We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.
I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?
As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.
I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?
What would you have them do? Parents of vaccine-allergic kids with asthma - should they be forced to home school? Let's just quarantine all the old people. And really, people with cancer are pointless anyway, especially the ones with children. Let's ship them off to live on cancer wards. What a horrible perspective!
They could wear masks couldn't they? Yeah they should take precautions as well.
I have read the label on the vaccines. Why does it say safety and effectiveness have not been established in pregnant women then?
What medication label states it is safe in pregnancy? Can you name one? What do you think Tylenol says about use during pregnancy? It is stated as class C pregnancy risk. There are almost no drugs that have undergone randomized control trials in pregnant humans. That is why most of the data comes from retrospective studies and pregnant animal studies, so most medications will always have a warning about pregnancy.
Take a look at all the common OTC medications that are considered safe in pregnancy and look them up. I don't think I have ever found one rated a pregnancy category A. Even Tums is rated a C.

This goes back to understanding the research, and not relying on anti-vaccine websites.
We can say beyond a reasonable doubt. I amazed at all the people that just don't understand the basic idea of science.
I doubt that. I am amazed at how many go along with various scientific studies, claiming it as truth, when there has been evidence of scientists twisting the data. This can happen especially by those who take a special interest in the study group itself.
Stop with your ranting... I am not a horrible person. I am actually someone that truly cares about my patients. I don' trust the government to be honest with us. Studies can be swayed. Yes we have eliminated a lot of diseases from vaccinations, but sanitation has helped there also. Done with this post.
I was just posting another thread under "Disasters .. . . " and noticed this thread is STILL going strong. 1077 posts . . really?? Surely there MUST come a time when realization hits that no matter how much research is presented nor how much education is presented in discerning research vs tabloid, researchers vs idiots, you're wasting your time. Posts in this thread are no longer attempting to reach RNs open to change but to change beliefs of zealots, and that ain't gonna happen.
Just because there is no evidence doesn't mean it isn't a problem.
There is evidence to show that it doesn't cause a problem except in those specific circumstances that I already stated.
Just because you believe something does not make it factual or even a reason why something should be changed.
You will never be satisfied with any the amount of any research that there is unless it fits your beliefs. You have admitted to this over and over. You only argument so far has been "I believe" everything else you have stated has systematically been disproved with peer-reviewed scientific literature.

I agree. Thank you for your input. You are not a horrible person and don't let anyone here make you feel that way.

Your comment was sarcastic and related back to when I mentioned that I stay 3 feet away from sick people. However, if you read in context what I was saying you would understand that when I provide patient care, I wear a mask. Masks are required for patients in droplet precautions.
