Any Jan 2010 UIC GEP Applicants Out There?

Published

Hi all!

I'm new to the allnurses.com site and am so impressed at the wealth of information available on here. Kudos to everyone who participates and posts- sharing your knowledge is so valuable, especially to newbies like me! So, I wanted to start a roll call for Jan 2010 UIC GEP applicants on here.

Yes, it may be a little early considering applications aren't due until March 2009, but I'm super excited (and terrified). I'd love the opportunity to commiserate with some fellow students over the intimidating application process. I just started studying for the GRE and am feeling like I need to go back to the second grade to re-learn basic math!! Did anyone else have this same experience?

I'm 26, work full time in a completely non-health care field, graduated with a degree in Philosophy and pre-med emphasis (don't worry, I came to my senses right out of college and decided med school is not the most effective way (for me) to make a difference!). Most of my pre-reqs are done, except for A&P II and the Research Methods course. I'm having trouble getting letters of reccommendation, shadowing a NP, and studying the GRE (test anxiety...yuck!). Hope to hear from you guys!

Yeah - I thought of that too. If they told us we would have had a response by the end of last week and we are going to be rejected I would assume they would have just sent us the email by Friday, right? I am hoping they just have not yet made up their minds about those of us waiting, or they have not figured out exactly when they want to host the interviews.

KrindyK, did the woman that you spoke with in admissions give you any indication when Chris Ocampo might be back in the office or accessible? Since he is the one who sent the original email stating we would hear something by Friday, it would be really helpful to talk to him directly.

No, she didn't say. I let her know that he was the one who let us know we should hear by last Friday, but she wouldn't say anything.

I just wish we could hear ANYTHING - even if it was just a mass email saying, the number of applications was higher than expected and they need extra time to process them. (which I'm sure is probably what this is all about) That would be some kind of info and MUCH appreciated! As it stands now, I keep thinking there is something wrong with my email or maybe I gave them the wrong phone number.

Plus, is anyone else feeling like this isn't a very good reflection of the school - no one has returned phone calls or emails and the peer advisor line just rings and rings. And, they've got a handful of applicants on a forum website trying to piece together information to find out what is going on!

I agree - the lack of information (and incorrect information) we've been given about this process has been very frustrating. And I've been unable to contact anyone at the school - also frustrating!

I know -I worried that I may have given them the wrong number too! You are right that this does reflect some irresponsibility on the part of the school - at least keep the students informed. I had the same problem with my application to Rush; I busted my butt to get my application in to them and they told me for months that they could not even find my materials! I got accepted to their program but am turning them down based, in part, on the disorganization I experienced with the school. Hopefully UIC will get their act together and tell us something SOON.

KrindyK, did you apply to Depaul, too? If you turn down Rush and don't get into UIC, what else are you considering?

I did apply to DePaul, was accepted, and have accepted my spot in their program. If UIC accepts me, I will back out of DePaul (and lose $350 matriculation fee), and attend UIC. If not, I will be starting DePaul in September. DePaul has been super responsive and timely throughout the whole process...the only downside is their price tag.

That's great - I've heard good things about the DePaul program. Congrats on getting in. I have another UIC question for you - when you talked to a woman in admissions, do you remember her name? It looks like Elizabeth Fern and Rachel Maldonado both work in admissions with Chris Ocampo, and I was thinking about giving them a call - did you talk to either one of them?

I think it was Rachel Maldonado - let me know if you talk to someone. What is your plan B?

Congrats on DePaul, Krindy!

I had no luck with the admissions office. Oh well, I guess I'll start looking for a rejection letter in the mail - maybe there was some internal miscommunication about how applicants would be notified if they were not chosen for an interview.
