We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.
I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?
As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.
I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?
Andi, using your logic.....
Most young American children believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Although there is no factual data suggesting that there really IS a Santa Claus or Tooth Fairy, by virtue of the fact that there are a great many children who believe this to be truth, I must accept that there is validity in their belief. Despite reasonable evidence to the contrary, the fact remains that there are lots and lots of people who believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy. There are a very many websites devoted to sightings and stories of both of these icons. In fact, there are also a great number of books printed on the topic of the adventures of both of these beings. One cannot discount the repetitious nature of all of these stories to be anything other than truth.
Conclusion: Belief in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy is a valid and reasonable assumption based on the stories exchanged by so many people in America. With such high numbers of people who believe in both S.C. and T.F., it is reasonable to give weight to this belief.
Moral: Recognizing a mass delusion does not make it factual.
Watch 2 magicians destroy the anti-vaccine movement in 90 seconds
An illustration is worth a thousand words.
I saw it was lengthy, so skimmed this article......and found the word "autism" cropping up in nearly every paragraph. Which tells me that if these are the top reasons people are not vaccinating, it's even MORE imperative that medical professionals DO THEIR JOBS and inform them that there IS NO LINK.Repeating a discredited, obsolete "causation" over and over does not make it truthful....only repetitive.
Actually, the autism part was only reason #1. There are 6 reasons listed. Important reasons as well. To say there is absolutely no link between vaccines and autism is not right. There are studies that prove and disprove it. So there is no clear answer.
If you focused on just the autism part, you missed a lot of other info in the article. It gave more reasons. It offered a lot. I think it explained the reasons parents hesitate or avoid vaccines. That's the point of the article. To show people like you, people who think vaccines are next to God, that look, vaccines aren't all you think they're cracked up to be.Again, you think you know everything. Unfortunately, you do not. Until you take a humble approach to learning, you will not gain wisdom.
You didn't answer my question: have you taken a research class?
I used the autism point as an example, the crux holds true for the other 5 claims. Theoretical possibility does not equate causation, nor does loose correlation.
I absolutely don't know everything. I have read the research. I have a doctoral level education in clinical practice. I have stated many times that vaccines are not without risk; if there was no disease in the world i wouldn't vaccinate anyone. The problem is the risk of inaction given that disease does exist.

Here are some of the points the article makes. I'll make it easier for you.
The Top 6 Reasons Why Parents Are Choosing Not To Vaccinate Their Kids | Collective-Evolution
"Shaw and Seneff also recently published a paper in the Journal Immunome Research outlining a lot of evidence pointing to the dangers regarding aluminum in vaccines." http://people.csail.mit.edu/seneff/Shaw_et_al_Immunome_Res_2013.pdf
"A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition determined that an increased vulnerability to oxidative stress and decreased capacity for methylation may contribute to the development and clinical manifestation of autism. It's well known that viral infections cause increased oxidative stress. (12) Research suggests that metals, including those found in many vaccines are directly involved in increasing oxidative stress."
"Oxidative stress, brain inflammation and microgliosis have been heavily documented in association with toxic exposures including various heavy metals. (14)"
There is a ton more references to data in that article. All you have to do is click on the footnotes and links and it takes you directly to the information.
The second reason is scientific fraud.
"A congressional record from May 1, 2003 shows that there could be, and that many scientists themselves believe that there is a high risk of autism as a result of Thimerosal-containing vaccines. Again, this is a congressional report and parents who choose not to ignore it should not be bashed by others, don't you think? The report even shows information from the CDC's own Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) that postulates the vaccine-autism connection.(17)"
"Insider whistle-blowers†with verified credentials have also played a role with parents who are concerned about vaccinating their children. This type of thing has been going on for quite a while. Take Robert F. Kennedy Jr for example. He repeatedly stated that there is a cover up†of data that clearly shows a definitive link between vaccines and autism. He also alluded to the fact that he has met with some of these people, that they know what they are doing, and that they are terrified of the public ever finding out. Think about that for a second, we have the former presidents nephew, who has been in elitist circles and obviously in and around people who've held powerful positions making these comments. Of course these are concerning comments, and to not completely dismiss them as false isn't a bad†thing. One of the biggest concerns for parents was the fact that he, in June 2005, authored an article in Rolling Stone and Salon.com alleging a government conspiracy to cover up connections between vaccines and autism. Both of the articles were retracted. (18)(19) There are many speeches he made, and compelling statements that are available in the form of articles and YouTube videos if you are interested in seeing more."
The CDC has put the research 10 years behind, because the CDC has not been transparent. We've missed 10 years of research because the CDC is so paralyzed right now by anything related to autism. Really what we need is for congress to come in and say, give us the data.†(
I don't have all day here, but you can easily go to the link I provided. There is tons of information there.
If you shut down after seeing the word autism, I can guarantee, you're not open enough to learn about new things. You refuse to take off your blinders and see what is really happening.
To say there is absolutely no link between vaccines and autism is not right. There are studies that prove and disprove it.So there is no clear answer.
There are studies that give theoretical data suggesting a possible link. There are no studies that "prove" it. There are studies that, beyond reasonable doubt, disprove it though. So there is a clear answer you just don't agree with it.
Again, there is also a correlation/link between consumption of water and autism. Or breathing air and autism. Or organic food sales and autism.

And the troll continues on.....
I guess it does doesn't it. You have to understand that not everyone believes the science you present. Scientists have even declared links to issues with vaccines. If you only look at one side of an issue, you are not looking at it objectively.
You have to be careful about who is funding the study. Is there a special interest? It's not all just one way. There are studies that show vaccines are unsafe. You can't deny that.
"Shaw and Seneff also recently published a paper in the Journal Immunome Research outlining a lot of evidence pointing to the dangers regarding aluminum in vaccines." http://people.csail.mit.edu/seneff/Shaw_et_al_Immunome_Res_2013.pdf
This is a theoretical piece that presents no actual data. As such, the authors did not consider the largest source of aluminum is through daily diet.
"A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition determined that an increased vulnerability to oxidative stress and decreased capacity for methylation may contribute to the development and clinical manifestation of autism. It's well known that viral infections cause increased oxidative stress. (12) Research suggests that metals, including those found in many vaccines are directly involved in increasing oxidative stress.""Oxidative stress, brain inflammation and microgliosis have been heavily documented in association with toxic exposures including various heavy metals. (14)"
The first citation is actually a scientific study, albeit a small one (20 children), but is has nothing to do with vaccines. The second citation also has nothing to do with vaccines, nor does the third.
The blogger in this case is trying to extrapolate those studies to the aluminum contained in vaccines but there is no evidence for that. Additionally, you can see in the text you quoted the most important part, that infections themselves cause oxidative stress. Not vaccinating places individuals at a much higher risk of this.
There is a ton more references to data in that article. All you have to do is click on the footnotes and links and it takes you directly to the information.
Have you read any of these studies yourself, rather than just "clicking on the footnotes"?
The second reason is scientific fraud.
Scientific fraud is the reason there was ever a debate about autism. This was admitted by the author who lost his medical license and had his paper retracted. Subsequently, editorials discussing that paper, for instance in Rolling Stone, were also pulled.
http://briandeer.com/solved/gmc-charge-sheet.pdf
In summary, he was found guilty of 36 charges including four counts of dishonesty and 12 counts of abusing developmentally challenged children.
I would have pulled my editorial too. Let alone he had a plan to sell sham testing to profit off the fraudulent study.
