Any BSN graduates pursuing a a M.D. degree after graduation??

Hi there, I don't know if this topic has been brought up before, but I was just wondering is there any BSN graduates out there pursuing a M.D. degree after graduation? If so, can you tell me how come or what made you decided to go to into medical school?

Well let me tell you why i chose the nursing path. I have always wanted to be a doctor, family practice or dermatology. I know that for the pre-reqs for medical school you have to have the certain amount of science classes and they prefer you to have a bachelor degree. So from there I thought to myself, well would I like to major in business, biology, or nursing to pursue this. Well I x'ed out business b/c the economy is bad and so I had biology and nursing left. So I planned it out with both majors and with many thoughts about it, I decided to major in nursing b/c I thought to myself *if I can't make it into medical school there are money opportunities in nursing where I can specialized in something, for example NP or CRNA so I got best of both world. I feel really bad like I say to go into nursing w/o the mind set of "yes this is what I want to do and I always wanted to be one" but I hope ppl understand that I didn't steal anyone's spot on the nursing program, i worked hard for it and I am proud to be chosen to go to the school i wanted. So I am sorry if i offended anyone. Right now I am int he first semester of a BSN program and i feel like I am not motivated at all, maybe I should shadow those ppl like u say and see whether I like it or not. Thank you again tho.. :)

I am so glad to see this post....... this has weighed heavily on my mind since , about the last year of nsg school..... I thought I wanted to be a nurse, but in actuality what I wanted to be is an MD. The truth is, the only nursing area I like is Neonatal Intensive care, everything else makes me want to puke with the thought of doing it for even one week, never mind a career, I guess at heart I really am not a "nurse" in the true sense.. So, this makes me limited in job options, being such a rare specialty with not every hospital having one (NICU). And, I dont even have my BSN yet,graduated froma diploma program with my RN. I dont even know where to begin on becoming an MD now. Can anyone offer me nay help on that one? But in my opinion, if someone werent in nsg school allready, and wanted to become a doc, forget nsg school, it would be a waste of time. I had one guy like that in my class he said "this nsg school B>S> is just a stepping stone for me, I plan to "go on" to med school when I am done." We all laughed. He was one of the first one to drop out bcause he failed. SO, nanali, I say GO FOR IT anyway. If you even have it in your mind to be a doc, then you should be one, bsn or not, provided you get accepted, etc. I am personally afraid of being pre med and not getting accepted into med school. The only med school in my state is BROWN UNIVERSITY. Standards a lil too high for me , I imagine. Anyway, good luck. Sorry bout the long winded post... long story short..I am considering going pre med. GOOD LUCK. NURSING IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY, NAMELY me.....lol

Thanks for the encouragement! :) *sigh* maybe I should seek a counselor and see what he/she might say. I don't know.. :o I mean if I don't make it to med school what am I going to do w/a bio degree? I guess I jaut wanted to see if anyone else in the same situation or one who have made it for some encouragement, but so far it seem like my decision is wrong...

There are many of us who chose nursing because it had opportunities that combine the best of medicine and nursing. I had thoughts about med school, but as I learned about NPs and CRNAs I was drawn toward nursing. I've loved my time as an ICU nurse and a floor nurse, although the floor was a very tough place. I'm going to CRNA school this fall. I am a nurse, I love being a nurse, AND I'm excited to go on.

I guess you should assume that you will spend some time as a bedside nurse and think - will I like this? Dealing with bodily functions, suffering and death up close (closer than most MDs) is taxing. It's also very rewarding - you can develop a special rapport with a patient that no other health care specialty can. I love making people comfortable, and I enjoy using critical thinking and science knowledge with my "sick as snot" ICU patients. Do you think you can do bedside care? Do you want to? If not, well, most nurses believe that all nurses, including advanced practice, should have bedside experience. In most cases I agree. If it's not your thing, don't put the time and energy into nursing school.

