Any former Marine grunts going into nursing?

I spent 10 years in the Marine Corps infantry and now I'm trying to get my pre-reqs knocked out to get into the RN program in Pensacola. Any other 03s out there doing the same? I was hoping I wasn't alone.

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.
I'm former Army enlisted (11C) and also a FF/EMT. One of the 2 other guys in my nursing program at a local CC was also prior service (Naval officer). There are not a ton of ♂'s overall in nursing but many do seem to be former service members.

Maybe we're just more secure in our our masculinity than non-vets?

Do you have an amplifying stethoscope, mortar man?

(11B here, btw...good to see you!)

another Marine checking in. I was motor T, but my brother who has been a nurse for about 10 years now was a grunt.

There's a company that sells shirts that say, "Your nurse wore combat boots" lol kind of cheesey but cool.

Welcome aboard gyrene! I just finished school this Sept 2010 and am now awaiting to sit for the NCLEX. One thing to play to your advantage is a lot of the older gents I had as patients are vets. Don't know how many times we had a troublesome spiteful downright mean crusty old man with diabetes or copd giving the ladies hell, refusing meds, etc...I'd go in an see the ol eagle, globe, anchor tattoed on their arm, or a navy ship emblem on a ball cap hanging near their bed...and I'd ask them something and if they replied in a positive I'd quitely say ooh rah..and go back to my assesment..sometimes they never asked they would just smile..other times they'd recognize we both belonged to the same brotherhood and it would end up I was the only student that they'd deal with.

My husband was in 2/3 (Echo Co) from '93-'96 (I didn't join the Marine Corps until '98, so this was before my time). =) Small world.

Small world indeed. @careteam 70, which Co. were you, I was with Wpns Co. then was transferred to H&S due to my computer skills. I joined you guys just right after desert storm. (We were guarding K-Bay against any Iraqi amphibious invasion then. We were successful. The Iraqis failed to set foot on K-Bay. Hehe.) We went to Oki and spent about 3 months in Subic. Whew, memories....

Same here, Hvy Weaps Company..can't remember his name but had the captain that was a marathon enthusiast..used to turn anyone who signed up for a marathon down in Diego free for early liberty and you could avoid weekend duty same way. He was still there when I mustered out.
