Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

I don't believe in herd immunity. I think it's a ridiculous way to force others into getting vaccinated.

"Believe"? This isn't Santa.

The flu won't kill me because flu deaths are inflated. I'm not scared of the flu. I haven't been sick in years. I do the simple basic things....eat right, exercise, wash my hands, wash my hands before I eat, touch my face, and when I come home from anywhere, it's the first thing I do.

This is the very definition of ignorance.

But I'll play along.

You won't die. But you'll kill other people. Your grandparents. Babies. People with cancer. People with asthma.

And you'll do that before you know you're sick.

All because you didn't bother to ask your doctor if they have a single dose option for your flu shot. You know.... The version that doesn't have all those evil, nervous system-destroying preservatives.

You have been the only person to persist in this "debate" for hundreds (a thousand?) posts. Have you stopped to ask yourself why?

Well, geeeeezzz, andi78, ANYTHING is possible. Just how far are you willing to take it?

Is there a spaceship of beings on the other side of the moon, or whatever tripe the Scientologists claim?

If anything is possible, how about the possibility that vaccines do more good than harm?

I highly doubt we would see a disaster. These diseases are rare. Take Ebola for instance, it came here to the US and now boom, it's gone. Not that many got infected....because of precautions and better sanitation. If everyone were to stop being vaccinated, I really wonder if we would even see a large scale disease outbreak. As was said before, the rates of the diseases we vaccinate against were in decline when the vaccines came out. What we should be worrying about are superbugs and the overuse of antibiotics. Will our antibiotics even work in 10 or 20 years? That's much more scary don't you think? But we continue to feed antibiotics to livestock, the live stock most people eat unless you can afford organic and grass-fed. Also, it's in the water supply. Then doctors prescribe them to patient's for a little sniffle. Most illnesses are caused by viruses, which we all know antibiotics won't help.

Do you think the U.S. is an impenetrable bubble? Do you not realize the amount of international travelers that come through and to the U.S. on a daily basis?

Measles causes about 145,000 deaths per year still world-wide. That is down from over 2,600,000 deaths in 1980 prior to mass vaccination.

It is estimated that if we stopped vaccinating for polio right now that within 10 years there would be 200,000 new polio infections by that 10th year and would grow exponentially.

1,500,000 children under the age of 5 die from vaccine-preventable diseases every year.

The DTAP and measles vaccinations are estimated to save 2-3 million lives annually.

WHO | Measles

We have millions of people entering and leaving the United States every year, and where visiting places like Mexico is relatively safe from vaccine preventable disease. In comparison most of Africa and SE Asia have low vaccination rates that as shown above still have high rates vaccine preventable diseases. It was estimated during the Ebola scare that 190,000 people from west Africa come to the U.S. each year. That doesn't include people traveling there for personal or business reasons and returning to the U.S. BBC News - The growth of global immunisation

Stopping vaccinations would be just like playing Russian Roulette except the gun would be fully loaded.

Antibiotic prescriptions have dropped dramatically in the last 10 years.

Antibiotic use in animals is another debate, but there is no evidence to support that properly handled and cooked meat would have any effect on antibiotic resistance in people. Improperly cooked meat where the meat was infected and the animal had been given antibiotics regularly through its feed could theoretically cause antibiotic resistance infection.

Vaccines are the number one means of decreasing mortality behind having a clean water supply.

Also, I wouldn't say that vaccines and autoimmune issues could have a link is a lie. It's possible. It's also possible that vaccines do cause other health problems and maybe even contribute to cancer, but we don't know for sure do we? Have studies been done? I don't know. I doubt it. Most studies are trying to show how safe it is.

Yes, we know for sure that vaccines do not cause auto-immune diseases or cancer.

You can always argue that science has not absolutely proven that humans cannot fly either, but I guess when "you believe" anything is possible in your own mind.

I will not be bullied into leaving healthcare because of others opinions. I do not believe that a pregnant woman should be forced into getting a vaccination that has in no way been proven to be safe. You cannot ethically research that!

Exactly. That's how I care for them. I'm pretty good if I can provide patient care like that.

Who knew that nursing care involved giving no care at all..?

No one can say for sure that these vaccinations do not cause auto-immune diseases or cancer! If anyone trusts the government to protect you the you are living in a fantasy world. Look up collateral damage. What happens when someone in your family is not one of the better for the greater good.

That again would be another myth. Why is it that every anti-vaccine person thinks that I believe or just take my word for it counts as scientific proof?

It is just terrible there are no studies to show vaccines are safe during pregnancy. I would hate to think all these vaccine recommendations were just made up on the "I believe" research method.

Is hasn't been proven that aliens do not live among us or that humans cannot fly either, but so far all the people jumping off of tall building have met the same expected fate a long fall with a sudden stop, and no flying was visualized in any of these cases.

Billions of vaccines doses given and no increase in auto-immune diseases or cancer compared to non-vaccinated populations. That seems to be strong indicator that the two are not related.

Exactly. So why get the flu shot if you can prevent yourself and others from getting it by washing your hands?

Does the vaccine give a false sense that the vaccinated cannot spread it? Handwashing isn't always performed. I've been a witness.

Do you know how the flu is spread?
