Any Jan 2010 UIC GEP Applicants Out There?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi all!

I'm new to the allnurses.com site and am so impressed at the wealth of information available on here. Kudos to everyone who participates and posts- sharing your knowledge is so valuable, especially to newbies like me! So, I wanted to start a roll call for Jan 2010 UIC GEP applicants on here.

Yes, it may be a little early considering applications aren't due until March 2009, but I'm super excited (and terrified). I'd love the opportunity to commiserate with some fellow students over the intimidating application process. I just started studying for the GRE and am feeling like I need to go back to the second grade to re-learn basic math!! Did anyone else have this same experience?

I'm 26, work full time in a completely non-health care field, graduated with a degree in Philosophy and pre-med emphasis (don't worry, I came to my senses right out of college and decided med school is not the most effective way (for me) to make a difference!). Most of my pre-reqs are done, except for A&P II and the Research Methods course. I'm having trouble getting letters of reccommendation, shadowing a NP, and studying the GRE (test anxiety...yuck!). Hope to hear from you guys!

rnewhouse1, I just PM'd you.

Liu2 and judr, I hope you hear from UIC soon!

Hey Judr-- just wanted to let you know, I just emailed the CON asking if they had already sent out all of their decisions re. interviews cause I still hadn't heard anything (maybe you have done the same thing!) and they wrote me back saying, "You will hear about your status before the end of the week."

Hmm. That's consistent with what they told us in their last email, so I guess we'll just have to wait patiently. It sure is difficult, but I'm trying not to panic just yet!

I was notified this morning for my interview for the FNP program. I'm looking forward to meeting people next Wednesday.

Anyone hear from Acute Care, yet??

Who else is feeling like their head will explode with nervousness!?

Good luck to everyonoe who already have interviews!

Hi weezbug123,

I feel your pain - I haven't heard anything yet from adult/ger NP. Have a look at earlier posts, Liu2 also applied to acute care and our specialties are in the same department (biobehavorial health sciences, see the following link: http://www.uic.edu/nursing/about/bhs.shtml), and maybe that department just hasn't finished its review yet. Has anyone else who applied to adult or geriatric or acute care heard about an interview?

I applied to adult NP and haven't heard anything either, so I hope you're right :) It certainly seems reasonable. I will post again if I hear something. Good luck to everyone.

Has anybody heard about Midwifery? Has anyone heard if they did not receive an interview? I'm nervous....its driving me insane!!!

It's driving me crazy too. I know a few midwifery people who have interviews. I think they were contacted last week. I don't know of anyone who has heard they would not be interviewed. I bet they'll send out a mass email on Friday for those of us that don't get one, but that's just a guess. Does anyone know how many people they typically interview?

My friend just found out yesterday about Midwifery...I thought people would be contacted based on specialty but apparently that isn't the case?? I spoke with Chris Ocampo last week and he told me that if I don't hear by Wednesday (today) to call him on Thursday, which leads me to believe I didn't get an interview since I've heard nothing!!!!!

I have no idea how many people get interviewed....I'm hoping its extremely selective so i feel like less of a moron! Good luck everyone

Don't feel bad - it is an EXTREMELY selective program. When I talked to a peer advisor earlier this year, he said that for Acute Care NP the program offered only like 7 seats for his particular year. Some of the other tracks had even less. Here's what he sent in an email:

"We do not know how many spots are open for each specialty year-to-year, and have no idea how many applications we will get for each.

Here are the breakdowns for the GEP class that I am in:

Midwifery - 3

FNP - about 5

PNP - about 4

ACNP - about 7

We do not know how many spots will be open in subsequent years, but it's probably about the same, give or take 1 or 2.

I have been told that traditionally, they have received more applications for Midwifery, PNP, FNP, and Women's Health NP than other specialties, but all are competitive. I anticipate the new Perinatal CNS program to get a lot as well."

So, clearly, the competition is tough, and we shouldn't feel bad if we didn't get asked for an interview. I just wish they had more seats available!

Last year when I was invited to interview, the initial invitation email was sent to 20 people from "the NMW-WHNP faculty" - I'm not sure if that meant they interviewed 20 people for midwifery and women's health, or just midwifery.

Admissions last year told me they accepted 4 for midwifery and it's one of the smaller specialties (but more competitive). There's also a waitlist, but it's quite long, it seems.

I've talked to current students who've said they know people who have gotten into other really good/prestigious/competitive programs and still didn't get into UIC. If you don't get in, it doesn't mean you're not cut out to do this, it just means UIC has very few spots available. (The smallest number of spots for midwifery that I've heard for any similar program, actually. I'm not sure about for other specialities.)