NO WAY!!! I want to be a nurse...not a physician. As I have learned over the time I've spent in nursing school being a nurse is completely different from being a doctor. Even if I did want to become a doctor, I would not become a nurse first. It is a waste of money and time to get one degree that you know you don't want to work with. Completely different in roles, responsibilities, and duties.

I know of several people who, after graduating the BSN program I'm currently attending, have decided to go on to med school. Most of them did not realize they wanted to be physicians until after they'd already begun/completed nursing school.

My brother is a physician (just graduated residency in his late 30s) and I was a pre-med before I enrolled in the BSN program (I grad in '06). I still have vague notions of going to med school occasionally, but if I chose to do so it would be several years down the road, once my children are older. I still don't know that I'd be willing to make the sacrifices that it requires to be a doctor, but time will tell.

I would agree, pursuing a BSN as a "pre-med" degree wouldn't be my recommendation to anyone. Good luck! :)

You need to complete a bachelor's degree and take all of the pre-reqs to medical school. You can finish your BSN since you are well on the way to getting that. You need to choose a school where you want to attend to finish your Bachelor's and talk to the pre-med advisor. They will help you plan out what coursework you need, and when you should take the MCATs etc.

The usual set of courses include 1 yr general biology, 1 year general chemistry, 1 year organic chemistry and 1 year physics. Visit the pre-med forums on www.studentdoctor.net They have a sticky with very helpful information.

You may want to check into the possibility of studying to become a neonatal nurse practitioner or physician assistant if you decide med school really isn't for you.

Don't be afraid of the term "pre-med" either. As long as you have the requisite coursework completed, the admissions committees are looking fro people who will make good doctors -- and that doesn't necessarily mean biology majors. Your experience in the hospital and especially in the NICU is important.

A friend is a dual major in Nursing and Biology, "to keep her options open." Much much much respect to her, she is very smart and does outstandingly well in both, but I'm not so hot on the idea personally. I think you should make up your mind and concentrate on one or the other initially. And if you're sure you want to be a physician a BSN is not a good pre-med degree. A stepping-stone nursing is not, but rather a seperate profession. Despite the fact that it would be going from a more advanced degree to a less advanced one, I think that going to nursing school after med school is about the same thing. Sure, pharm, A&P, patho, biology type knowledge would transfer real well from either one to the other, but it's an entirely different mindset, philosophy, scope, and day-to-day work situation. And let's keep in mind that not all pre-med types are going for Bio or even science degrees ... you just need a certain set of pre-reqs in your liberal arts education.

Personally I had toyed with the idea of becoming a doctor before going to nursing school. I had worked in the healthcare field for a while already and got to work with some great people on both sides, and I decided that nursing was for me.

BSN, like any other pre med courses, is a good pre medical course. if you will take up BSN as a pre-med course would be to your advantage in the medical school. During your BSN, you will have subjects which will already introduce you to medical subjects like the major subjects in nursing like pharmacology, medical surgical nursing, maternal and child health, psychiatry to name a few. secondly, you will be exposed to the clinics as nurse intern and you will appreciate more your medical course because somehow you will already have a clear idea of what is happening in the clinics. if you want to take up BSN, prior to MD go for it, you will have more plusses than the student in the regular pre-med.

In all seriousness, your post describes me perfectly - EVERY area of nursing except the NICU just sucks to me. I am going the route of NNP. Have you considered this? The time and crap involved with becoming an MD is just not worth it for me at this point in my life. However, the advanced practice role will get me the h*ll away from the bedside and into a role I am more suited for. I'm just throwing some thoughts out there for you, but when I saw your post I was thrilled to see someone that feels the same as I do and wanted to let you know that you are not alone out there :)

I'm sorry, I just have to disagree with this. BSN is not a pre med course. A good preperation for med school is a thorough liberal arts education with an emphasis on science. A BSN is a professional degree for nursing. MD is a professional degree for medicine. Totally different.
