i noticed the thread in the prenursing forum about class of '08 and i did post there but thought maybe i would start a thread specifically for '09 and see who is out there!! (plus it would suck when everyone graduated and left me alone in the post haha) i'm using the same format as that post because it was so good. post your info. here and introduce (or re-introduce) yourself!! it would be great to be able to support one another right to the end!!
name: karen
school: brandon university, canada
program: 4 yr. bachelor of nursing
what area of interest at this time: i am just really open to anything at this point .. so much to learn and i feel that this is just opening up to me and i will figure out where my interest lies.
biggest fear: not sure of that either. i am not sure if i will gag over anything or not. maybe my biggest fear would be looking stupid, but heaven knows i've done enough of that!
what you'd like us to know about you: i'm a mom of 4 (2 boys, 2 girls) and have worked (and still do) as a christian camp director for the past 5 years. i'm really enjoying university again. i graduated back in '85 with a b.ed. the next year i took a stats course and didn't go back until 2005 fall .. so on paper it took me 26 years to complete my pre-reqs haha .. in reality i (mostly) did them all since last fall!
my really neat thing this year is that my oldest daughter is going to be going to university at the same time as me but taking music! that is a very unique opportunity!!
i'm looking forward to talking with you all and helping to encourage you any way i can! :roll
name: danielle
school: harford community college (maryland).
program: associate degree nursing (december 2009).
what area of interest at this time: i am excited to work in the area of diabetes care, emergency treatment, mental health, and neurology.
biggest fear: being able to balance family/friends, home responsibilities and school. a lot of people have told me that life "stops" when you're in nursing school, and i hate to think that is true........'cause i need to play candyland, drink red wine, eat sushi, and clean my house.....although not all at the same time. :roll
what you'd like us to know about you: 32 years old. married to my husband, del, for almost 6 years. 3 1/2 year old son, alexander. worked in community mental health for 10 years (ba in psychology) before deciding to start nursing school.
Hello-
I'm still recovering from last semester. It was not too hard, but very busy. And next semester I'll have maternal health, pediatrics and a nursing elective. Classes don't start for a week, but I already have reading and other assignments. In fact I go to my first childbirth ed class this Sunday.
But I keep on telling myself I'm halfway through - only 3 more semesters to go.

Hi, Mel! Nice to see ya! I think it's amazing the people who work full time and go to school .. I know it can be done but I am not sure I am disciplined enough to do both things well! Anyway .... I also am just wide open to where exactly I want to work -- still ... in fact, I am thinking I might not decide until much after I graduate!Hi Class of 2009!! I thought I'd chime in on this one & say Hi.
hey, danielle! well, i think you can still fit all that other stuff in but, like mel said about her full-time job, you have to plan for it like you maybe didn't before! i know i need to get better organized this term .. maybe i will get writing up a schedule for my entire life today, not just for school! gl to you in your studies!! when do you start?name: danielleschool: harford community college (maryland).

program: 4 yr. bachelor of nursing
what area of interest at this time: i know i don't like surgery and that i'm probably won't want to work pediatrics. my mind is mostly open. i love med/surg. and geriatrics. i can't wait to experience hospice and psych nursing!
biggest fear: my biggest concern is a decision of mine hurting someone. and not graduating would suck.
what you'd like us to know about you: i'm your typical college student; i'm turning 21 in a couple of weeks. i draw, paint with pastels, and write stories in my free time. and i'm a geek in various different things -- batman, x-men, star wars, blah, blah, blah. i also love reading when i get a chance.
what got me into nursing: well, that's a long story. lol.
i was planning on becoming a roman catholic nun for as long as i could remember and i went on a trip to visit several different convents. one order i was attracted to had caring for sick people as part of their work. i was fascinated. this interest in healthcare stuck even when i decided that being a nun wasn't for me. my uncle, a respiratory therapist, was the one who actually directed me toward nursing in particular -- i had been considering physical therapy before. i spent the summer of my junior year trying to tire myself out of nursing. i volunteered several days a week at a local hospital and the other nights went to class to become a cna. every once in a while, i also shadowed a nurse on the floor. when i wasn't completely sick of nursing by the end of the summer, i decided that it was a sign that i was meant to do this, lol!
i worked nightshift at a local retirement home throughout my senior year of high school, trying to give myself some realistic experience. it has been amazing having some experience under my belt even before clinicals! i even passed pills before everyone else when i got my medtech at home!
i love nursing. i can't see myself doing anything else.
great idea. and we'll pick up people next year too.
