for their Accelerated second-degree BSN. So I sent in my deposit to UMD and planned to start there this fall. But JHU called me last week and said they have a spot for me and did I want it (I had like 5 minutes to decide!). I said yes and they sent me a letter, and I now need to send them my deposit. If I went there I would start at the end of May (which would be great because I hate my job and want to leave it ASAP).

I would be an out of state student for half the time at UMD, making it only about 12k cheaper than JH (46k vs 58k, both seem like huge numbers to me, but my dad the accountant says I should go for the cheaper option).

Also, starting at JH earlier in the year I would have little money for moving expenses, etc (moving in with my bf :redbeathewho just bought a house, in a month). But it would save me the 2 hour commute to northern virginia for my job for a few months. But leaving my job earlier to go to JH would force me to repay my company 2k that they gave me for my prerequisite classes (i don't owe it back a year after completing the courses).

The financial aid office at JH said since I was waitlisted and my acceptance just came in now, I might not get as much financial aid from them. But the lady claimed that private loan rates are actually lower than federal right now. And I could get a job where they agree to pay some of my loans off in return for a few years working for them.

JH is so competitive, I feel like I should go there just because I got in, and because it is so prestigious. Although UMD has a really good nursing school too. Both seem to have great technology and hospitals, yet JH seems smaller and a better faculty student ratio. I'M SO CONFUSED! Any guidance would be appreciated! Anyone out there go to either of these schools?

Well, the big question I see is...when will the financial aid office be sending you your aid package? I'm a traditional student who received a substantial portion of the SON grant funds and that makes me feel much better about the overall costs I will incurring. Accelerated students are eligible to receive between $1-$15K in need-based grant funds. If you are not going to get any of that due to the waitlisting situation, it may make a difference. I would definitely get an idea of when they plan on getting that information in your hands.

I can't speak for anything regarding U-MD and all I can say is I chose Hopkins because of the total package it offers: a faculty/administration that are warm, pro-active mentors to their students, the clinical venues that are available, amazing research resources and ability to participate in clinical research at a BSN level, etc.

Good luck making your choice!

The financial aid office said i would get my package hopefully by the end of this month :( But I need to send in my deposit asap if I want to go there!

Hi there,

I am currently in the accelerated program at JHU SON. I am wondering- what degree will you be getting in the clinical nurse leader program at Maryland? If you will be getting your masters degree at Maryland, and it will be cheaper than getting your BSN at JHU, then it seems like U-MD would be a MUCH better deal financially....Having gone into loads of debt this year to get my BSN, I sometimes wish that I had gone to a less expensive school, because in the end, I am not convinced that "prestige" matters all that. That's just me, although it is also what I've heard from some professors and nurses.

Also, if I were you, I would try to consider long-term factors such as the degree you will be getting in the end and the amount of loans you will need to take out instead of other short-term factors such as being able to quit your job sooner rather than later (although I totally understand your desire to do so!)

Lastly, have you visited either school or gone to an open house or anything? This might also help you decide which school is a better fit for you.

I hope this maybe helps you- I don't mean to sway you one way or the other, but just offer my perspective because I know how difficult it is to make these big decisions :) good luck and congrats!

hi, can some of you please state your stats extracurriculars etc. i'm extremely interested in applying and would like to see what type of students jhu accepts. thanks!

If you're interested in gaining direct patient care/volunteer experience, and are pre-nursing (pre-med or other pursuing any other allied health profession) you can participate as a CCE intern: http://copehealthsolutions.org/services/hwt/CCE%20Program/index.html

I was a CCE at SMMC (Long Beach) and rotated through Telemetry, ER, ICU, OR and NICU. It was a wonderful experience and I've become very comfortable interacting patients as a result.

Have you received your FA yet? What % of total tuition did your free money cover? It makes such a difference to so many what kind of real world assistance comes through.

Yeah I got my package, 13,600 in grants, 11k in subsidized loans, and 10k in regular loans. pretty good :) i decided to go to JHU. I just got the package from UMD and they basically gave me the same amount of loans but no grant. so they equal out in cost.

JHU says tuition for the whole program (13 or so months) is 57,683. then there is matriculation fee (500), books (2520), uniforms (500), travel (2296), medical insurance (3300) and loan fees (446). i won't be borrowing what they allow you to borrow for housing (12740), food (4830) and personal expenses (1960).

UMD was a bit different, they said on my package that my tuition for the 2008-2009 year was 15k, which its not because i would be an out of state student. so i guess i'm only allowed to borrow enough for an in state student? if i was was going there i'd call and ask but i'm not so i won't. it's just weird.

oh i meant to say, i'm not borrowing what i'm authorized to for food, housing and personal expenses because i will be living with my bf

Accelerated students are eligible to receive between $1-$15K and Traditional students $1-$10K (per year), as the grant funds are allocated based on need.

Yes, I have received my package and I was quite happy with what I received in grant funds.
